I'm a 53 year old former Division I and international player of 7 seasons of the mid 80's and early 90's. I surely remember this incident, but have forgotten some of the particulars around what was "supposed" to have had happen between Kareem and Benson leading up to the elbow and the punch altercation. I will emphatically state that any athlete that respects himself and his craft is not going to let some rookie at that throw a cheap shot elbow like this to the stomach without serious retaliation. I would have done equal as Kareem to establish serious boundaries. It's clear this was a premeditated elbow, it wasn't even in the heat of battle for down low positioning. If he had any basketball street knowledge he would have known you don't cheap shot someone this bad and turn your head from the play. He was a total fool and got what was coming.

Interesting how this still creates controversy years later. As a Kareem fan, a Laker fan and a UCLA fan, I still feel Kareem should never have sucker punched Benson. Benson was a great college center, but did not have the size to dominate the NBA, but his career was altered from that moment on. He did what hundreds of players have done, elbowed the opposing player when the refs were not watching. Benson was wrong, but that does not warrant a sucker punch. Kareem cost his team dearly by punching Benson, and the Bucks. Both were wrong but Kareem as a veteran could have schooled Benson in the game and that alone would have been payback. He did the same thing against Tommy Burleson, who unlike Benson, was playing exceptionally well at the time of their altercation-and at 7-4, dropped 35 on Kareem. Objectively speaking, Kareem in the mid-70's was quite militant, unlike the thoughtful Kareem of today, He will always be one of my favorite Bruins and one of the most thoughtful and intelligent players ever to compete in the NBA, but in the Benson case, he made a costly mistake.

It took like 15 seconds for jabbar to get his wind back, big deal. They had both been banging each other. Jabbar threw a blind side punch that could have caused permanent damage. The act showed a Felon-like mentality from a spoiled multi millionaire used to getting a free wealthy man's pass. There's a guy on you tube who got a life sentence for blind siding a guy in a fast food restaraunt. The very least he could have done was to square off with him before throwing a punch. He wouldn't have looked so poosy that way.Of course Benson was watching Kabong out of the corner of his eye,Gangsta Talk,he was defending the basket and trying to watch out for the noted hit and run boy at the same time.

I hate sucker punches, but that was not a sucker punch. When you look around, make sure nobody is looking, then load up with a vicious elbow to the gut, you just started a fight. If you are cowardly or dumb enough to turn your back after doing that, it's your fault you didn't see the punch coming. Definitely not a sucker punch when the guy getting punched is the one who started the fight.

    • 200mphz06
      200mphz06 2 years ago +1

+Johnny 34 Elbows happen often in basketball. Kareem started the elbowing in this game elbowing Benson prior to this.
If you think en elbow to the gut is equivalent to a sucker punch to the face breaking facial bones and his own hand, allow me to take an elbow to the gut after which I punch you in the face and see if that's fair.
If Kareem would have walked up to Benson afterwards and challenged him to a fight, that would have been fair, or if he would have elbowed Benson back to the gut. Obviously elbows had been traded and Benson didn't expect it to escalate to a cheap shot to the face.
But then kareem was known for being a sucker punching coward. Perhaps Benson wasn't informed.

    • Johnny 34
      Johnny 34 2 years ago

Okay, so if you punched somebody in the stomach, knocking the wind out of them, and then turned your back, you think that means you aren't in a fight? You have a punch coming and you know you have a punch coming. It was cowardly for the guy to hit and then turn away.

    • 200mphz06
      200mphz06 2 years ago +1

+Johnny 34 That was an unannounced sucker punch. They were trading elbows prior to this. If you think an elbow to the gut is equivalent to a sucker punch to the face, you're crazy. The coward did the same to Burleson. I watched that game. Nagy watched this game. Kareem later in an interview said, " I shouldn't have done it. I could have killed him". Do you not agree with him?

    • Peter Nagy
Peter Nagy 3 years ago +1

+Johnny 34 Yes, if that is what had happened, Benson would have been totally wrong. However, that is not what happened. The two were going at it from the beginning of the game, and it was Jabbar who started it. Even if it had not been, walking up and punching someone who had merely thrown an elbow is indeed a sucker punch.

"I decked Kent Benson because I wasn't going to be abused. Benson was another white hope fresh out of college and looking to make a name for himself. The Lakers were playing in Milwaukee. It was 2 minutes into the 1st game of the season; Milwaukee had scored, and I was jogging downcourt about to establish position to the left of the lane. There is a standardized amount of jockeying that goes on as the offensive player tries to claim and hold a space on the floor that he can use to his best advantage and the defensive man, using whatever means he can, attempts to deny him that privilege. Benson had no experience in the professional world, did not know the parameters, all he knew was that the book on me was, you muscle Kareem. He was going to show me that he didn't back down a step, that he was a man. I had gotten behind him and was ready for the ball when he glanced around, saw no one was looking, and threw a vicious elbow that caught me flesh in the solar plexus. He knocked the wind right out of me. Immediately, I was back in the streets: With no breath I expected him to keep attacking me, because in New York that's exactly what would have happened. I was doubled over, on the playground, dealing with another beating. I hated it; I hated him. I kept saying to myself, If I can just get my breath back we will have a final confrontation.
I started to breath again, in gasps like I was crying, and as soon as I could finally move, I ran out there and fired on him. I wanted to kill him. If I'd hit him a good shot in the temple, I believe I would've killed him. Fortunately, for all my training in the martial arts when it came down to delivering a blow in anger I went with the roundhouse right and hit him in the orbit of the eye. His skull absorbed some of the impact. He went down as if he'd been shot, but I was yelling at him, wanted some more. This was life and death for me, and I was fully prepared to carry it out to it's conclusion. Benson was a big man, six eleven, two hundred forty five pounds; he could have damaged me. I had organs inside that didn't need to be getting hit by him. It was early in the season, and I wasn't going to let this be established as a precedent. I wasn't going to stand for it."

I WATCHED Kareem at UCLA, and his entire NBA career, and saw Benson play in college and the NBA. No question Kareem was much better but he was better than pretty much any center in history. Benson WAS NOT A BUM! He was a journey man-but anyone who plays 10 years in the NBA has talent. His career high in points was 28 and in one game and in rebounds was 22. There are players today who would be considered rebounding machines with 22 in one game. Benson was a great college player who was an average NBA player. That makes him better than 99pct of everyone else. He has a much better career than Richard Washington, who was Marques Johnson's team mate. He also has been very successful post NBA. The punch was-and always will be-a cheap shot. I am a Kareem fan, but facts are facts.

+Marquis De Suave: You are right; Benson was an NBA journeyman. That, however, almost certainly makes him infinitely more successful in his career than you are in yours. This video doesn't show the elbows Kareem gave to Benson. Sucker punching to the face is the act of a coward. Kareem also sucker punched Tom Burleson. "The shot that I took from Kareem, from the blind side, could have ended my career. I could go out and ruin his career. Hit him when he's not looking, but I don't believe in hitting anyone from the blind side or when they're not looking." -- Tom Burleson. I watched the Burleson game as it was televised in LA when the Lakers played the Sonics. It was, just like the Benson game, a cheap shot by Kareem. Burleson dominated him by throwing down 35 against him, and had Burleson not gotten injured, just like Bill Walton, he could have been an NBA all-star for years. The punch Kareem threw was totally unwarranted. The problem Kareem had was back in those days, he was very militant, and he himself has stated his views on race relations, especially then, were extremely militant. That was understandable when you look at his past and see the many injustices he dealt with, but nonetheless the fight against Burleson was not justified.

dictatorofneptune: Your writing is so bad that I am not totally sure what you are trying to say. Nevertheless, you do seem to claim that waiting eleven seconds before retaliating is an immediate reaction, which is nonsense. Moreover, it was actuality Jabbar who started to bully the rookie. He could not take his own medicine, therefore he resorted to a cheap shot; walking up to Benson and blindsiding him with a punch. You have to be either demented or a liar to claim that was justified.

    • Peter Nagy
Peter Nagy 3 years ago +1

+Imad Bayev: This is not about whom I hate. It is about how the event happened. You and other apologists for Jabbar are legally factspeaking over this incident. You are abjectly dishonest in two ways:

      1. insisting that without video, anything any of us says is fiction. At least two other people have testified that they saw this incident on television news the day it happened. It showed a series of aggressive acts started by Jabbar. He tried to bully Benson physically, but was unable to do it. each time Benson proved to be the stronger man. Jabbar escalated each time, and Benson gave it right back. Right where the video takes over, they were running next to each other in transition. Jabbar sent several deliberate jabs to Benson's ribs. Benson returned the favor, except harder. Jabbar was obviously in pain. When they set up at the opposite end Jabbar elbowed Benson harder than ever before. It was clearly an aggressive act that justified self defense, not just another elbow. It was then that Benson doubled Jabbar over. Now that he had lost the face to face confrontation, Jabbar then waited for a chance for a sucker punch.

      2. pretending that you have a case for self defense for Jabbar. You and your friends -I cannot even tell you apart- write taunting swill that has no legal basis. You write what you wish were the case; Jabbar was the victim, and he corrected the wrong in a totally acceptable manner. That is acceptable to you, not to a court of law. Self defense does not occur after one has been hit, waits, is not under attack, and ambushes his victim. That is premeditated assault. If you really do not understand this, you are extremely dim, as your writing style already proves.

Lastly, you bore me with your sophomoric attempts to ascribe negative motives to what I write. I am not a Kent Benson fan. I either hate him, nor adulate him. You also bring out the race card, as idiots of your level always do. What I have said is due purely to the analysis of the event.

If racism were my motive, when a white person did the same thing to a black, my double standard would force me to switch, defending the aggressor. That was not the case when white Marty McSorely ambushed black Donald Bashear. I call that an assault on McSorely. Whatever happened between them before, he was not justified in walking up on Bashear and knocking his lights out. A court of law agreed with me. Reviewing the facts of the Jabbar/Benson case leaves no doubt they would agree on that, too, but that one was not prosecuted. Now just crawl back under your rock, amoeba brain.

  • Peter Nagy
Peter Nagy 3 years ago +10

imadbasayev: You asked how it could have been a cheap shot, if he was elbowed first. Well, first of all, it was Jabbar who started the entire sequence. I saw it on television the day it happened. Secondly, even if he had not, a premeditated attack after the fact is not justified, either morally or legally.
If Jabbar had punched immediately after being elbowed, it might tentatively have qualified as self defense, but by most reasonable judgment it would have been an unjustified overreaction. By waiting till at a later point when Benson was not ready, to punch him, Jabbar committed an outright assault. Marty McSorely was suspended and convicted of assault for a similar event against Donald Brashir.
You are without doubt a Jabbar advocate, therefore I am sure that if the roles had been reversed, you would still take Jabbar's side. That and the above suggests that you your judgment is supported by no principles at all, only your own arbitrary personal preferences.

+200mphz06 It hurt the case to generalize about blacks, just a it does the same when the opposite side makes racist comments. How about just analyzing what is relevant to the Benson-Jabbar incident?

I am married to a black woman, and due to circumstances, most of my friends are black. They do not fit the profile you are ascribing to the entire race.

The differential crime statistics have two causes:

      1. Residual discrimination dooms more blacks than whites to poverty, and poverty breeds crime.

      2. There is incontrovertible evidence that in the criminal justice system blacks are not treated equally. They are arrested at higher rates for similar complaints, charged with more serious offenses, convicted at higher rates, and given stiffer sentences.

+Imad Basayev Abject lie; both were elbowing each other. Even if we abandon the idea of trying to determine who started or escalated it. You are a lair.

    • Peter Nagy
      Peter Nagy 2 years ago

Imad Basayev is a moron who thinks that being KOed is having one's "ass whooped." Further to demonstrate his homo habilis brain, he adds that anyone who does not see it that way is a "cry baby" who should "grow some balls." No, sissy, that is not what it is about.

The general connotation of getting one's ass "whooped" is in a fight. Walking up on a person and blasting him in the face is not a fight; it is an ambush. You are too stupid to understand that. By your abysmal standards, Donald Brashear must have been a cry baby for complaining about what Marty McSorely did to him.

Speaking of Marty McSorely, I note that not one of you peanut brains have responded to my repeatedly mentioning him. It must really bother you that a white hockey player viciously KOed a black one. Additionally, if you dealt with that case, it would blow to smithereens your asinine contention that anyone who condemns Jabbar's assault must be a racist.

Not to worry; you already made clear your mindless racism with all your race baiting comments. Every time you write anything you indict both your integrity and your intelligence. You have none of either.

    • Peter Nagy
Peter Nagy 3 years ago +1

You are an idiot and an ass, +Imad Basayev. You cannot argue anything without fitting it into your unintelligent prefab narratives. To do this, you have to ignore facts. I have condemned a white athlete who did the same thing Jabbar did; Marty McSorely. If your tiny little brain could deal with that, the issue would only be whether or not anyone is justified in waiting till an altercation, athletic or otherwise, calms down, even temporarily, and lashing out with an unexpected punch, in fact, an unseen punch. I might as well be trying to tai to an amoeba.

  • Marquis De Suave

This all happened in the first minute of the first game of the season, and Kent Benson was trying to show the league what kind of player he was going to be in the NBA. Well, he did, because there was no other player in the league who played dirtier or got his ass handed to him more than Kent Benson over the rest of his lackluster career.
Benson was also the guy who was such a douche that he got Larry Bird to quit IU.

    • Peter Nagy
Peter Nagy 2 years ago +2

+Imad Basayev One other person testified here that he saw the same thing I did. In a court of law, that is not enough to convict anyone, but a tape of the entire game would be. I do not have access to that. Your only reason for rejecting our testimony is that you want to stick to your conclusion, that Benson started it, and Jabbar was justified.

Since you insist on being so recalcitrant, I will give you another reference you cannot deny; Marty McSorely's knockout of Donald Brashear in a hockey game. Brashear was a violent "goon" who always led the league in penalties. He had started a fight with McSorely earlier in the same game and also inflicted a serious injury on one of his team mates. Like Jabbar. McSorely sought to equalize things with a blind side knockout. He was charged and convicted of assault.

A court of law often falls far short of a decent moral code, but still found McSorely's actions unjustified. Your justification of Jabbar's behavior shows that your morals are that of a street thug.

    • Peter Nagy
Peter Nagy 3 years ago +2

+Imad Basayev Jabbar started the confrontation. They were roughly jockeying for position. He tried to move Benson out of the lane, but couldn't. The refs called nothing. Jabbar took it into his own hands, pulling next to Benson as they ran to the other end of the court. He elbowed Benson three times in the side. Benson elbowed him back harder. Nothing happened on the other end, but when they returned to the side of the court where Jabbar threw the punch, Jabbar elbowed Benson again. That is when Bensonn doubled Jabbar over. Jabbar then sucker punched Benson.

I conveniently ignored nothing. You thought the part of the action showed on the video is all there is to it. You now have three choices:

      1. Admit that you did not know the whole story.

      2. Call me a liar and insist that I made up all I said.

      3. Admit that what I said might be true, but with street thug values you still justify what Jabbar did.

I saw the entire sequence on television when it happened, but since I do not have the video, you and other Jabbar worshippers call me a liar. You are like most moronic Americans who think that the problems with Iran began with the Ayatollah Khomeini's anti-West dictatorship, because that is all the media told you. Since major political events are more important than violence during a basketball game, that one can be looked up. In fact, the US began interfering toxically with Iranian politics beginning in 1953 with the CIA overthrow of democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammed Mozadegh. It installed and supported for decades thereafter the hated Shah Mohammed Rezah Pahlavi. I can just hear you telling someone, "Show Mozadegh's assassination on video or it did not happen."

I feel zero sympathy for Benson. It's well known that his cruel treatment of Larry Bird after his arrival at IU as a freshman was a major factor in Bird's decision to leave after 24 days. Bird said he would always try that little bit harder any time he played against a team Benson was in. And it was a cheap shot anyway. he got what he deserved. Kareem was suspended for 20 games and fined. DOn't know how many games Benson missed due to the broken facial bones, and after reseaching I can't find any info on wether or not he was suspended. This was the same season Kermit Washington almost killed Tomjonovich with his punch. An elbow to the gut isn't going to cause a serious injury.

  • imadbasayev
    imadbasayev 5 years ago

Either both of them should've been suspended or neither of them. It takes two to tango and Benson was equally at fault. Just cause Kareem came out on top doesn't mean that he should be punished more severely, because after all someone has to win. If anything the winner should get a pass and the mug who started it and lost should be fined and suspended for biting off more than he could chew.
