I bought a copy of the original Jurassic Park novel at a library used book sale; the version the movie was based on, instead of vice versa. The cover was tearing and badly creased, and it eventually ended up covered in tape; but I treasured that find all the same and read it over and over for years until the pages fell out. It was a great find.

In all fairness to the thumbnail, a computer is more or less useless without the monitor, and “free and useless” is still useless (Rule of Acquisition #109 - Dignity and an empty sack is worth the sack). You don’t give away a pressure washer for free and then charge extra for the hose attachments that came with the darn thing in the first place. If anything, the company should have done as Rubbermaid does. Charge for the tote (computer) throw the lid (monitor) in for free.

I'm guessing the CB in the first story was doing makeup as part of an MLM or something. She was offering to do makeup that the other woman had to pay for, she did a crappy job at it, and she was bad at managing money. All the hallmarks of someone in an MLM.

I almost have the same problem with my bff. She owns me a lot of money for 10 years now. Every time I ask her again for the money, she is so broke and her children need to eat, yada, yada, yada. But in the last ten years, she spent thousands for her kids clothes, because used clothes for kids are "not good enough". When we go shopping together, she always buys expensive stuff and than she has "so much trouble paying rent". Even if she had sent me about 5 Euro per month in the last ten years, her debts with me would be paid off. But she doesn't do it, because she has no money. She is working, has child support from two baby daddies and has all in all a pretty good life. If her daughter wouldn't my goddaughter, I would probably stopped being in contact with her for a long time. I don't understand people like that. If I owe people money, what does not happen often, because I don't like the feeling, I make sure to give it back to them whatever it costs.

I think library woman wanted a perfect copy so she could sell it. I've seen people do that, going to library sales and buying the books in the best condition, regardless of having no real interest in the book itself, and then sell them online. I go to a lot of library sales. Not only do you get a book you want for a couple of bucks, but the money goes back into the purchasing account to buy new books for everyone. Perfect.

I LOVE the computer story. Too often I hear stories about CBs where no-one seems to deal with them, they just let tings slide. It's wonderful to see a CB getting exactly what they deserve. To be called out in front of everyone is even better. She now knows no-one will help her again because they finally feel they can tell her to piss of and no-one will think they're horrible for doing so. I bet everyone in that office really hates her, but have felt social pressure to let her get away with things. Not anymore.

All these stories sound fake or super exaggerated, and even if they aren't, the source they come from thrive on an environment where popularity is equal to how unbelievable a story is. Listening/getting these videos recommended to me always infuriates because of this. it also doesn't help that your voice is super... Unnatural? If I were to explain it I would put as an annoying salesman trying to sell me something, but not doing a good job of it. Also, having to regurgitate a kindergarten grade level life lesson for every story you tell doesn't help because a lot of this shit is so obvious ergo unbelievable.

I have really bad ADHD (I can’t even do things I enjoy like video games, reading or comic conventions because of inability to focus and sensory overload) this also means I have really bad impulse control and judgment, and end up spending all my money and having to scrape by, however I avoid asking for handouts and pick up extra shifts because I have a theory that eventually I’ll learn if I suffer enough XD. I’m also putting myself through university and my loan doesn’t even cover half of what I need.
So I can definitely relate to someone who’s irresponsible with money but you need to try and tackle that problem and not expect others to bail you out otherwise you’ll never be able to effectively save money.

Once upon a time, there was Bob. He was a regular citizen. One morning when he woke up and went downstairs, he saw a random woman in his kitchen preparing coffee. "What are you doing in my house?" asked the kind man. In witch response she said "coffee... and get out of my house." Bob was cofused and said: "What do you mean, I own this house and paid hard earned money for it!" The woman responded calmly: "Here listen. I'm a choosing beggar and I do not just ask for things, I ask for more than that's resonable and then proceed to take my rightful posessings (aka. property) anyway, you want it or not." Bob got a weird look on his face and decided to start his counter argument: "But..." -he said when suddenly he got interrupted by you guess who: "NOW GET OUT OF MY HOUSE, MY KIDS DESERVE IT MORE THAN YOU DO!" -she yelled. Bob started saying: "I-i...", but then the woman started shouting: "I'LL CALL THE COPS!" After that Bob stated: "Th..." aaand the woman added: "...and sue you for home intrusion and sexual assault for at least $1,000,000" - The woman ended up being arrested by Bob who was a police officer, sued with the help of his brother who was a judge and getting her children taken by CPS on top of 40 years of jailtime for drugs, assaults, property intrusions, harassments, attempted murder, child abuse, threathening, shooting in public places, hijacking a metro, robbery, identity teft, sexual assault, pedophile activity, staring at innocent trees, property damage, spying, illegal sales, terrorism, attempted revolution, derailing a train, being unlicenced truck driver, being overweight, entitlement, assaulting a dozen police officers, being a jerk and begging. -The moral of the story: don't be a choosing beggar. TLDR; Just read the text if you want to and don't if you can't bother.

I was browsing Amazon for a copy of a book I really wanted, and found one of the listings was from a library a couple towns over. I contacted them and they said they’ll set it aside for me so I can go pick it up myself. The price was half of the retail price, and the condition was way better than they were letting on in the listing (I kid you not, it was near perfect). I was really happy to have found it and gotten it the way that I did.

Most (the actuall novels, not the kiddy books lol) are in perfect condition, the only problem with some is just yellowing on the paper. Books can be in great/perfect condition for a long long long time if stored and protected properly.

Funny story to go off the library one: about six years ago, my grandmother got me the full set of Harry Potter books for Christmas. Awesome, right? But she couldn't find book #2 brand new, so she gave me a copy from a used book store. I didn't care, a book is a book, regardless of age. But she was so distraught that she couldn't find #2 new, and she kept telling me over and over again that she would find me a new copy, while I told her that she didn't have to and it didn't matter because it book was fine the way it was. She got me a new copy for my birthday a few months later.

Real life tip: some fast food places like Dunkin’ Donuts or KFC or Taco Bell will give you free food that’s been there for awhile that’s still good right before they’re closing. Don’t ask flat out, unless you’re really hungry and can’t afford more and willing to eat whatever from their menu, ask if they happen to have anything nobody wanted or most times, especially towards closing, cashiers will ask if you want extra that’s just going to be thrown away. My older sister’s best friend used to work at KFC and would bring home a lot of potatoes and gravy and so many chicken pot pies, and my mom would go to Dunkin’ Donuts after work late at night and manage to get a couple of free donuts. And this cool cashier at Taco Bell we would go to after work, would ask if we wanted cinnatwists or burritos because they have to throw them out and they get in trouble if they’re seen taking the food home without paying or handing food out to the homeless in the alley near the dumpsters (the franchise owner watched the security cameras back there).

That computer story is so fake..it's too convenient that only the people in the front heard their boss. What boss even calls a meeting to tell the employees about new computers?
Also the I.T was backing everything up, but the old computers were still at their desks?
People were taking the computers without the business making sure they were all 'reset'?
Also you don't reset computers back to "factory settings." They're not phones. You have to wipe all the HDDs/SSDs. There is no magical reset button.
Finally, if those computers were so bad the company didn't want them, why would anyone take them? Because it would mean their parts aren't even worth selling in the company's eye.

    • LittleMaliceManny
      LittleMaliceManny Month ago

I mean, doing a fresh install of the OS is pretty much the software equivalent of "factory reset." And unless you're being REALLY careful, for extremely sensitive trade secrets, you could just reformat the drives. It's not that complicated or time-consuming.
I have never heard of a company just giving away the old PCs, though. They usually sell, repurpose, or gift to a charity for the tax write-off.

The wedding story really hits close to home, i'm alway short and my dad is always helping, and i even feel guilty just trying to sell my merch liek my teshirts even though its all original content so anything original i make i return 50% of the profits to a charity cause i guess i dont feel like i'm worty enough to get money just for producing content and need to give back in some way

Maybe computer lady doesn't know where or how to buy a monitor or doesn't even know that the monitor isn't a vital component. Some people don't even know the difference between a monitor and a computer and think that turning off the monitor also turns off the computer.

I knew someone who had no furniture and her kids slept in sleeping bags on the floor but always dressed like a model and drove an expensive car. She expected me to babysit her 3 rowdy boys because I was home on maternity leave and she thought I should do it out of the goodness of my heart because “I was just sitting home doing nothing while she had to work and we had been “friends” since we were kids”. I had a new born and my ex had decided he didn’t want to be a husband and father..refusing to pay child support, while she was receiving generous child support from all three of her kids’ fathers and had a high paying job. Oh, and I was taking a computer course at the same time so I could get a promotion when I returned to work. I told her no but she proceeded to drop her kids off in the morning until I called her father and told on her, he was a really nice man. The drop offs stopped.

most modern computers can be connected to your flat tv with a HDMI cable,
so you do not need a dedicated monitor for normal computer stuff

you do for medium to highend gaming though

@JinzoDefiler I don't understand how my comment was translated to LGBTQ but ok. And second I was saying that there are charitys that help people with food if needed. And no in not LGBTQ and its not my right to judge them.

That must be one well-off company to say to its workers "Your old computer consoles are being replaced, so you can take the old ones home," my workplace would rather just push the old ones onto other teams who need more computers rather than just giving it away to employees for free.
