I love the band, but ima need Fred to understand that the roots of the music came from contemporary R&B. Their entire sound is a sample of ours. If you think some Scots brought that sound to the US, I’m glad you didn’t get that teaching certificate. You would’ve been teaching our kids that nonsense. That’s our sound...you’re welcome!

AWB has always been a band that has made a living on the inspiration of black music. Don't you hear Marvin Gaye ? Don't forget the pioneers and the originators of the AWB sound; google them.

The part from 1:39:49 to 1:33:03 is insanely groovy and funky, and for some reason it wears off into something totally completely different. Is that part a separate song?! If yes I would love to know what it is!

Well I'm white and 58 and a drummer and the sounds of AWB,The Ohio Players, George Clinton, Earth, Wind & Fire, Wild Cherry & Tower of Power was my favorite genre of music !! I loved the larger funk bands with horns or at least a sax in them plus the drummer was kept busy playing it. I agree with another commenter that said "music knows no color" because that's a damn fact !! I've seen AWB twice and if they come within a reasonable drive again I'll make it 3 for sure !! I hope Allen & Onnie can keep the sound alive a few more years

Music knows no color lines and transcends cultural differences. I am 63, white and a music lover. Among my favorites are TOP, EWF, and all the Motown greats. My dad who lived to 94 loved all of the jazz greats, almost all of which were black. Many times we enjoyed together the EWF - Chicago concert, one of his favorite musical moments. Go figure, eh? I think that the funk era of the 70's and the Motown sound was among Americas greatest musical accomplishments.

To: Backbeat master I heard this drummer many times live. Berkley School of Music. He grew up on digital music (perfect timing). Diamond, Steve F, Gerome B, John B were masters of the funky foot. That human feel like during a old R&B dance called the penguin if you watched the drummers in the 70"s. Check out Dennis Chambers and the drummer for a R&B group called New Birth on a cut called Got to get a Knuff. It's about the foot especially the Triplett configuration.

  • Kate Usher & The Sturdy Souls

Hands up for this video!! It was a fun watch. If you are interested, check out my videos of an outstanding female vocalist. Guaranteed to soothe your ears, and your eyes =). Enjoy your day!

I don't know, but when I look at this line up it does not look like the awb I am used to, even the performance lacks some feel and energy, not the same as the original from the 70s,, the new guy singing has exactly the same tone in his voice as the one that is missing, but still something is missing, the excitement is gone, a bit flat!!!

I was at the same concert, I went to see Billy Cobham. It was recorded and released as an album called 'Shabazz'. The AWB were really good, loved Robbie's drumming, always have since I first saw him with Brian Auger around 1969/70. You're right though, most of the people were there to see Cobham...fusion freaks like me.

    • Mike Newland
Mike Newland 3 years ago +2

The original drummer Robbie McIntosh was just perfect but he died suddenly. I saw them at The Rainbow in London circa 1973 playing the white album material when it was issued. They were just so tight and original. Best band I've ever seen. Little interest though since they were supporting Billy Cobham.

Baddest whether black or white but that's a hard one being the baddest white group. Doobies, Steely Dan, Tower of Power got a say so in this.
