Secrets Of The Glasgow Subway

  • Published on Sep 3, 2018
  • Another episode of 'Secrets...' this time, we went up to Scotland, to ride on the brilliant Glasgow Subway system with its fifteen stops to see what things we could spot that you might not have known about or missed.
And having done all this, it should all change in the next couple of years in 2020, when brand new driverless trains come onto the system, and the whole subway is upgraded again! Read about that here:
Note: This video not paid for or sponsored by SPT, but they did kindly give me filming permission - many thanks!
Thanks also to Kirsty, for her excellent local local knowledge without which it wouldn't have been possible.

No way!! YT just random recommended this to me.
During the modernisation I, my brother and a friend were rescued from a huge concrete pit they had dug at Broomloan road near Govan not long after it closed, 1977. My profile pic, altered, is from the newspaper item about it. What are the chances of that?

I had no idea Glasgow even had an underground until I saw the 1977 documentary - it's heartbreaking to see that all the beauty of the Victorian line seems to be completely destroyed in the name of progress. I wish I could take a trip on those older trains!

During the 1930’s, Bing Crosby arrived in Glasgow at St Enoch’s station. He gave an impromptu performance for his fans waiting to catch a glimpse of him.
In July 1990, Frank Sinatra gave a concert at Ibrox Park as part of the Glasgow’s City of Culture celebrations. Many people did not get in to see him, however, because the seating arrangements were changed at the last minute due to lack of ticket sales.

If it's only island platforms, why the f is there doors on both sides?

    • Gary Rea
      Gary Rea 13 days ago

The island platforms were replaced on some platforms during refurbishment years back, hence doors on both sides.

Why doesn't England have any underground system outside of London?

    • gwishart
      gwishart 15 days ago

Because London is incredibly densely populated with ridiculously expensive land. Other English cities have the space for light-rail and/or trams.

The noise from those seagulls at the end is terrible. Embarrassing. Why don't Glasgow City Council start culling them?

  • Леонид Никитин

I wonder why those "island platforms" are this narrow, doesn't seem quite safe to me. That widest platform on Kelvinbridge is like 3/5 of a usual platform here, in Russia. Ah and yes, we typically have island platforms all over the place, with some pretty rare exceptions (which I think is the most adequate way to construct a station, it's quite stupid to have to use stairs to get to the other side: what if you chose the wrong one, but your train arrives and leaves instantly afterwards?).
But still, at least in some cities such as Glasgow actually clever people were in charge of underground construction, and that's a pleasing fact.
