I'm a professional archivist and historian, originally specialized in the Ancient Near East. You managed to tell the story using solid, established scholarship while also bringing in some of the newer stuff as well without falling off the horse on either side. That is very difficult indeed and it is quite an achievement. This would get the highest marks in any MA program in the US. Very well done.

Imagine growing up hearing about the sea people your whole life, keeping lookout, and coming up with plans for when they showed up. Then one day, years later, you see them. Black sails on the horizon. That must've been terrifying. It's like a real life horror movie.

I won't lie, when I clicked on this while baked as fuck I was expecting it to be some Ancient Aliens-style pseudohistory based on the title, but here I am coming back to this video every few weeks. I genuinely think this video is an achievement, especially in the absence of any decent free historical programming and doubly impressive for a one man project, it's reignited my childhood love for ancient history. thanks, man

I really love History Time, and this one, along with the Doggerland one are my favorites. The video is really well made, and if you a follower of current events, is is very easy to see parallels between the Bronze Age and today. It is an oversimplification, but one take away from this documentary for me was how disrupting trading networks for a sustained period can lead to a domino-like collapse of civilization. I believe you referred to this as “system collapse” in your video. I am hopeful that something like this couldn’t happen to us today, but this documentary along with the recent supply chain problems, really make me think about how easy it could be to have our own “cyber-age collapse”. Thanks for taking the time to do such a great job, and helping me to think!

@Kimberly Stanley Two points: The folks who blockaded crossings weren't the Freedom Convoy, albeit they _are_ groups inspired by and hold similar aims. Same movement, different organizations.
Second: It's not that they don't trust science; they don't trust _scientists._ Who are people with many and varied motivations; some of those motivations may conflict with disseminating the unvarnished truth.
And the idea that anyone should trust their government... well, I guess it's a good thing you're watching a history channel.

    • Kimberly Stanley
Kimberly Stanley 3 months ago +2

@McPsychen Dork well, in general I support people demonstrating and holding governments and corporations accountable. I tend to take a John Stuart Mill view toward people/groups I disagree with. Meaning that I believe people need the freedom to express alternative opinions. Naturally, when people demonstrate (or on this case blockade an international border) they have to be prepared for the consequences. Some have been arrested and fined and that seems appropriate, since they broke the law. But, I don’t think punishing these people will address the underlying issue, which is that a significant group of people do not trust their governments or science.

Great episode. Thank you for all your work. As a very amateur history buff, I find this period and prior fascinating, like it's a fantasy world as school history starts at and only at Greece, then Rome, then bam Renaissance. But, the sea peoples are a prime example of what happens when a "culture" has little interest in settlements and record keeping. Why are there so many programs and studies covering Rome, Egypt, and China, for example, as opposed to BC era Russian Steppes, because they made it easy.... they were all prolific builders, record keepers, and hype men for their better way of lives.

Yes, nice work. Sadly, all the answers are in the Holy Bible, but nobody is following directions and clues as written in Hebrew. Pertinent details are lost in translations and when dualities are ignored. If the Bible says islandS (plural) look for islands. If the direction says Far Far East, don't point at the Middle East. The Bible also mentioned that Eden and the Garden are 2 separate lands, they are not together in the same site. If only biblical scholars follow the Bible instead if their assumptions, they'd find out that the ancient river bed starts from the North Pole, southward between Europe and the Americas, westward all the way to the far far East till it reaches the Marianas and dividing in the Philippines. NASA found the continuous ancient river trenches under the oceans, complete with the fountains of the great deeps (also called active hydrothermal vents), as described in the Bible. Also water flows downward, so the rivers from Eden are shallower in the mid-continental waters and deepest in the Marianas regions where it waters the Garden in the areas close to the "IslandS" of the Philippines.

Wow, that was so very informative. Finally, some insight into the sea people and the mentioned links with Cyprus was of great interest specifically to me as it is where I live and my country of origin. Also when you look at our DNA it is a mix of so many places of origin, the Levant, Near Middle East, Asia Minor, Southern Italy, and Greek (Achaeans), basically most of the areas that you spoke of.All makes sense

Helen, you are Greek, Cypriot-Greek, and yes all those peoples came through Cyprus. The sea peoples seem more like vagabonds forming after a great destruction and nowhere to go. They also went to Crete and destroyed the people there -- except for those that went into the mountains and survived.

@Blair Colquhoun I don't have to prove anything to some TheXvid Yahoo, I just added my opinion like everyone else. There's Egyptian oral stories and painted ones the Temple plaza wall that match Plato's of sea people from ATLANTIS with vast navies invading Egypt and taking Egyptians captive. That's enough for me.

@Randomly swatching We are talking about an historical person here. Now if someone where to set up one of his plays in Africa with an all black cast then that is another thing but William Shakespeare himself wasn't black. An alternative is to adapt his plays and you may end up like with Akira Kurosawa's movie Ran that is based on Shakespeare's play King Lear.

There’s quite a lot of inaccuracies in this video (partner is a classicist specialising in Bronze Age Egypt and Crete, claims like the Sea Peoples caused the downfall of the Egyptian empire or that there were no cities in the eastern Med for 100 years after 1200BCE are just absolutely ridiculous and ahistoric), probably as a result of the pace he’s churning these videos out at on disparate topics not allowing for enough research time.

What a fantastic video! I remember reading a book about ancient Egypt years ago. They commented on the Sea Peoples, but the research at that point had no idea who they were. The "Sea Peoples" were left dangling out there as this force that destroyed one of the greatest empires in history with no further comment. This research in this vid is top notch. The editing, which kept important names and pictures on-screen when I needed them, put it over the top. It really helped me stay on track with the impeccable presentation. Thank you!

Thank You for this overwhelming review of the sea peoples, full with new revealing insides.
Concerning the distribution of the Urnfield culture I was surprised that this horizont could correspond to the LIGURIAN culture. The Ligurians (Greek Ligues) were a group of preindoeuropean ethnies that colonised northern Europa beggining with the end of the last wurmian glaciation 15.000 years ago and extending as numerous oro- hydro- and toponyms indicate from Scottland (kingdom of ALBA on ALBION) to Sicily and from the hercynian forest to the coasts of Iberia. The Ligurians founded Alba Longa, the aristocratic rival of the new plebeic city of Rome, but were chased later to Sicily by the Etruscan, were they founded a new Ligurian kingdom. The Ligurians left numerous inscriptions in their preindoeuropean language around the lakes of northern Italy ( the so-called Lepontic inscriptions, collected by Warmought' s pre italic dialects.)
Ufortunately the " Celtic" wave tried to cancel the existence of these Ligurian inscriptions on stone, arms, potery, by falsely declaring them "Celtic".These Lepontic inscriptions are older than the first latin inscriptions and almost contemporary with Mycenian linear B. and their language is clearly PREindoeuropean.
The Ligurians were the dominant ethnic populations that ruled western Europa from say 12000 AD down to the present Era.

The professor spent about two minutes on the Sea Peoples and even in my ignorance, I knew there had to be more! This is one of those mysteries that traverses time and is inescapably fascinating. I enjoyed this opus of yours immensely and will be re-watching several times. This is the absolute best piece of research on this subject I have ever come across. And, the music is perfect.

Really impressive that I've watched almost all of it and I never noticed you misspeaking the date compared to how it shows on screen. Its extremely difficult to talk at length about history without accidentally saying the wrong century or reversing/transposing numbers.
You can see this happen in many history TheXvid channels with much shorter videos.
They have the date clearly marked on screen so no one is misled, but after more than an hour I never saw you having to correct the narration with a text display.

Very well done. Your dedication and knowing of the subject is remarkable. Excellent documentary. It is always more than interesting to bear in mind, listening to the names of all of those different peoples, that one did not fell from a tree on Earth some years ago. One comes, or is related, to some or more than one of those several groups of people you mention. We are another link in a queue of members, a line of people that goes that far back in time and beyond.

@Sailrjup12nh “Phoenicians” (Φοινικες) is an Ancient Greek designation for the Canaanites that enters into the archaeological record immediately after the Bronze Age collapse. How the “sea peoples” may have assimilated into the region historically termed “Canaan” by the neighboring ancient Egyptians and Hurrians is a matter of debate among modern historians.

My 14th time watching. I love this. You did an AMAZING JOB, Kudos. I would look up Dr. Fairchild in Turkey. He has pictures of so many ancient ruins that have NOT EVER been seen by archaeologist, nor excavated. He's written tons of articles and books. He gives lectures about the Biblical History and just the history in general of that area. He said that the Turkish people themselves had no idea how big of a part of History that area played, nor did they know all the ruins existed. Turkey just doesn't have the money for excavations or preservation. HE POSSIBLY has information that could help you. Then you could add an update to this vid or any number of others. Dr. Eric Klein's lecture on the Sea Peoples was lacking. Yours in AWESOME and more detailed than his IMO. THANK YOU again for all the hard work.
He said that many of the Pirates, settled in Rough Galicia. He prob has archaeological evidence. He has tons, spanning all ages. He is an OLD Testament Scholar and a Historian. Seriously I think he has info. NONE of the stuff he's found is in print, or written about. He is the only person in the WORLD, LITERALLY who has and still does, walk Turkey. He goes where others won't or haven't. His photos are the ONLY ones in existence of most of the ancient ruins and inscriptions. He's found many temples with Menorahs on them. The bull symbol, and he even found an intact Roman Road that was merely overgrown. The very one Paul of the Bible walked. Everyone was illiterate in those times. It was the priests who went around and told the about the Bible. I'M NOT pushing BIble History, but as you say....there is a link. I think the Professor has it. He named many of the invaders.

@Baby Boo p.s. I forgot to mention that YES I AGREE WITH YOU about the Bible and having to Study it, AND in the language it was originally written in. That's why Bible study is so important. You can and will never know it all, and takes a lifetime of study to really understand the Bible. I think if it were taught correctly, more ppl would be interested and not declare it some "fairy tale" OH that irks me. lol. Anywho, This guy here, is VERY Thorough. I have never been so interested in history as since finding HT (and now some channels you recommend too). It was great, I didn't expect that, congratulations! Now, since you asked, I really am interested in Dacians (greek Δάκοι “Dakoi” or Daos, “Daoi”), in Thraco-Getae context. In present-day Romania, there is well-known the Draco, a standard flown by the Dacians, featuring a wolf head. Ancient cultures artefacts show indigenous people here from stone ages, later influenced by indo-europeans invasions and many others in following centuries. Some of these cultures are: Petresti, Vadastra, Cucuteni-Tripolie, Gura Baciului, Vinca, Boian, Cernavoda, Gumelnita, Hamangia. There's so much and so old history here and we still know so little about it, due to lack of written information like other forgotten civilisations and poor archeological study.

The battle depicted at Medinet Habu was the Battle of the Delta. It was the final victory against the Sea Peoples, but I think the Battle of Djahy earlier that same year would likely have been several times larger in scale. In spite of them probably having the largest navy ever seen in the Mediterranean up to that time, most people joining their forces from the fallen powers of the world would have been gradually gathering into a larger and larger migrating land force.
Their navy was probably exclusively manned by warriors, with their families living near ports they controlled or traveling with the land force. It would be too expensive to build ships for all of them, and would take too long to teach everyone how to sail. Just try to picture how possible it would be for the Persian army that invaded Greece to have traveled strictly as a navy. It wouldn't work. Most have to travel along the coastline being resupplied by the navy. That's the Sea Peoples as well.

During an episode of the popular British series "Time Team", it was stated that around 1200-1180 BC the counties of Devon and Cornwall, were subjected to immense downpours of rain for 20 years. Perhaps this western climate change foreshadowed the climate change farther east that caused Black Sea peoples to come into the Med. and start plundering.

Interesting vid...I noticed a long time ago archaeologists are keen to record and note great battles but tend to ignore squatting and migration. I believe all these famous civilizations were as much -if not more-influenced by migrations of squatters as by war and conquest. They were probably a hodge podge of people who eventually liked to raise a flag of unity and identity..Egyptians Greeks Assyrians sumerians akkadians..etc..Europeans.. .Americans...etc..etc..etc..all a circumstantial mix of multiple streams colliding over millenia eventually forming an identity...
