Not the biggest fan of Jerry Seinfeld but you have to say he’s the only person in this entire series who’s been able to maintain any level of control over Ricky

@Alex L i don\'t think thats true..MOnty Python..pryoretc were the true greats..ricky isn't a real creative and keeps repeating karls jokes..i still lik ehim..he's like an annoying uncle

    • Richard Hooper
Richard Hooper 3 years ago +3

@BSMSG I would certainly not refer to Jerry Seinfeld as 'down-to-Earth'; he has led a very cossetted life, supported at every point. He even says here that he considers him and his peers as above the average person in terms of what they talk about. He is very far removed from anyone with a blue-collar job, whereas Ricky at least has moved in those circles for many years. Plus, your dismissiveness of the left-wing and implied suggestion that wanting to make the world better is wrong is quite alarming.

    • Alex L

Seinfeld is more down-to-Earth, less idealistic and left-wing like Ricky - who seems to want to save the world.

Ugh... so refreshing to hear King Jerry disagree with Ricky. Previous guests just pander to him and let him rant and demand his opinion be heard. Big fan of Ricky and not hating on the format. Kudos to Ricky for booking a higher echelon comedian on his show; probably pay off for his CICGC appearance.

"You're not that good!" was my favourite. (43:41 but Ron sets it up from 43:06) I love all Ricky's stand up specials but he never really acknowledges that Ron and Jerry and a thousand other great comics got good by grinding and honing their act for years while he started out with a huge audience primed to laugh at everything he says. Jerry follows up by referencing a George Carlin bit and Ricky doesn't know what he's talking about. This was still a great listen but I get why people like Jeselnik don't like Ricky talking about stand-up like he's a veteran.

    • mikewozere
      mikewozere 3 years ago +6

Even Ron was like "we're on the Robin Williams thing."
Immediately flipped it to be about himself after a minute or so of Jerry making the point that he was answering the first question Ricky had asked him in 50 minutes.

The only thing preventing Ricky from going full-blown Bono (of U2) is his great sense of humour. But definitely Ricky's Ego seems to be bloating. "Changing the world" - how pompous and gullible.

  • G S
    G S 3 years ago +2

Jerry is right that by continuing to do the same bit for years would undoubtedly make that bit better and more crafted. But what if Hemingway kept re-writing and publishing The Old Man and the Sea every year for ten years, or The Beatles put out The White Album ten different times? They'd undoubtedly be better finished products than the first iterations but that isn't how art works.

    • G S
      G S 3 years ago +1

@mikewozere Very fair point. But doing the same bit for ten years and dressing it up as craftsmanship doesn't make it any less lazy.

    • mikewozere
      mikewozere 3 years ago

Comedy isn't an art-form, it's a craft. You don't put your thing out there for others to interpret, you hone it until you get the exact same response from your audiences at exactly the moments you want.

    • CORNISHDUDE
      CORNISHDUDE 3 years ago +1

ok use the broad 'art' term if you want, fact is stand up comedy is unique in this sense. But up to an unknown and differing point for each Comedian, some guys have been doing the same lazy material for decades but its not evolving. The reason Ricks first 4 or so stand up specials were scrambled messes was the fact he just wrote them then went on tour.

One feels obliged to admit that this particular edition was more interesting than previous ones, even though Mr.Gervais still cannot seem to contain his habit of constantly interrupting the conversation like an over-excited child.
Unfortunate then, that many editions have proved to be a wasteland of interminable sludge. 'tis quite extraordinary really. How has the co-writer of "Extras" overall become such an excruciating bore? Could this possibly be the unfortunate result of prostituting oneself to the ugly, abominable God shaped like a dollar sign?
Indeed, the dullness of previous episodes have reminded me of a mind-numbingly event one attended in Bristol in December 2011, at the Clifton Hall Of Delights, in aid of listening to a speech by Tony Blair!! This dreadful night was attended by such insufferable jokes as Jeff Bezos, Jacob Rees-Mogg, Alan Sugar, John Berkow(& his awful wife), Prince Harry, Barry from Watford, and interestingly Stephen Merchant, who was then suffering from ergophobia, and used to regularly attend such events dressed up in drag with two pumpkins stuffed down his front, referring to himself as Miss Polly Darton! Indeed Stephen approached me during the interval, stating that he'd been drinking too much since his girlfriend had left him for drinking too much! I had to tell him in no uncertain terms that I wasn't in the least bit interested.
Anyway, Blair arrogantly used to begin his speech in French, just to confuse the non Gallic minded people out there, explaining that it is the Dromedary camel which has but one hump, and therefore the sainted Bactrian camel which proceeds to wander across the desert in search of - Ã Travers Des Visions De L'åme Éternelle - which has two.
He proceeded to lecture us with his concerns regarding the Science Of Morality over Evolutionary Biology, and it's ever more required necessity in this post Laurence Stephen Lowry world of Industrial Psychosis. How is it, he pompously asked, that he oftentimes felt the need to give such speeches whilst firmly grasping hold of his Bhagavad Gita?..for was it not the great blue Lord Krishna itself who declared it does not believe in atheists, nor even the concept of time and space, whilst floating upon existential clouds of expression, listening to "7 Rooms Of Gloom" by The Four Tops!? Dear God, what a frightfully bullish evening 'twas! Indeed, upon returning home to one's plush penthouse suite, what could one possibly do, but chop out a few eight inch lines of the finest nostril dust, and watch one's favourite Candy Samples porno DVD? It was, I'm afraid, a most hedonistic and un-dignified end to the night's proceedings!

@Ice Hockey is Pretty Pretty Good An Idiot Abroad was made in the edit, which was largely down to Gervais. They're not just making money off his back, they are the ones producing the whole thing, giving us the end product. The difference in quality and comedy between An Idiot Abroad and The Moaning of Life is testimony to how much Ricky and Steve did on the former. Karl thought he could make just as good a show without them (and, yes, more money), Richard made him think that - they were wrong. They broke a contract and paid the price for being greedy.

@LEW39 the job of the Director is to "direct" every aspect of the production ie how they want the camera to move, getting the best possible performances from the actors etc. It's a lot harder to do when you're in front of the camera and can't see everything thats going on, which is why I was suggesting that Steve probably did the majority of the directing

@Fingaz MC his ego has really got out of hand these days. When you consider that, and admittedly I'm guessing this, Steve probably directed about 70% of the Office, simply because Ricky was in front of the camera rather than behind it. Yet no thank you in the Life on the Road credits, or a mention in 39 episodes of this.

Seinfeld is so wrong about doing the same material over and over. I want the new stuff every time. If I wanna relive something a comedian has done before I'll get the DVD out or watch the clips on TheXvid. Eddie Murphy's Delirious or Raw tours where hilarious and I'd love to see him pick up the Mic again, but if he came back now and did material from is two old tours I'd be really disappointed if turned Netflix on and it was him doing the classics. but if I'd pay'd for tickets and all the other costs of a night out just to see old material I'd probably never go and see that comedian again.

I need to know: is it a british thing, maybe an english thing? This constant: you know what I mean :) Maybe I`m wrong but it feels like I keep hearing it from british comedians all the time.

@John Bevan Cheers John. Couldn't remember if you could/couldn't paste links in YT comments - well done for making the effort. Obviously, we are both ComComPod/Goldsmith devotees like Ricky. I used to live at Cemetery Junction too. Small world.

Did you happen to catch the name of the comedian who Jerry said never wrote anything down or worked on his material and had a terrible life, but he had 20 great minutes?

Considering the amount of clickbait there is on TheXvid, why in the name of fuck wouldn't you put the names of these guests in the title of the video??? Ronnie B is a radio LEGEND and the Seinfeld bloke isn't too bad either. What a mistake.

This was more cringeworthy than the office in places. Had to turn it off. Let people talk ricky, you get Seinfeld on and lecture/bore him.

Just bumped into Stephen Merchant in Bristol nightclub Silva BlazerZ , and he's assured me he's more than happy not taking part in these broadcasts. He states he's currently writing a new show about Muslim Transvestite dwarves taking a visit to Transylvania! A comedy.

wolves76 are you Stephen Merchant ?

    • wolves76
      wolves76 3 years ago +4

@rxp56 I want him to recognise that he co-wrote and directed The Office and Extras. If you watch interviews he has done in the last few years then look at his responses to The Office. Ricky Gervais explicitly refers to that series as his own without ever mentioning his co writer and director. This subsequently presents a false narrative of the past and shows a lack of respect to the person who co-created one of the greatest comedies of all time.

and STEPHEN MERCHANT.......it is beyond awful how he airbrushes them from history
