The funniest thing about this is that I picked up a Hitchhiker in a drive thru one night, for the exact reason...

I actually walked a drive-thru back in the 70s and didn’t have any trouble.
Backed thru one once too because my roommate was hungry and I wasn’t.
    Those were the days.

In high school, I went to a nearby BK with some friends after school. No walk-thru? No problem. We had wheels!

A shopping cart. They gave us our order anyway. 😜👍

In the early 80s, 4 of us Sailors were returning from liberty and we pretended to be riding in a car. When the lady in the window said she can't serve us because we weren't in a car, we told her it was Wonder Woman's car. She said it's her plane that's invisible, we said that's the plane is only a two seater. We got our order, plus one extra order for Wonder Woman.

Addendum: the tv show Eureka S2 EP9 (sight unseen) ~21Min mark proves invisible cars are possible LOL, for drive thru use.

nah, that don't work too well either. I got run off from a fast-food establishment when I rode my bicycle through the drive-thru to get an application for a job.

Had that exact same experience with McDonald's. Tho was lucky enough to have a guy pull up and tell us to get in. So he drove us through the drive through and let us out at the exit of the drive through. Nice guy 10/10

Haha! I work at Taco Bell, in the drive thru. I wanted to help these people so bad. They were on foot because there's no way their truck and trailer were going to squeeze through our tiny lane with a sharp turn. I told my boss that these were not just random homeless people or any crazy things. These were legitimate paying customers that could not get their vehicle through our drive-thru and our lobby was closed so they had no choice but to use the drive-thru. Unfortunately, he refused to allow me to do this. So I could hear them through the menu talking to people in cars. They ended up paying for someone's meal in return for them buying all of them meals. They never had to set foot in the car. They simply had the driver order their food and the drivers food and the pedestrians paid for all of it for the favor. I was so touched I provided a very steep discount to them/her for doing that for them. Hehehe... :-) Also threw in a few free items.

Henry Chandler yeah, I've been in the same situation. It's smart to carry a box of snack crackers and cookies if you ever find yourself in this situation again.

Your boss didn't listen to the employee whose boots were on the ground expertly doing the job he pays him to do, in this case, discerning between a paying customer and a nuisance. Your boss turned down the opportunity to delight customers and make more money. Your boss isn't particularly bright.

@Henry Chandler People like you are the reason I break rules sometimes. I'm sorry that happened to you. It's unfortunate. They tell us it's a safety issue. I don't see how it's any safer serving someone in a car than someone on foot, except the person on foot can more easily grab the cash. But if someone in a car tries robbing us, we're supposed to hand over the cash. Seriously? I don't care what they say, I don't think it's any more dangerous serving a pedestrian. They may be in more danger of being hit by a car, but that's a risk they knowingly and willingly take. I think we should be allowed to post signs relieving us of responsibility if someone is injured or killed and allow them to take the risk if they choose. Every time we turn away a customer, we lose money and potentially a repeat customer....

Funny you brought up Taco Bell. I was going to tell my story about having to walk through the drive thru and they wouldn't wait on me at Taco Bell in Tracy, CA. I drive a semi truck with a trailer and sometimes don't have a choice as to when I can get something to eat. Some times it's in the middle of the night and the restaurant lobby is closed and I haven't had anything to eat all day due to working hard to make delivery on time.

@Red T Thank you... Many people have helped me along the path of my life, it's only right to spread the kindness. One thing my mom taught me that I'll never let go: do unto others as you'd have them do unto you, "The Golden Rule". Only when I became an adult did I learn this is actually straight from the Bible (Matthew 7:12). But whether you believe in the Bible or not, it's an excellent rule to live by! 🤗🤗🤗

Pedestrian and bicyclist discrimination must stop. It's no secret. Fast food prioritizes the drive through lane above walk-in customers. This promotes global warming. Drive through is no longer a good idea. I vote we make it pedestrians bicyclists get priority service and cagers eat last.

    • Aaron Lingenfelter
      Aaron Lingenfelter 3 months ago

Thomas Hughes good point. In fairness, it may be related to my location and the fact that most of the bicyclists seem to be more health conscious...or maybe it’s health pompous. I too have ignored the ATM restriction and won’t patronize stores that insist I leave my backpack outside with my bike...plenty other options other than online, and I don’t mind not giving them business and have told them so.

    • Thomas Hughes
Thomas Hughes 3 months ago +1

@Aaron Lingenfelter I sometimes want to use the drive through on a bike because it's a hassle to lock and secure cargo I have along. On tour I Did use drive through lanes on the bicycle and did get served. I also got told not to order from a bicycle again about half the time. It was easy to agree because I was nomadic.
Banks also discriminate. There is a sign at the drive up ATM on my home branch stating the ATM is for motorists only. That info is not included on the location map or branch website. I've ignored it.

    • Aaron Lingenfelter
Aaron Lingenfelter 3 months ago +1

But in all fairness, I don't know of too many bicyclists who'd be going to the majority of places that have drive throughs...with coffee places being a possible exception.
