  • The monsters in the books that kept you up at night as a kid have finally been brought to life, thanks to André Øvredal and his 2019 film “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.” The movie features a number of popular tales from the classic children’s books including “The Red Spot,” “Harold,” "The Dream," and “The Big Toe,” and weaves them together with a new story and new characters set in 1968. There are lots of references to the time period and Easter eggs from the books throughout. Here are all the details you may not have picked up on with your hands over your eyes.

Something that MY OWN GRANDPA noticed that I didn’t, is that the butler in the end of the movie (in Sarah’s house) is named Harold (who was the scarecrow).

My middle school during I think 2009 or 2010 had the original book which I took home and loved reading as a kid. Ones I remember a lot is Harold, The Red Spot, and Me Tie Dough-tie Walker from what the movie showed us. I think Dough-tie Walker I read is the one I re-read a lot

"Nightmareish children books" ?? I read these to my younger sisters in the mid 90s ( I was younger than 11yr old) .... they werent scary... they were ridiculous and so badly written that even then I was laughing at how bad the books were... the movie was just the same.. well done... and I liked it for nostalgia reasons.. but thats all there is to it..

The gangly man is actually from the story right before Me Tie Dough-ty Walker in the first book called “What Do You a Come For?” Where am old lady wishes she wasn’t so lonely and body parts fall out of her chimney and come together into a “gangling man” and starts dancing wildly. She then asks what he comes for and he says “I come for YOU!”.

There was one last Easter egg- not too big. But when Ramón picks up the journal in which Stella was writing her stories in, he mentioned a character, sam, who’s pet dog was really a sewer rat- that was a story in one of the original three books!

You missed that one part where Ramon picks up Stella’s journal of stories she’s written which mentions the plot of “Sam’s New Pet” from the 3rd book. I think this could be a setup into the next part of the series or was just foreshadowing what Stella must do to help Sarah. I just found it odd that she wrote the story and not Sarah.

I’ve watched a few of these “things you missed” videos and no one seems to notice the shout-out to the story about the guy who finds a dog; who turns out to be a rat. I believe it was one of Sarah’s short stories. Her friend goes, “oh so his dog turned out to be a rat all along?”

When the kids are at the hospital, you can hear one of the nurses calling a "Doctor Kauffman" twice. It may be a nod to a Silent Hill character, given del Toro's history with that series.

    !!
    Here's one you missed!!
Towards the beginning of the movie when Ramon first goes to Stella's house he picks up a story that she had been writing and reads it. The line is something like "-and Sam found out that his pet dog had been a sewer rat with rabies all along. That's pretty dark." --or something like that.
Anywho-! It was a callback to a story in the, I believe 3rd book, called 'Sam's New Pet.'
