Apple iPadOS review: A clear new direction

  • Published on Sep 30, 2019
  • At the end of the day, I can’t help but feel that iPadOS 13 is a more significant update than iOS 13 - not only does it include more stuff, it also suggests we’ll start to see the feature gap between iPhones and iPads grow wider before long. Good. That’s how it should be - Apple has long insisted that the iPad represented its vision for the future of computing, and it’s about time the software powers it all steps it up.

Basically they are trying to be a 2 in 1 without being a 2 in 1. Copying the surface pro. What happened Apple you used to be a leader not a follower.

Watch Apple very closely. As macOS advantages diminish or languish, iPad capabilities increase. IPad starts at the bottom, macOS starts at the top. IPad is raising, macOS is lowering. Apple knows what they are doing. IPad is the future of personal computing. With iPad OS and Siri Shortcuts, it’s beginning to brush up against the Apple 30 year old vision of computing. (Look elsewhere on TheXvid for Apple’s Knowledge Navigator video.) The iPad is a Knowledge Navigator.
People often seem bound and determined to turn the iPad into a laptop. It is NOT a laptop, and it is not seeking to be one. It is silly to connect a mouse to it and try to make it act like a MacBook Pro. It is an entirely different (what’s a computer?) paradigm. It is as fundamentally different from the desktop and overlapping windows metaphor of the Mac as the Mac was to the command line. (Not that I wouldn’t love a command line interface underneath iOS but that would be wrong.)
The first thing many people (way to many) ask about the iPad is “Can it replace my laptop.) The answer is yes. It will do everything that 99% of daily personal computer users do. Will it handle the workload of a large video editing workstation? Of course not. (Not today anyway), but that’s not who it is targeted at and it really gets annoying when those people try to suggest that the iPad is worthless. It could handle their day to day IT needs as well, even if it isn’t their primary work machine.
For most people though, those other “Professionals” out there... i.e. doctors, lawyers, office administrators, law enforcement officers, publicists, writers, directors, actors, researchers, STUDENTS, knowledge and information workers of all types, the iPad has you covered. You just have to learn to use it properly.
What I see people do often is get it home, figure out that it doesn’t work anything like their conventional computer, and it winds up in the back seat of the car with the children so they can watch movies. If that’s all you need, get an Amazon Kindle or some silly little Android device.
You really have to learn to use it though. Sit down with a cup of coffee on a Sunday afternoon and your iPad and watch videos like this one, and learn to use it. You’ll find that the amount of productivity is amazing. The ability to create many pairs of apps using side by side multitasking is deceptive in how it allows you to focus on work. Add the slide over apps (which are persistent) and it becomes a powerful personal computing device hiding in sheep’s clothing. It has to be tried though.

IPad OS falls short on lightning connector iPad. External devices do not connect well. You have to have USB C iPad Pro to fully utilize external hard drive.

I have a bit of a conundrum. My 2012 MacBook Pro died a few days ago and I need a replacement. I really can’t afford a new MacBook Pro, so I’ve been looking into the 2017 10.5 inch IPad Pro, is it a good choice as a replacement? I really didn’t use my Mac as I could have, I mostly read stuff, watched TheXvid, wrote stuff, used it for high school and simple video editing. Is it a good idea to get the 2017 version or should I get the 2019 ones? Right now, I just need a device for college, “a tool for creation” that can handle writing, video & photo editing, and streaming. Help

I love the iPad but I will never use it as a Computer. It''s a really great tablet to do specific tablet things. Because of its lightweight design and touchscreen there are some tasks that are better than on any other device. For example, I'm a musician and we use it for mixing our in-Ear monitors on stage. It's really efficient and I can't imagine using a laptop for that task...
But as soon as you start doing regular computer stuff, like handling files or document processing you start to realize how crazy fast a regular keyboard (shortcuts!)&mouse setup on a windows based UI really is. And iPadOS won't change that... You can do more than before, but it's still nowhere near an actual Laptop when it comes to efficiency. And that's what makes especially the iPad Pro a weird product for me. Who should buy that? Who would really profit from the increased screen size and processing power? Maybe artists who use the pen? But that is such a niche thing. I think 95% of iPad users are perfectly fine with an iPadAir2 or newer. For ~200-300$ it's very good value. But for anything more it's just not worth it.
-->Buying a Laptop for ~700$ and a regular iPad for ~300$ is so much better use of your money compared to buying an iPad pro for 1000$.

Makes sense for the larger form factors, but honestly I feel like the mini or even my 9.7 inch really are not much more than up-sized iPhones and don't exactly have the real estate to effectively take advantage of a lot of these new and fiddly iPadOS features. I'm sticking with my old iOS.

Ok! Now! Has anyone already noticed that the Files app is clearly inferior to the app Documents? For instance, still there is no way to add multiple Google Drives to the available sources, without having to re-login between Google accounts. One other thing, the inability to unzip multiple rar files (in that regard Documents is absolutely amazing). And one other major thing. Downloads directly to iCloud.
I believe the new design has an ulterior objective behind it, it has an hidden plan: by putting every download you make in iCloud, with no way of altering the default destiny, Apple is creating a difficult experience to the user (specially if you don’t have an iCloud paid plan and you don’t want one). Since I installed iPadOS, I’ve been living a nightmare managing my files. Something I could do pretty fast with the previous OS version, cleaning my local files whenever I needed space, by uploading my files to the preferred cloud service (MY cloud service) has now become a series of convoluted steps that require you to clean frequently your iCloud Drive, RE-download the files you wanted to be “downloaded” in the first place (and not “uploaded” to iCloud) and re-upload the files to the intended cloud service, and go back to iCloud and effectively delete the files (because obviously, when you thought you were moving files, as implicitly stated on the button “move” pressed before, you in fact weren’t). I hate this hypocrisy from Apple designers and programmers. We the customers are considered as highly influenced sheep.

It should've been iPadOS 1 !!!!! Why 13, that's messed up. Does that mean it will always be updated at the same time with iOS? Why? What for?

Cut and trimmed videos now has 2 copies, the original unedited copy is still in there as in MP4 format, the edited one is in mov format, you can see both of them when connected to PC, but only get to see thE edited one under IPADOS, it’s taking up all the free space in your ipad. Worse, the edited video can be undone by anyone to see the cut out parts which you don’t want others to see. Hurry! You better get back home speeding over 150 kph to snatch that edited video off your wife’s hands before it’s too late, if she knows how to access the EDIT feature of undoing the jobs done on the video! You don’t want to download the update, but it would download it and taking more free space in your iPad, worse, in some case the new update made the game gone so much slower!

Crazy! Edited video can be undone, you thought the trimmed and cut video are safe for others to view, but if they knew how to access the trim and cut feature, then they can view the part you want to conceal for privacy reasons! Also the latest update would be downloaded into your iPads even if you’ve disabled auto download and install! Taking up space. On older model iPad, the latest update made a game named CSR2 slowed down a lot ! ... it tricked you into believing making a very long recording of video is ok because you can trim and cut down on it’s size later on, but it only set the A to B view point of play length and keeping the original video file size for no matter how short you’ve cut it short!

Still longing for a full fledged MacOS on my iPad Pro. It does more than before but it still feels like a glorified/larger iphone. I wish the Pro model would go head to head with the surface pro and offer a full OS, not this mobile version with mobile apps. I want full MacOS apps with a couple Thunderbolt 3 ports

@Lord Asclepius Nah that Dex style is gimmicky and very limited in functionality.
They would have to obviously revise MacOS to accommodate touch. But honestly MacOS doesn't do all that bad with a touchscreen as it is. I would know, I put MacOS onto a Dell XPS 15 with full touch capability. They really just need to add gestures and window scaling to accommodate touch better. Otherwise works really well. An iPad that goes head to head with Surface would be ideal.

    • Lord Asclepius
      Lord Asclepius 2 months ago

That would be terrible, Mac OS is not optimized for touch. I have used Windows tablets in the past and yeah no, a desktop operating system doesn’t belong to a tablet unless you do a massive overhaul and you have strong support from 3rd party developers. Maybe a desktop mode when hooked up to a monitor.. something like Dex Mode, that’s definitely a great upgrade.
