Tumbler, MySpace ) that were popular in the early 2000's-2014's ( in fact once could argue her look was pretty obviously copied and heavily influenced by them to market to a specific audience; however, at least earlier Grimes appeared more creative and somewhat more authentic to herself) Now, Grimes's super expensive, futuristic/Elven, cool-girl Aesthetic, just seems like over polished cosplay for the rich with the benefit of free PR merch, designer clothes and professional stylists . It would be practically impossible for her to not look great, due to the amount of money spent and people involved but it seems to lack Grimes's previous slightly more authentic spark (Wearing a $5, 000 sci- fi unitard while deliberately being photographed reading " The Communist Manifesto" just screams celebrity excess and how out of touch she is with regular peoples lives in the current economic crisis. Grimes has always seemed to try very hard to contrive a quirky, edgy, artistic, "cool girl" persona and image but again, it is a put on and based what she thinks people will consider "cool". I fear that she has fallen into the cycle of always trying to push and one up that image, which can only ultimately result in continuing to the extreme until it ultimately collapses and fails as she gets further and further from who she really is which comes off as disingenuous, somewhat manipulative ( and try hard) and could alienate her audience due to them sensing her being inauthentic. We would all look Great if we had the same amount of money to frivolously spend, access to the best designer clothes , an actual artistic team behind her to work and consult for her and a professional team of makeup and stylists ( which is fine, as long as we are no longer told to believe the narrative that Grimes is still entirely self made, authentic and independent any more).
