    ‪Nobody wants to bag out @StephenAtHome for mansplaining the parenthetical rhyming scheme (ex.ABBA) to Gambino and Chance even though it’s so ubiquitous in poetry, folks songs - like the Song of the Earedil - and musicals, it’s literally the name of the band ABBA? This video is problematic on so many levels.

    Gilbert and Sullivan wrote that song in 1879, so wouldn't Tolkien have got it from them? Maybe I misunderstood how he said it.

  • sageofthesky

    I am very impressed, and simultaneously disappointed. I was told Mr. Colbert was a student of Tolkien's works, and well versed in them. Yet he habitually makes mistakes that make it clear his knowledge is quite lacking. There's the famous 'Valar Showdown', where he could not distinguish between the female forms of the Valar (the Valier) and the male (the Valar), and the plural (Valar, Valier) and singular (Vala, or Valie). And here he makes at least two mistakes in reciting the first verse of the Lay of Earendil, which is frankly shameful. For posterity, it goes (and I am writing this from memory):
    "Earendil was a mariner
    that tarried in Arvernien;
    he built a boat of timber felled
    in Nimbrethil to journey in;"
    'boat', not 'ship'. 'journey', not 'sail her', 'that tarried', not 'who tarried'.
    I am not claiming to have encyclopedic knowledge of Tolkien's work; Lord knows I cannot recite the entire Lay of Earendil from memory, to say nothing of longer works such as the Lay of Leithian. Nor am I an expert on Quenya or Sindarin. But these small things, such as gender and plural/singular forms, as well as the first verse, I feel they reveal a lot about the lack in Mr. Colbert's knowledge of Tolkien's works, and offer directions for him to improve himself.
