"Holding Back the Years" is the 7th track on Simply Red's debut studio album Picture Book. The song was a huge success for the group and quickly rose to the top of charts across the world. The single is one of two Simply Red songs (the other being their cover of "If You Don't Know Me by Now") to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100, for the week ending July 12, 1986. It also reached #2 in the UK and was a worldwide hit. It had initially been released in the UK the year before, but only reached #51.

It just seems to flow along, this video and song, doesn't it? It flows almost lazily along, as if floating on a gentle English river's current. It therefore gives itself ... a chance to be good. And gives us, the viewers (and listeners) a chance to simply enjoy it.
In terms of artistic expression, there is nothing demeaning for a man here; there is no loss of cool, if you like. The video's appeal overall is that it's strong and sensitive at once. Not that easy to do in the macho world of pop and rock. And today the female pop stars must be presented as manly as the males: had the places in this Simply Red video been used for a pop video today, teetering in the modern lady pop singer's wake, those gravestones we see here would topple over with a thud. Nothing's ever the same. Nothing ever is given the chance to be good. Everything is a flickering mess today in popular culture. (Plus ça change, plus ça la même chose). The pop video of today is, from what I perceive, the same as being back in the silent era when there were "the flicks", with people running around, gesticulating wildly, dramatising excessively their pain, their anger. A modern pop video is just like a Charlie Chaplin short in many ways, you may imagine. It's a false, hysterical world now. Where am I going? I think you know a good song when you can sense easily that there is a real appreciation in the song for making music. And Holding Back The Years is just such a song.
