Hey ya'll! It was a really interesting experience making a dialogue-based game for the Blackthornprod Game Jam. These are the type of games that I've always loved to play! Let me know if you have any suggestions on what we might be able to add to the game, I really want to add puzzle aspects but I'm not too sure how to approach it yet. Can't wait to work on this game again!
I actually have not, but i've seen it around a lot on Twitter. I will definitely check it out, hopefully it will bring some inspiration!
Have you played a game called Jenny LeClue? If not, I highly recommend it. It is an Indie game on Steam (and probably other platforms). It's a Nancy Drew type of mystery game, but the format of the game is almost exactly like what you made. linear walking and solving all sorts of puzzles along the way. Also a really great story. You game reminded me of it, so might be a possible direction you can go in!
Yes
Nice creation, and very enjoyable video. Some of those old english terms are extremely stylish and funny, I'll try and place at least one in a future video ;D! Whiffle whaffle is a favorite.
Thank you so much Noa! We really enjoyed putting all that quirky dialogue in! Would be fun to see you use some of those words haha
Congrats on 2K! Cool game. I really appreciate the amount of research that went into the setting. Between the art, dialogue, and music, you definitely hit the nail on the head for the overall feel of being a medieval servant. Or at least what I would imagine it would feel like haha. Nice job!
Thank ya Mr.Moo! My favourite part of game dev is getting all the different parts working together. Glad you liked the concept :)
This looks like a pretty uniqie game jam submission, so really well done! Going to call my friends fopdoodles from now on ๐
Thank you!! Haha yea these fopdoodles and lubberworts are everywhere xD
Really enjoyed playing this during the rating period ๐ have you thought about using something like Yarn for dialogue? There's a gui to build the dialogue in, then it serializes the data in separate files, and there's a YarnSpinner plugin for Unity that can handle implementing it.
Ooh thank you so much for playing! That Yarn Spinner plugin looks really nifty, I'll definitely have to check it out. I'll be redoing the entire dialogue system for the improved version for sure :) Thanks for that!
Great video! :) The game looks awesome and kudos for making a story driven game jam game. I always found that really hard to pull off! I don't know that much about Shakespeare but I definetely will play the game.
Thank you! Story driven was risky but it would be a fun idea so we took the plunge haha! Teamwork was definitely key for this one!
Really interesting watching this. You really have done something special here, every part of this game is well researched, well designed and well implemented. I love how well researched this was, it definitely shows! Great work
We love love love details! Thank you so much for the positive words!
What an awesome colab, and nice to see some proper thought put into the story and dialogue! ๐ช
Thanks Snuti! Stories are always so much fun to add to games!
Hey! Just found your channel when I was checking out the other devs in xtopyโs tip video. Love the game! Iโd never seen dotween before, thatโs super cool! I love the story, so funny and wholesome. You guys nailed the Shakespeare talk. Excited to see future content!
Hi! Welcome :D Thanks so much for checking out my channel and all these nice words! Dotween was awesome to work with, definitely recommend if you want snappy UI elements!
I really like the finished product!
I think this sets a perfect example of how to make a game by really polishing a core feature and going all the way with it (your dialogue system).
The rest of the game is still cute and charming, but having something like a dialogue system nets you a lot of flexibility.
Kudos again, looking forward to your next game jam video!
Thank youuu! Yep getting the dialogue system working nicely pretty much gave it the backbone to continue playing I think. Thanks so much for watching, next video coming soon -im a bit behind on it! :)
Playing the game was awesome!
Loved the lore of the project! Really well done!!!
Haha thank you for your support as always! ๐
This was a fun game until I broke the lift.
Great devlog, it's interesting to see the story behind the game.
Hahaha oh yea that elevator was pretty flakey ๐ Thanks for watching Skeffles!
The humour in the game was spot on and the devlog was great. So now, the real question, Sequel, When??
Thank you!! We'll definitely be coming back and improving this version :) Hopefully even get an hour of gameplay out of it at least!
Me: What is spaghetti code?

Ahh good old GameJam scripts :D
Nice DevLog by the way ๐๐
Me: Let's pretend we never saw that xD
Haha thanks for watching Yannick!
Hey bro,๐
You are all so talented! Despite the little time you really created something really good and original :D
Ah thank you so much whateep!
Teamwork makes the dreamwork~(says the always solo guy haha) :D Amazing work Manisha and other team members! You all should keep working on this for sure, it's a great little niche game and many people love point and click story driven games!
Teamwork is great! Everyone can bring their skills to the table and its awesome to see it come together. I'm always in awe when devs work solo, it's so cool. I'll be trying my first completely solo jam soon, hope I can pull it off hehe๐ and we definitely want to take this game further for sure!
Always quality content! Can't wait for the next one.
Thank ya!! :)
Great devlog, and cool game jam submission!
Thank you so much for watching!! :)
What a charming game! I've added it to my try out list. ๐
Haha thanks for watching Rob ๐
Very cool devlog! Really enjoyed watching it ^^
Thanks for watching ๐
Love it! Looks super professional ๐
Thanks girl
Fantastic! I definitely learned a lot on my Brackeys game jam. Funny video! Good job
Game jams are awesome for learning quickly! Do drop a link to your Brackeys game, would love to check it out :) And thanks for watching! ๐
Nice work on the jam! The old maid, definitely knew how to flirt ๐- The game was a lot of fun to play and the dialogue was just perfect!
Also think most devs (myself included) have that idea of in a jam you should try something new! Dotween looks so good! I need to try it out at some point! :D
@Wannibe Manisha Of course! Good look in the Chain Letter Jam too (if you are participating?) - It looks it! Thanks for the recommendation! :D
Hahah yupp! Thanks so much for the kind words Saul! Dotween was awesome and so easy to use, definitely recommend trying it out!
In next couple of months, this channel ID going to blow up
Shakespeare 101 was the best lol! DOTween is also on my list to try with my UI. Nice Game Jam Devlog!
I would consider taking that class if it was taught in game form hahah xD DoTween was awesome from the bit ive tried. Definitely will make UI look snappy. Thanks for watching!!
Haha that dialogue system code looks a little crazy. Great work anyways!
We doth not speak of the dialogue system ๐ค hahah was definitely sloppy but it did the job xD Thanks for watching!
Such a missed opportunity for your no doubt excellent voice acting skills! Good work on finishing something in 7 days, it seems like a good game overall, though I accidentally threw an item out of bounds and couldn't get it back, plus I kept forgetting what I was supposed to be doing, so a reminder would have been nice, from my perspective at least. It did seem like a very nice little game besides that though.
Perhaps you could even even offer up your voice acting skills to other game devs in general, and me in particular, in case I ever have need of them!
@Wannibe Manisha I eagerly await the newer version then, should be good! As I was playing it I was thinking I might be able to persuade you to add voice overs, so that might be worth waiting for (rather than trying to complete the game then)! It was the list that I threw out of bounds, so I was thinking I bet I needed it to complete the game so I may as well stop playing (though I did play it a bit further to see what else there was).
Good to hear that live action acting is your favourite, I definitely got the impression you enjoyed that kind of thing. I thought the Halloween Candy Contraption one was awesome, it's definitely my favourite video of yours, that I've seen at least. I'd say it literally deserves at least a thousand times as many views, though I don't normally watch stuff like that so maybe I don't know how stiff the competition is! I appreciated the background information about the Arduino and coding that went into it, though maybe for people who aren't as interested in that stuff it would have seemed a bit dry.
The cinematography, choice of music, costumes, acting etc was really on point though, you definitely seem to have a real flair for that stuff! (And your sister and friend added to it nicely as well of course) And it was sweet how you roped your Dad into helping out too, I imagine he's been roped into a lot of stuff over the years! The Blobs of the Jungle video was cool too, very wholesome and some of your mannerisms in the interludes were very endearing. It'd definitely be cool to see some more of your acting from over the years, especially the action clip!
That makes sense about the gender of the protagonist, seems natural to draw from whatever you were drawing influences from, so if you were drawing influence from Shakespeare then a male protagonist makes sense. The fame definitely has a fun script, so it seemed like voice acting would definitely be a good fit for it! And I'm curious to see how you'll handle the voice acting for the male protagonist haha.
Haha yea voiceovers would be awesome! Thank you for the additional feedback, I am adding it to my list :)
Live action acting is my favourite too -as seen a couple of my other videos (Blobs of the Jungle, Halloween Candy Contraption). I used to do a tiny bit of acting for my friend's videos years back, even did an action clip loll but I feel more comfortable in a directing role.
We didn't overthink the gender of the protagonist. We usually just go with what we feel, and as much as I love female protagonists, this game seemed to work well with a male character!
@Wannibe Manisha Hopefully you will add voice acting to the newer version too then! You're welcome. Another thing is it wasn't always clear who was talking, so that's something you could fix, eg I thought the main character was the one flirting with the (old) woman until his inner monologue kicked and realised it must have been the other way around.
That's good to hear about the voice acting! What about 'live action' acting, would you be down for that too?
Also, what made you decide to go with a male protagonist when you were a (mostly) female team, out of interest? It certainly made a pleasant change from the "kill all men" type stuff you see from some women!
Haha never considered voice acting really! Thanks for checking out the game. There were a couple bugs in there, we'll definitely clean that up for the newer version! Thanks for the suggestions! I'm definitely down to try voice acting for anyone who wants it :)
I love it as always !!!
Thanks for your support as always :D
When i see Devblogs, a get that burst you talked about the last video. And know im talking with a few friends about make a game together. i hope it goes well
@Wannibe Manisha You are awesome.- Thanks.
Yea devlogs are an awesome way to get motivated. I got a huge burst this week too! Build on it and keep it up. Wishing you luck on your new game ๐
this is cool
Thanks friend!
Wait, is it Henry the 4th or Henry the 6th? ;)
@Wannibe Manisha :D
Henry the 4th!!! That was a typo hahah I definitely know my Shakespeare and roman numerals ehem๐ค ๐
Nice ;D
