NBA 2K20 Markets Gambling to Kids - Inside Gaming Daily

You know what, I HOPE more kids get into gambling. I've never won a single round of blackjack but if I'm up against a couple third graders... okay, I'd still lose. I was a lot smarter in the third grade than I am now. Thanks Obama

Well I more so think they already had it scheduled and planned for a long time. Simply put the Battlefront II thing did not change their schedule.

This is a stepping stone for Generation Alpha to grow up into gambling addicts and raffle out their entire bank accounts on slot machine, black jack, poker, craps, and roulette at a casino from paycheck to paycheck and live on the streets. We cannot have that. Card packs, loot boxes, loot whatever, safes, etc. is gambling and it does not belong in a full priced game, or even a free to play pay to win game. This is very disgusting.

If you're actually playing these EA games, you're an absolute dumbo with no tastes.
Even if they weren't doing all this dirty crap, their games are still shit.
Why would you pay for something that they can rush year after year as if it was an entirely new game when it's clearly recycled.
I wouldn't just blame the ESRB or PEGI , it's the dumb ass consumers who have zero foresight.
Open up and branch out to different games, you'll find out you've been toying with fecal matter all this time.

This mode is optional though. Many people who play this game probably will never touch MyTeam, or play MyPlayer enough to spend real money on it. They either play the franchise modes or play exhibitions with their friends. That's why you don't hear from the sports gamers. I play My Player on 2k18, got the game on sale for $2.99 and haven't spent a dime more. That being said, it should be rated T for the simulated gambling.

What people are failing to realize is that NBA 2K and other sport games can not survive with just 60$ every year like before because making these games today on these modern consoles cost a lot more money to make then you thrown in licensing fees for the NBA license, Licensing agreements for team brands, player likeness, music, clothing brands etc on top of making this game every year is very expensive Microtransactions are added to help with the cost of all of this and keep it going 60$ every year will not cut it we cant have it both ways yes there will be certain video game addicts that will pour real money into this game regardless of there financial position however you can not blame this on the developers just like you cant blame a liquor store for selling alchohol because an alcoholic may come in. So yes even though I dont like microtransactions but at this point it's a neccessary evil to keep these games going and running.

The wheel spins and other things you see are not gambling those are rewards you get from winning, the only "gambling" part of the game is opening packs.

I disagree completely that no one is upset about the microtransactions. Lots of people are upset but plenty of people are hopeful each successive year is not as bad as the last but then 2k continues to push even more. That's why I stopped buying the game because it's a rip off. If it was free to play then I would be more accepting of the game but still disappointing

So basically, ESRB, all you have to do to get your games Rated E, is to put a bunch of imagery depicting gambling and casino in it right?

The player base of NBA 2k doesn't care about microtransactions? Have you looked at the steam reviews or metacritic at all? The majority of the people who leave reviews say microtransactions are shit. There is the odd person giving it an incredible 10/10 but I'm pretty sure those are corporate accounts giving a review.

Here is the response I got from pegi:

    Dear Sender,

    Thanks for your email.

We have seen the announcement trailer of NBA 2K20 and noticed the controversy it has caused. We feel it is important to carefully explain when certain content is triggering the gambling descriptor in the PEGI system, but also to show when it does not at this moment.
A video game gets the gambling content descriptor if it contains moving images that encourage and/or teach the use of games of chance that are played/carried out as a traditional means of gambling.

We use a help text to clarify this in more detail:
This refers to types of betting or gambling for money that is normally played/carried out in casinos, gambling halls, racetracks. This does not cover games where betting or gambling is simply part of the general storyline. The game must actually teach the player how to gamble or bet and/or encourage the player to want to gamble or bet for money in real life. For example, this will include games that teach the player how to play card games that are usually played for money or how to play the odds in horse racing.

It is important to stress that the controversial imagery played a central role in the trailer, but it may not necessarily do so in the game, which has not yet been released. At this point in time, PEGI can only comment on the trailer that has been made publicly available.
The trailer includes imagery that is generally known from casinos (wheel of fortune, slot machines). Using this sort of mechanic to select an item, or character, or action by chance is not the same as teaching how to gamble for money in a casino. These differences currently prevent us from applying the gambling descriptor. But we are very aware that it may get too close for comfort for some people, and that is part of an internal discussion that PEGI is having for the moment. The games industry is evolving constantly (and rapidly in recent years). As a rating organisation, we need to ensure that these developments are reflected in our classification criteria. We do not base our decisions on the content of a single trailer, but we will properly assess how the rating system (and the video games industry in general) should address these concerns.

    Kind regards,

    PEGI Consumer Affairs

Real world value isnt the focus for the problem of gambling. Weather physical or not the addiction comes from desiring the reward. Yes the games are praying on that idea. To say it cant be classified as gambling because it has no real world value is avoiding the heart of what gambling is and what it aims to achieve. Gambling is a chance system exchange for currancy based to pray on the player's desire to win. The size also doesnt matter but players will be more motivated with bigger rewards. These games are also dangling big rewards in front of the gamers but the chance of actually winning is low so the gamer will have to continue feeding money. Call it what you want but the essential practices for gambling is there.

The funny thing is everyone complaining has never played myteam in a day of their life. The slot machines and ball drops are rewarded after you win a game or put in a locker code, which are FREE. The only micro transactions are buying packs which every sports game has. Y’all are a bunch of 🤡

It's not really shocking that the ESA is going to the mat on gambling mechanics. Literal billions are being made off of exploiting the young and psychologically vulnerable. Capitalism doesn't give a shit about those people, or any kind of morality/ethics. They won't stop until they have all the money in the world. That's why it's on governments to shut this crap down.

I don't see any problem with the "surprise mechanics". As long as it isn't pay to win.
If it means the game doesn't suffer quality and content wise, and it keeps game prices down on our end, let companies keep their loot boxes.
For example, I''ve played GTA V for all the years it has been out without buying a Shark Card l. It's about having self control.

The slot machine doesn’t cost!! It’s a reward for PLAYING THE GAME!!
Opening packs with real money is the only bad part of this game, the slot machine is added rewards for people who play the game instead of paying for it. It’s still a lot better than 2K18
