So you only have mame? On my previous arcade cabinet i had 80 emulators and multiple versions of certain emulators to run everything as good as i could) I even configured and tested every mame game. Some are listed as not working but test them all. Maybe only player 2 is working on the us releases but a certain japanese version might do the trick. Or maybe you need to temper with the dipswitches a little. i would say that 90 to 95% of the mame romset is playable. Some with minor glitches. (use the latest version of mame with the latest romset and do all the updates) But please use better emulators if you can because mame is crap. A very fast dual core with a good graphics card (for some tekken games)and 8 gb of ram. A linux or a windows xp 32bit (and for certain newer games on nintendo consoles you need a 64bit). Use paragon to access your your roms on apfs or hfs formatted disks. Hyperspin is the best frontend but also the biggest and most complex to set up). It's very important to have all your data double or tripple so that you don't lose anything.

DIY is a bit misleading... Like, you bought a cabinet kit... That's probably the hardest part of the whole process, making a cabinet that looks good, has the right proportions and can hold a big tv...

Retroarch isn't open source as a whole it jurry rigs other legitimate emulators with MANY DIFFERENT LICENSES. Most of the emulators they choose as "cores" are not open source at all. They use GPL3.0 without actually reading the license and understanding GPL 3.0 licence is not compatible with any of the emulators meaning it actually violates the terms of service it uses. Many people including my self pointed this out to retroarch when they attempted to go after hyberkin for using their software claiming they were not following the GPL how they understood it which they clearly did not understand what a GPL actually is for both commercial and non-commercial use and permission isn't needed as it is in the license.

You could've gotten a cheap rasberry pi, there is also this software called retropi which you can use to create your own arcade system... With a rasberry zero you could make a gameboy, just need a small screen which you can buy on several sites. Rasberry pi's are very simple and easy to use especially with a project like this.

Linus, you got a few points false here:
    - You could have used your GunCon2. You don't need composite, but composite sync. That's included in your Luma and you could have take it from the appropriate wire. If you desired so, you could have used a sync stripper.
    - You did not buy Act Labs USB gun. As the name tells you it has an USB connector. You bought the non USB "GS", game port edition. Multiple editions exist.
    - Some old light guns do not need a CRT. They react to light in general.

Any chance you can put a build guide together that doesn't require sourcing and building a custom control deck, one-of-a-kind and impossible to find monitors, pre-built (aka expensive) paneling, and free accessory throw-ins that every day people wouldn't receive?

Aren't graphics card S-Video outputs limited to 480i in all circumstances? Upscaling 240p games to 480i can cause issues, namely making the image overly blurry.

Cheapest and best way to do this is a softmodded Nintendo wii, retroarch and component cables to a component crt (scart cable if you have a scart tv and a pal nintendo wii) this setup can output the native 240p perfectly on your crt. Oh yeah, use game cube controllers. The total cost will be under 100 dollars.
