As a fan of Black Mirror and CYOA games I was really looking forward for something like this for ages!
The plotline was promising but sadly, after 30 mins it got boring. The choices were too few, too basic and mostly useless to the plot.
It seemed some options were just there for the sake of shocking the viewer. That left me wondering if the people behind this were real fans of these kind of games and storytelling. Now after watching this BTS I realize they had no experience at all with it! Netflix next time make sure to hire people from the game industry to help your people with your "interactive" storytelling.

"Leave a comment" - "Do something productive with your live". Ok, here we go... It needed more scenes to expand some paths where it was obviously necessary. Also the programming needs to acknowledge when the user is not making any choices and avoid paths where there is someone saying that "someone is making choices"... Finally, I would like the secret content to lead to a secret ending. These changes will give you more views, Netflix, and will get more people hooked, but of course no one cares about my comments and I just wasted my time. Wrong choice.

I think Netflix is the perfect platform for interactive movie content like this and works a lot better then bringing interactive movies to a game platform like Steam. I remember Wales interactive doing this a couple of years ago with a similar user experience, but just didn't have anywhere else to go but Steam. Wales Interactive should re release their movie on Netflix and let everyone in the living room enjoy it.

I watched and interacted with the film today on Netflix and I must say that it was a wonderful experience. I do like the idea of choosing your own decision which impacts the story. It allows the audience (us) to immerse ourselves in the movie and feel like we are actually there with Stefan making decisions. This is a brilliant idea from Netflix and I hope they make more interactive movies. Lovely work!

The way bandersnatch went for me just gave me so much anxiety. It took me on an emotional rollercoaster, and I felt so connected to Stefan in the end when he died.
That really made me feel so emotional, because it felt like you were a key part of him, and it shows you what he went through just because of a video game.
It's just heartbreaking for me and confusing. It gives you a taste of what it would be like to go insane in such a realistic way if you choose the right paths.
Because of this, it built up so much anxiety and stress inside me that I still can't get rid of.
Still, a great creation, but frightening all at the same time.

You know what's really the mainstream pioneer in interactive movie, The X Files!!
They should get the whole franchise from Disney and Fox merger (bc I'm pretty sure they're not gonna touch it anymore), continue and pick up the TV show for last for real Season 12, and remake the UI and remaster the videos of the The X Files Game (Interactive Game, I think it's 1998) and release it on Netflix as another interactive movie. Cannonically and fans consider it as a lost episode of The X Files.
And also Netflix should release more and more interactive TV shows or movies every year, start slow and make it many each other year

  • Gastón Sepúlveda
    Gastón Sepúlveda 2 months ago

I "love" how the production team behind Bandersnatch thinks this is "madness" or "Revolutionary", when we've had interactive storytelling for years (Telltale being the biggest example)...and quite better than this may I say.
I think Bandersnatch sucks. It has an interesting premise, but as the story progresses, things become more and more frustrating...and boring to be honest.
The choices we're given are idiotic and in no way reflect what the characters feel at the moment. Like when Stefan is given the choice to kill his father. It makes no fucking sense, it's just there to "shock" the viewer, but to me, it gave me frustration at what decisions were made in the storyline.
Then there is the central idea behind Bandersnatch. The notion that maybe, no of us is in control and that our actions are just part of a simulation. It's just so forced and convoluted, and it's been done so many times now, that I think even The Sims have done it better than this.
IMO, I think the team behind this became so obsessed with trying to "innovate" that they forgot that interactive entertainment has grown way past than what Bandersnatch can offer, and the story (that had potential) just becomes a laughable mess of ilogical bullshit, all in the "service" to try to make their "interactive" adventure revolutionary and shocking...what a waste of time.

The idea of multi-path viewing is great. But how it was implemented in Bandersnatch I found very underwhelming. I found the script very weak: it felt like a story written purely to show off the technology, but otherwise with no actual story substance. So many of the choices were meaningless: do you want the main character to get angry in method A or method B. Er, he's still getting angry either way. So you felt your choice was really meaningless, since they were variations on really just one choice. Hopefully, future works will make better use of what should be a great storytelling device.

might it be because you focused on the choices and outcomes? i saw the whitebear symbol all throughout and i thought, well, im one of those people who visits whitebear now. i thoroughly enjoyed how stefan was thoroughly controlled/manipulated and tortured mentally and emotionally. i was entertained by his misery over and over again.
we, the viewers, were not really in control. we were given the illusion of control but the outcomes were already mapped out for us. no matter what we chose, it doesnt end well for the protagonist.

tbh i like the concept but after a playing with the movie (i know even me i cant believe what i just said) it is really fun but the problem with black mirror each episode of the series is fun for some and other episode are fun for others. this story/game was kinda boring tbh and felt really weird toward the end when i wanted to come back because i took an answer i didnt want and never could come back. like the telephone number scene where i type one number wrong and i cant come back at all to that scene. the story and the gameplay felt rush and couldnt really like it. i will say that this is a perfect new concept that work and will work if others are made but this story of black mirror didnt felt as work on as other black mirror story. weird to say that when there was a bunch of more people working on it but it felt verrrryyyy rush. i would not recommand due to the story but i would support the concept alot. hope they can make another black mirror with multiple choice!

I love the hard work and innovation that went into Black Mirror: Bandersnatch! Played it multiple times, however, I did find it a rather boring storyline...not engaging enough for me personally! I love Black Mirror and I love a good choose your own adventure game, so I assumed I’d love this as well! However, I think the next big interactive film should be more focused on horror / survival! My sister threw out comment saying that this would’ve been dope if it was Saw! Where you got to choose how people died, lol. Kinda sicko, but engaging! Or even an apocalypse like Telltales A Walking Dead game! It’s cool that we get to pick cereal and music and such, but there needed to be more crazy choices like “Kill dad!l or “Take the drug!” or “Chop or Bury the body!” Those were the coolest moments! The rest was very, eh. He could’ve made those by himself. It’s a GREAT start! Love it! Hoping to see something even bigger and that would have me on the edge of my seat crying because I made the wrong choices! Bravo Netflix!
