This needs to be added to the networking unboxing and reviews playlist. I'm thinking of deploying PFSense and wanted to rewatch this to refresh on the cpu features to keep latency down; I couldn't find it. I went back over a year trying to spot it from the thumbnail, searched for "networking" "pfsense" "10Gbit" "Router" "Switch" and probably some other stuff. I only found it when I went to google and searched for "linus tech tips router unboxing".

SFP cards and fiber jumpers are cheap. Especially if you buy in bulk from a cell network deployment contractor, who has an excess of material.
If you have fiber needs in the future, you should look into Fiber Instrument Sales Inc.

Hi Linus, good upgrade, but I was wondering if that switch doesn't deserve something to suit it like a juniper mx104 or mx80 (if you can't afford the 104) or go with a ASR9001 (9006 or 9010 will be a true overkill ) all of the listed ones have enough raw power to keep both connections (internet and exchange connection ) both well fed this router is a freaking joke :) all the mentioned above are all ISP graded and most of them use them :) That is on the router end.... and yeah... you could just bought a Nexus 5k with a couple of fex extensions and job done....

Having CompTIA A+ Certification really means jack. I got it and I literally wasted money on school when I could have just studied the exam book and taken the test. If you are a computer enthusiest it's super easy to get certified, but not really worth it. I didn't get any work due to it and my certification expired in 2016. Ended up going back to college and getting a CompSci degree and now I'm actually making money with a decent job. Just some advice to people looking to get certified, just study the book and take the test. Most of the hardware stuff you probably know already if you are pretty into PC gaming, but the network stuff is what could get you if you're not as experienced with it. Go for it though, always worth it to have more certification, despite my experience.

Linus could actually open up a technology research group
From media to making tech, could totally start into that.... Ideas you need like a 10GB cable splitter between the 2 switches so you can have instant use of the 2nd switch when the other fails without the whole moving cables... then you just need to turn it on or have it wirelessly turn on using a networked power switch.

cmon man, go get yourself some UBNT or Mikrotik router and dont play with "server based/home cooked" routers plz.
as much as it can work good, it's not INTENDED to do so.
In these modern times, mentioned routers have dedicated packet processing,
all are multi-core, have SFP+ ports, several GB of ram and vice versa.

Needing 10G to scrub through RAW Red footage isn't a matter of needing faster throughput. It's a matter of a missing step in your workflow... intermediates (aka "dailies"). All of your RAW footage should go through an ingestion process where it is properly organized/cataloged as well as transcoded into a much more friendly codec (like ProRes or DNxHR/D) for use in the exact situation you described about your writers. Feel free to hit me up if you need help with creating a standardized workflow for you and your team. I also spent 20 years as a network engineer so let me know if you need help with that too.

Great video! I recently got upgraded to 10 Gbit at home from the swedish ISP Bahnhof (50 euros a month ;-) ) . I am pulling 5 Gbit through my pfSense router which consists of some old stuff I found at home, for example a i5 2500k. Iperf between router and PC gives 7-8 Gbit. Speedtest with computer directly to WAN without router gives the same 5 Gbit, so I actually dont believe you need that hardware if you are not running encryption. My biggest problem now is to actually find servers that can handle these speeds so I can try it out. If you read this Linus, do you have any recommendations how to test my speed? Now I downloaded a couple of games through steam and battlenet to be able to test it, but im still not sure if i am maxing it out. and similar websites cannot handle the speed.
