  • Published on Mar 13, 2019
  • Gav and Dan travel to South Korea to film the Kukkiwon Taekwondo Team’s amazing high flying martial arts combined with gymnastic feats in slow motion. Team members can launch themselves 30 feet into the air smashing wooden boards on their way down. Their spectacular flying, flipping, spinning, twisting, gravity-defying theatrics, showcasing the board smashing is a thrilling spectacle in slow mo.

I would highly recommend EVERYONE visiting Seoul to go watch this. (Tip: Bring proof that you are a TKD student, and you get a good discount)
I had the privilege of watching this myself few months back, in the legendary Kukkiwon no less. Being a TKD Black Belt myself, i was in total awe and amazement. You're looking at the best of the best in terms of TKD practitioners.
They really should market this more, and make it a must watch show for all tourists. What a wonderful showcase of the Korean Martial Arts.

    slayerr4365 Day ago

The acrobatics is very impressive but seeming the wood is pre sliced you literally only need to touch it with zero pressure to make it split in the 3 pre cut sections so that's really not impressive at all lol. Infact early in the video you can see one of the boards bending and about to snap before it was even touched simply from being held.

It doesn't make sense. Can you really hold it still like that (with one hand below) and break it without the planks being prepared before hand? I mean, shouldn't the hand be twisted in the direction of the force applied with the kick?

This showed me how we don’t usually use our minds properly. Just imagine 10 people locked out of somewhere and there’s a 12 foot wall or gate keeping them from retrieving something very important. They probably wouldn’t realize they have everything they need 2 get someone over the wall! Certainly wouldn’t stop these folks! Even if the wall was 20 feet high!

    • Mario Ray Mahardhika
      Mario Ray Mahardhika Day ago

They're not, but they're indeed designed to be easily broken, provided you hit the right spot. They're made with the fiber layers "printed" at the same direction instead of crossing like the boards used for buildings. So as long as you hit right, they will break. OTOH, if you hit wrong, your body part will break. That same direction weakens one part, but strengthens the other.

  • FurIouS

From my younger days of taking Taekwondo lessons i can tell you the boards are scored so they brake a lot easier.

    • Mario Ray Mahardhika
      Mario Ray Mahardhika Day ago

Oh yes those for aerial moves are probably the thinnest as you may not have proper momentum support.

  • Сергей Терещенков

    It's amazing like ninza

  • Constellation D20

The wood they use is easy to split because they kick along the grain but if they did against the grain it would be very difficult for them. So my conclution is Impressive coordination and precision but the wood is not a feat of strength in my opinion, though it is a nice effect to the show.

Attend one training session with them (or the corresponding local respresentative if any exists), it's part of the lesson. They use it to calm their own emotion. Fear, doubt, stuff like that. You don't really think you will always land on foot safely, it could be your head first then a neck break resulting in instant death. Or chest first, or back first, anything that's not safe. Even on foot doesn't always mean safe. It can happen even to the pros.

I love taekwondo! I do it over here in America - it's so cool! I've been hit in the face with flying boards before, it 100% does happen but somehow I feel like it's super rare (I've only had it happen once in years and that was kinda my own fault)
