Xiaomi Mi Mix 3: is a slider better than a notch?

  • Published on Jan 29, 2019
  • The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is one of the first phones that uses a manual slider to reveal the front camera. We’re probably going to see this design from a few different manufacturers in 2019 - rumors are that the OnePlus 7 will have a similar sliding design, and we wouldn’t be surprised if we see other phones from Oppo, Vivo, Honor, Huawei, and more with this mechanism. You have to really ask yourself, how much do you hate the notch to prefer a design like this?
Correction: It appears that Xiaomi isn’t actually using springs for the Mi Mix 3's sliding screen, but is instead using a set of magnets to allow the screen to slide between the two positions and stay put until you push it back. It’s a clever system, but we’re still not convinced the system will be as durable as a non-sliding device.

Its very durable and it is very good and easy thing to do just slide it! you really have to be autistic if you drop the phone while doing it😂 why you hate so much the slider and you definently have not done any research BC you think its gonna brake or something 😂 and its not awkward to use at all..

Yes the verge as usual thinks it knows better and everyone else with a different perspective is wrong xD the best problem they could find is that it's hard to slide it down. It's not like it's going all the way. The BB was way more hard to keep in your hand when you slide it than the mi mix 3. Idk what kinda hand you have. Seems like the easier things just slip through your hands and the harder things stays in. Hmmm lol interesting.

Can't understand why people are calling "nitpicking" here.
Everything he said is valid. You get a heavy phone with a small battery. And sliding the display down could make it easier for you to drop it.
Are all those compromises really worth it to skip a "hole" or small notch??

I don't use front camera, the notch is stupid for me. This is perfect and I mean PERFECT way to deal with the notch for me... I'm super happy Xiaomi thought of it.
P.S.: Slider is simple magnet so I don't think it will break down before the rest of the device.

I re watched the video a few times and this review was terrible for multiple reasons. You pushed possible problems to seem worse then they are with some false information. You said terrible battery life but you said that from the specs because from Other reviews and test it gets great battery despite it's size an compares well with other phones life that have bigger batteries.
Just gonna touch on it that it uses magnets not springs
Most people run a case anyway so dust wouldn't be a big problem to most. Same with no water proofing most people don't get there phone submerged in water.
You can select things when using the slide but it doesn't register the touch during or before the the sliding act.
These are just the more important things I wanted to point out that we're just false claims

The LG v20 is the master example of what can be done with the notch. Make it a second screen / task bar for recent apps! I love being able to quickly switch between my 5 most recent apps and have notifications not pop up in the middle of the screen. will be incredibly sad when I finally have to put this phone to rest. I'm honestly not a fan of just increasing the vertical real estate space just for the sake of it.

Remember, sliding phones have existed in the past. Before my first iPhone in 2008, I owned a Nokia N95, where you had to slide the phone to use the music player and the keypad. Because we're so used to the current smartphone form factor, with its big screen all dominant and no moving parts, anything else just makes no sense these days. But sliding phones are more than feasible, there were a great many before the iPhone appeared, millions of people owned them and no one questioned their sturdiness, and the sliding mechanisms lasted just fine. Why should the idea be discarded? OK, pop-up cameras, or cameras that rise up almost hydraulically, yes they are a bit questionable. But a phone that slides isn't really that crazy, C'mon, if your 30 or over you've seen it work before...

I dunno why but among all the reviewers at The Verge, Dan nitpicks, criticizes and whines the most about any device. I honestly don't remember any review ending on a positive note about any device. He even tore the Galaxy S9 to shreds with his complaints comprising of 80% of the video. Nilay and Dieter on the other hand provides a more rounded reviews. This review was no different than the last ones. I'd suggest not handing over the majority of the reviews to Dan, it makes the audience lose interest if all one gets to know are the flaws of a device.
