Taking Phasma hostage would have generated more interest in Episode IX. It would have been a development we could have anticipated but whose outcome we wouldn’t have known going into the next film. And, yeah, character development and not ... wasting freaking Brienne of Tarth. Or Finn’s character arc.

It's funny, you say it's all about execution and then, go on in almost every sentence proving that the story is full of holes. Be consistent, say both story and execution suck!

It's more than just a problem with execution. It's more about the fact that Rian Johnson apparently never learned the 'Yes, and' principle from improv. When you're working with a continuing story ...YOU HAVE TO CONTINUE THE STORY FROM WHERE THEY LEFT OFF. He not only completely ignored questions and plot threads woven in The Force Awakens, he straight up disrespects them and goes off in his own direction with no regard for what came before. Basically, Rian's just a pompous asshole who's way too full of himself.

There probably was stuff in the original trilogy that looking back didn't make sense... but... the original trilogy was making it up as it went along, there wasn't decades of established lore for it to abide by and stay consistent with. Hell the original was suppose to be a cheaply made film they didn't expect to go anywhere. Now? Star Wars is a massively popular sci-fi setting that is engrained in popular culture.
So no, saying the originals have flaws that were just ignoring so we should give these new films some slack is a argument dead of arrival.

Rian Johnson's biggest mistake was giving his audience enough credit to think he didn't need to have the characters outright say "Finn's suicide run was going to fail. Suicide isn't always the right answer, ya'll."
    But you sure showed him!

For the people complaining that we aren't nitpicking the OT for similar things, I'd say that there wasn't 30 years of back story to fill in, for people to nitpic about. TLJ comes after 30 years of history that NEEDS to he filled in, before most of the new trilogy can make sense. For people that didn't watch the OT or the prequels, a back story isn't needed, really, but it would have been nice for them to know what the hell is going on, and why any of this matters. It's not just the execution. It's the story.

Say what? Ryan was a good writer? If anything this movie showed he didn't know anything about writing. He was like a boy in a sandbox throwing toys around not knowing what to do with them so it all gets so stupid. He takes everyone and makes them so lacking in depth and stupid simple.
He somehow thought he was being smart with all these twists and turns but none of them led anywhere and were pointless. No, This guy is a class one moron who could never seem to understand the Star Wars universe. He is very 2 dimensional with everyone and everything in the movie.
I would approve of his relocation to a garbage collector and have him stay away from the movie industry because he doesn't know what the hell he is doing there.

Although she is a poorly written character I liked Rey. Daisey Ridley did an awesome job with the script that she had to work with. In fact, all of the actors did a great job with the character scripts that were handed to them. The problem lays with the nutjobs who wrote the script. Plus, they seem to be moving away from the original Stars Wars trilogy. They are catering to a different generation of fans. And, of course, that is going to upset the diehard Star Wars fans. I personally enjoyed seeing Rey in the pilot seat of the Millennium Falcon. That being said, as much as I can sit here and nitpick The Last Jedi, it is a watchable movie.

Honestly, apart from the casino planet, the movie is either in space, Lukes planet, or the salt world. Why are we spending so much time on dead worlds? Star wars movies usually took us to interesting places. Say what you want about the first 3 films, but at least the scenery was nice. The casino planet was actually somewhere to go and that's why I think they forced the plot into it. Don't get me wrong, the casino planet didn't really have a point at all but they had to take us somewhere so they went with it.

The even dumber thing I don’t even know if rian Johnson watched TFA because in that movie they established that the first order are technically the rebels. The first order is basically doing a coup in the first movie. That scene where they destroyed the 4 planets, was supposed to be them destroying the new government of the galaxy. So the fact that the resistance kept being called rebels doesn’t make an ounce of sense. Also he ruined a bunch of established things in Star Wars such as in he beginning scene with the bombers. Why would you ever use those bombers if the y wing can do the same thing, better, and the ships won’t blow themselves up. Also atmosphere barriers have been established, all they needed to do to get people to stop complaining about the opening scene where she was exposed to space, was put a light blue sheen behind her. Boom done people shut up, but it was this lack of attention to detail that messed up this movie.

Rose's character doesn't work, but not for the reasons you think. You said the kiss doesn't make sense. It makes perfect sense, if you follow her character arc from beginning to end, and pay attention to what she says.
We first encounter her crying because she lost her sister. She is not being consoled by other people, she is not with friends, she is not in her bunk with the rest of the people. She's alone. Isolated. So her sister was her only friend she had on this ship, they must have joined up together.
She then points out how she heard about Finn's exploits, and basically fangirls over him. So she has him as a bit of a celebrity in her eye. She's smitten by the idea of Finn the hero.
At the earliest opportunity, she jumps at the chance to go on a mission with Finn, because she wants to be near him, and whatever he does next.
During their mission, she opens up emotionally and tells Finn who she is and where she comes from. This isn't something you do with somebody you just met, it's somebody you believe you have an emotional connection with. He doesn't recoil, and she confirms this as true love in her mind. He hates the same things she hates, because of his history with TFO. She has the equivalent of a celebrity crush, and she's falling in love with him on Canto Bite. Already forgotten is her sister, not even mentioned once after the crying. Why? Because she believes Finn is all she needs now. She becomes emotionally invested and tied to Finn, with rose-colored glasses, is willing to follow him to hell if need be. She feels a connection with him she hadn't known she could, especially after they nearly die on TFO's ship, and escape. High adrenaline situations breed intimacy very commonly, and she's basically falling in love with him as they go through their mission.
When they get to the salt planet, she's already in love with him, and has used him to replace her sister, now dependent on him. So when she sees him trying to sacrifice himself in order to defeat the weapon, she can't handle it. She can't handle losing yet another person she loves. It doesn't matter if they've only known each other for hours, she was already in love with the idea of him, hearing about his heroism, coupled with the loss of her sister, with nobody else to be emotionally comforted by, and to top it all off, having your life threatened in high adrenaline situations with the man, she has fallen head over heels for him, and can't bear to see him go.
So she does what any other irrational person does in the situation. She tries to go full Bonny and Clyde, attempting a sort of suicide pact, killing herself and himself instead of losing him. So she rams his ship with hers, with no reasonable expectation that colliding with another ship at full speed could possibly be survivable by you, or the target, she is willing to die with him, than to experience the trauma of losing this new emotional crutch of hers. We see the two ships break into thousands of pieces, fly everywhere, and disintegrate. Only through plot armor and contrivance do both of them survive, but since she doesn't know she's a character in a movie, she thought they would die together.
If we look at the final words she spoke before falling unconscious, they make sense with this. Save who we love, not fight who we hate. Taking that at face value, it makes little sense since people fight what they hate *in order* to save what they love, especially if these people are threatening the people you love. We fight because its necessary, not because we want to. But if we look at it in the context of her character arc, she didn't want to fight, she just wanted to run away with him, to save him and be with him. And she's rather die with him, than let him die for a noble cause. The person being saved in her mind, was herself. She was scolding him for trying to leave the living world without her, thinking he ought to have known what that would do to her.
She's a psychopath, has an unhealthy celebrity worship syndrome, probably would have been stalking Finn if they hadn't met then, thinks they are meant to be together forever even though they had only barely met, but is willing to go on a secret mission with him against the orders and without the knowledge of the resistance leadership, then after surviving harrowing situations with him, tries to kill herself and him, in order to prevent him from sacrificing himself.
Why the hell is that in a Disney film?

  • Ony

The film would have been so mind blowing and cool if they killed off Rey and forced Finn to be the hero even though he doesn't have the force. Like, wait you don't have to be a magical chosen one to be the hero in SW?

Disney has been guilty of this in general, but she just isnt a Star Wars character. she literally feels like an SJW from your local university that got catapulted into space for the benefit of society.

I see that this video is 33 minutes long--then listen to about 30 seconds of his "uhs" and "ums" and think to myself--the fuck I'm gonna listen to THAT shit for 33 fucking minutes.

I would advise skipping to the 10-minute mark.
      The opening is really bad.

That casino subplot just ruined the pacing of 'the chase' and the fact that it was meaningless in the end, really made it frustrating.
This movie was one long, although pretty, misfire. A gross misuse of creative capital: Admiral Ackbar, Luke, Snoke.

I didn't think Rose was that bad. Sure, she had clunky delivery of some of her lines, but she was still enjoyable to watch. Though I see why she is kinda useless.

I got the feeling from episode 6 that the whole overall theme for this trilogy is that History just keeps repeating itself throughout this galaxy. Which is meritorious, however they are poopooing the specific details. Take that and the adding of all Kennedy's input, the SJW P.C. themes, ugh... that's the worst

Killing off Snoke made no sense to me either. They spent time building him up, making it a cliff hanger, and then Kilo just goes and cuts him down like it's no big deal in the next film?? It's like what a pointless waste of a good character

What I don't get: if they are really trying to show strong women leaders and characters, why does Rose, and Holdo too, make the worst military decisions possible? Like, they objectively prove the opposite case, that women shouldn't be leaders and decisionmakers on the battlefield.

I would've loved it if this game had Finn and Poe going on the mission to find the codebreaker. But one of the things that annoys me the most about these new movies is the sheer incompetence of leadership in both the First Order and the Resistance.
