Can’t wait for the video “Why Microsoft Pluton FAILED” in 10 years lol.
days*
Same
"10 ways MS Pluton is just better"
I have to imagine the big push for this is going to be DRM.
@10100rsn No, it is ONLY about DRM. It protects your computer against you. Note the emphasis about protecting against physical attacks. By attack they mean ownership. It protects against ownership of your computer, so you can never own it.
@Alen Asenie What did I just read. That's not true
@Alen Asenie lmfao Linux is not more secure when performing the exact same functions.
Quit lying. It's far far far far far far far less secure. Objectively, factually, undeniably.
No its to lock out other Operating Systems
Now we get a proprietary black box from Microsoft directly embedded into the CPU. Great!
Then again... Intel ME and AMD PSP are... just that, just not made by a company who would have such a big reason to lock people from what they can run.
@JhonnyTheJeccer Same, screw microshit!
Competitive RISC-V processors when? I’m being sincere, because the likes of Spectre and Meltdown should’ve woken people up to such _security-through-obscurity_ BS schemes.
UEFI Secure Boot is another Vendor Lock In "feature".
@SkyyySi They use similar technology in the xbox to prevent people from hacking their consoles to play pirated games.
It's vendor lock in all the way. Using "security" as a Trojan Horse.
So Microsoft wants CPU manufacturers to integrate a component that is only for their OS? Sounds anticompetitive to me
@Dinidu Perera
Platform Secure Boot, which *RESTRICTS* the CPU to be used only on specific brand/model/SKU
@SujiMayne TPM blocks Linux from being installed.
@SujiMayne That's kind of the issue. You are forced to buy a CPU with an integrated product from Microsoft. With Windows you at least have the option to purchase a computer without it. On the other hand, it shouldn't be that much of an actual problem unless it is used to restrict the user in some way.
@SujiMayne all the features of the pluton chip won’t work on linux, only some.
@James Hayhurst EEE
Are CPU manufacturers actually onboard with this idea? It's hard to imagine they trust Microsoft to make such a critical hardware component.
Its also hard to imagine them passing up free money by implementing a feature customers will never know even exists
@ben russ that all depends on the route the industry takes really
CUDA took the MOAR route, wouldn't surprise me if cores did too, especially with chiplets being a thing
Still tho, a hefty CPU from its day and age does stay relevant for a while in the industry we've seen over the past decade-ish, not so much in what we've seen before.
There will probably be a bit of both Id sat
@RoQe yt unless the paradigm shifts from the current "MOAR CORES" to "cores go BRRRRR" I figure it will still be a decently powerful chip on an equally powerful chip set. The mobo alone was 1,000.
It's funny tho RDR2 CPU utilization usually sits at 7-10%
Once it ages out of the AAA I'm planning on turning it into a server
@ben russ if your goal was to run at least basic and today's stuff for a decade, you can easily do that with that amazing chip!
Not sure if in a decade it'll be a triple A capable CPU, but only time will tell
@RoQe yt Ya, im glad I shelled out for a 3975wx, I should be set for a decade.
Aaaaand I'm rooting even more for vValve and linux gaming.
what does this have to do with valve and linux? The chip is going to be on the CPU no matter what OS you run
@pixel fairy Very likely they are, cause as has been said in the video, MS already pulled of DRM on their xbox customers by a similar, so called security chip.
It is intriguing how such companies can label their black box chips as security chips, letting their customers believe, it was about their personal security, while it is not. Lol
The chip is a security chip, but it rather 'secures' the interests of corporations like MS.
Many young nerds don't know about the history of watching videos on the pc, but i remember Microsoft being one of the early promoters of DRM in their proprietary wmv video format, which they tried to push. Luckily that plan did not work out. But it is hard to fight constantly against a corporation that big and powerful with many sheeps as customers feeding it.
Just hope MS games don't require pluton. They own like half the studios. This could be good for indie devs.
"Chip-to-Cloud Security"
Now that's an oxymoron if I've ever heard one.
@Desktopia umm 😂🤣😂🤣 you have NO idea a out banks and bank laws
They are only required to have a small amount of cash on hand the rest they loan (spend) out .. if to many people ask for cash at one time they will refuse you and if there is a bank crash good luck getting ANYTHING back
@Desktopia a bank IS someone elses wallet ... not a lockbox that holds your cash they take YOUR cash and spend it hoping when you want it back they have some on hand
Replace "cloud" with someone elses computer
@Desktopia i have this tingling feeling that they are capable of keeping me from using my machine, remotely even. it just doesnt sit right.
stop throwing russian and chinese softwares, they are different bred to this hardware-require-cloud thingy. i have no idea why you had to bring them to this.
*edit*
i just read your next comment, you did mention microsoft widely used by government. truth to be told, it just them only know or being lobbied to use microsoft. so many system admins had trouble with windows rolling out updates on windows server that breaks an entire critical service. i vividly remember we had to patch up stuff on several dozens of machine when the .Net updates rolling in and stuff start breaking. common folks wont see the fire we had to deal with as its all done at night. and yes, that update was mandatory and labelled for security updates.
Or how to transform the software problems into a hardware ones.
@viniciusfrj
"When people run out of real problems, all of which are solvable, they tend to make absolute problems, which are always impossible to solve"
-Dad when we talked about why it's impossible to solve crime in full.
How to make hard to solve problems impossible to solve
Microsoft in the future: You need a Pluton Chip to install Windows 12
I swear, they will actually implement this.
*You need Windows 12 to use your system
Physical access is physical access.
We have over 4 thousands years of experience in denying physical access.
So why do we have to rely on a chip?!
It isn't like we can't make locks that can actually hinder LPL long enough for security to arrive.
Is just that we don't care to actually do it.
At this point is just DRM, minor annoyance for the intruder, real hindrance for legitimate users.
Physical access here is code for "ownership". It protects against ownership, so you can never truly own your own computer.
and why i dont have choice of not using locks when it is not necessary to my usecase. we are forced to put a lock on ourselves which the lockmaker is somebody that we dont trust.
i can tell you tpm is not necessary. a usb security key just providing the same feature
if you want physical security, put your computer into safe place but not putting your key into the chip. the chip can also be broken down.
worse, because there is no way this wont be defeated with enough time and access to the target machine. | if they dont give dedicated pins to the hardware that means the CPU processes are vulnerable just like firmware based TPM's.
The reason why this works on the Xbox is the Curated software library. Windows doesnt have that. you can exploit windows and people /will/ to create these scenarios.
I still feel these devices are completely intended for backdoor access by MS and other entities. I'm sure also tracking. I don't like it.
Lets be honest, they don't need this for tracking or backdoor, it's already there
This is DRM, and only "secure" for Microsoft. Putting another component in an already complex system is just adding another possible open door for hacking.
@какой-то ребенок в МосквеI hope there is a good way
The two things I see: Not buying a CPU with it or a hacked version of Windows
They could lock Microsoft products to Pluton (that is probably what you are eluding too)
Scary
@Maynne Millena-Millares sorry to say but in the enterprise space, Exchange, skype, Active Directory are still used extensively and they still only run on windows. I hate to admit it, but the products kinda work in tandem with one another quite easily and they play along nicely. But then again, it's not up to me to decide which OS or products are used ;)
For a home environment, sure i run linux on my servers at home.
@Aiman Norazman The bigger mystery is why use Windows for servers? Linux is proven more secure and flexible.
A chip inside of your chip, running a completely separate operating system, that has full read/write access to to your RAM/storage, that can send network packets without the knowledge of the main operating system, that you have no-idea when it is turned on/off, that runs proprietary closed-source code, that is now being updated via Windows updates, that serves the same purpose as the Intel ME and AMD PSP which have had concerning large number of vulnerabilities and that lots of people to believe is NSA backdoors/spyware. The Pluton is an improvement in terms of technology, but it just gives me the spooks and my trust for Microsoft is extremely limited.
Yo, you should check out Intel Management Engine and AMD PSP.
A firmware TPM does NOT run on the CPUs cores. It runs within the ME or PSP for Intel and AMD respectively.
@Stacey Bright exactly, Microsoft just wants to have more control over our computers.
Yeah, Firmware TPM is already what Pluton is trying to be.
Sounds like an e waste generator - This computer will only run windows from xx to xx after that the pluton chip will make it not work. So the general consumer will throw it out while techies will switch to linux. Worse if they lock the system to only run windows as well.
@Legatelaurie pretty much. I wish more people would discuss the E-waste aspect of things like this, since regardless of security concerns, people don’t need to upgrade computers as often as they used to. If you require whole new hardware to run a marginally better OS, isn’t that egregiously wasteful?
system locked cpu's and always online encryption chips, it's almost like you don't actually own what you buy anymore, everything has remote bricking functions just in case you have the audacity to try use it past it's allotted service/ support life.
Windows 12 will almost certainly require Pluton 2
I get pissed off when i update my pc and it downloads an app without my consent, now we can have these people on a hardware level? Awesome!
I wonder if it will be rebooting the PC after each update.

And Im on linux and will then have a fucking Microsoft chip inside my CPU that cant even be disabled. And Microsoft is shipping the updates? How?
anyone else think this is just a way to build backdoors into anything without windows?
No
No, it’s also a backdoor into Windows as well.
@Dinidu Perera I still use a system with 2013 CPU. It predates PSP/IME
@Skywayz Zarthic or just throttle the performance of any OS other than Windows so people stop complaining about how slow Windows is.
@Skywayz Zarthic Trying to defeat linux users is like trying to tell the devil no
This is sci-fi level stuff where one company tries to conquer the world in a stealthy way and such. No thanks.
@Sullen Secret that could be caused by all kinds of things to be fair. Currently running Win 8, 10 and Kubuntu from the same drive, nothing going wrong.
And for some reason, even the Win 7 from another drive which had it's own MBR due to it coming from my old laptop works. It's slow as fuck, but I at least didn't lose any data.
So, in short, in such cases I can't help but assume an user error, or just a failed/corrupted installation.
If Microsoft goes through with this, and manufacturers agree with it, it's gonna be a different story, and a completely different approach at troubleshooting the issue.
"Tries to conquer the world"
They already did that. Not a single OS is as widespread as Windows is. Talking about computers here, Windows phone was a joke.
They are trying something with this, possibly limiting both manufacturers AND customers, but by all means, it's completely unnecessary.
Most people use Windows because it's easy already, and don't want to put in the effort to learn Linux.
@Sullen Secret All of them.
@WorldTravel1518 - How many people know that Linux exists? How many realize what Windows is as they are using it?
@hubertnnn There are a lot more desktops than servers. And almost everyone I know with a Mac either has Windows installed in some way or has a seperate Windows PC.
First they introduced Secure Boot & made it impossible to run Linux or other OS with Secure Boot enabled. Now they want to lock down the CPU at hardware level & we won't be able to disable it. Yeah..... I think I know where this is going.
The weakest link in IT security is STILL the human at the desk. If someone has physical access to your systems then you have WAY bigger problems than a TPM module.
@Can a swallow swallow? might do it lol
@Freya McMahon ...wanna click it?
"Idiot proofing something only makes a bigger idiot" - i forgot who
"We trust them - they made Vista".
Someone forgot Windows ME. 😬💥
The system that restarted itself all the time!
And 8.
Vista was ahead of it's time tho.
Also made Windows 10...
Also they made Windows 11. I certainly didn't forget about that one.
I can imagine Microsoft bricking the TPM module on the CPU.
How can an always online/ cloud based encryption engine even work unless it gives the cpu internet access pre boot?
I wonder how Linux can work with
I want my computer to do ONLY things that I allow IT not the other way around…
Well if you haven't noticed in recent decades, the big push is for you to not own your computer or anything else, you are effectively just a lease holder agreeing to whatever restrictions the companies can get away placing on you, and the list of restriction grows longer and longer, its why every piece of software is a service now, that you have to keep paying for and can just be taken away from you when the store shuts down or they decide to not support it anymore so you can start paying for the newer version twice the price. There are still people that know what freedom looks like, but by the way they normalize it in younger generations, in few decades the norm will be for everything to be like that, cars, houses, travel. If theres no pushback, they will keep encroaching, thats what corporatism is all about.
If you get hacked it won't be doing what you tell it to anyway so I suppose it is a no win situation
Welcome to planet Earth. I see you're new here. Enjoy your stay. By the way you can't leave. We own you now.
Have a nice day.
That's what that MShit company doesn't get.
Linux was one of the things I thought about when they said Microsoft will be responsible for updating Pluton.
And what if there would be a major security issue with these chips? Would you even be able to turn them off? Or does Microsoft use it's market dominance to hang some iron balls and chains to your CPU's ankles (even you never wanted to run windows like on servers).

@Killertruth186 I'm not by any point here saying Linux is perfect, it's not, even by a long shot, but at many things Linux is far better, personally, my main reason for my main rig to live on Windows is the shit DRM and anticheat engines that interfere with what I want to play, watch and listen to. There's a huge reason why there are more and more people every year that go full on selfhosting, if I could afford it, I'd probably join them as well, because we can't afford to trust the big companies to do the right thing when historically they have almost never done it
@Killertruth186 well you can begin by reading ToS/EULA, then you can go over network data sent by windows to MS... Do you really live on a different planet?
@Killertruth186 You have clearly made up your mind about this topic, but yes Microsoft is filtering off your data under windows 10 / 11 to build a profile on you to encourage you to click advertisement or for them to sell you more products.
Where do you think the telemetry data is stored and your Windows account you use to log into Windows 11?
Also check telemetry and the data it collects / run a packet sniffer like glass wire and watch it light up with microsoft servers, Although typing this is ofc pointless. No one admits they're wrong ever. Have to keep that pride in tact right ?
What are the chances that MS will break its security before its even been implemented in 0.0001% of systems

Lenovo locking cpu's to motherboards and now this, big brother total control over what you do and what you have.
All in the name of forced obsolescence,
planned obsolescence is too hit and miss, sometimes people just shrug off the latest "innovations" once they realise they would be worse off.
gone are the days when the customer demand determined/drove the market, now we get what we are given (or made to subscribe too) you can be sure as hell remote soft bricking will be far easier going forwards.
Apple's probably like "I know right? Isn't it great!"
Funny how the "concerns" are just like 15 seconds of the video, even though it's already announced OEMs are going to start using TPMs and this BS to push HW locked to their ecosystem. This is not acceptable. It's stupid to think this has anything to do with privacy or security and not just more DRM.
Microsoft quality? No thanks. That is how we got things like the RRoD.
And things like windows 11 ;)
But what if I DO NOT want more -spyware- cough! -DRM- cough! security in my computer?
Amazing, now we can all have os-locked cpus ! Just what we needed microsoft, thank you.
(I know it probably wont be the case, just joking on MC's obsession on tpm/security chips)

I wouldn't doubt it though, with Microsoft's record of the last couple years where almost every update broke and bricked systems.
Yah i'm not going to trust any cpu that has microsoft in charge of keys to encryption lol
@Alexander Pavel I just hope they only get on laptop chips (where it makes at least some sense)
So no more AMD and Intel CPUs after this year? AMD's mobile Ryzen 6000 chips already have it
if this goes much further I'm getting RISC-V with Linux and hiding in a cave for the rest of my life
@D34DB34T Sorry, that is what i meant by having a specific machine. Something dead simple and reliable like a cheap old-school cellphone that people could rely on, then you just have to start a trend.
Let's maybe just give it slightly better I/O than the old Nokia.
I totally agree that OP-SEC elitism is incredibly stupid/dangerous/inefficient
@Anne ☥紘☽ In order to combat the cooling effect, secure and anonymous communication needs to be easy and convenient. Having to go through all those steps every time one wants to use the internet securely will prevent 99.9 % of people from ever doing it and then the few people that do get painted as heinous criminals.
Tbh I really think we should build extra secure low tech open source machines for all serious internet an telecommunications activities and keep the spyware filled entertainment machines for use only as entertainment only. And probably keep them in a soundproof black faraday caged box the rest of the day.
So a company, unable to make a secure OS for almost 40 years, tries to make a security chip. What could go wrong?
@Raxcental Ruthenta Microsoft shouldn't force anything, especially with "security" improvements like this that have actual security as the lowest priority.
@0M9H4X Yeah, closed ecosystems for the people! Hurray, we got a solution for security issues!
@prawny12009 Upgrading to Win11 wasn't recommended.. who is using Win 11 and liking it, btw?
the xbox one is pretty damn secure and it's been out for 9 years now
I read it as "Microsoft Pollution" at first, thinking Microsoft was finally going the way of Captain Planet villain.
Considering all the e-waste it'll produce when future versions of Windows (or other essential software) start requiring it, you're not wrong.

Bill Gate is planning to build Thorium Nuclear Reactors in Wyoming, and has not said how the waste will be processed, and stored, so yeah they ain't far off.
Great now microsoft will make us serve ourselves in a silver plate for gov , hackers , and corporations .
Microsoft sure is one for true innovation, they've now invented spyware baked directly on the hardware. NICE!
@Fast and Steady I already don't, but if the fucking thing is baked into the hardware it literally doesn't matter.
@David s. Intel beat them actually. Look up Intel ME.
Already exists
Lol
All bets are off with physical access. I don't see that as a vulnerability. I'd rather have a hardware TPM versus nvram TPM.
MS is BEGGING for a class action. People are already purchasing new PC that are supposedly Windows 11 compliant.
@Parritz we're in the middle of a global chip shortage, so...

@Parritz hi lol
Stuff like this just makes attackers more determined. Look up the Starlet security processor in the Wii. That didn't stop anyone and neither will this.
@Bishop There might not be one YET. It takes time. It could happen today, tomorrow, in a year, in ten years? Who knows. But Im sure it will happen. Even for some older consoles it took years before there was non destructive exploit aka not drilling chips for Wii etc,...
Well Xbox One has a pluton chip. Where is the jailbreak?
It sounds like a way to lock computers to windows.
Glad they brought up Linux support, that's all I was thinking about.
Holy shit! Microsoft had found the ancient weapon Pluton and is getting ready to take on the world government 😳
@DeteminedExterminator SUUUUUUUUUUUPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!.
Microsoft should be wary of any semi nude cyborgs nearby. They say he'll burn the schematics of pluton if he finds them XD
@Sam Wallace It's a One Piece reference (anime).
How dare you make me think of this! I need to chain an Xbox SOC to a Vivi figure now lmao
More Microsoft spyware, next we won't be able to use unsigned apps!
Also let's see the NSA buy CPUs without this chip like they did with Intel management engine.
The tpm works fine as it is unless your a company that has the threat of on site atacks.
and this doesnt save them from that either. | the reason why this hasnt been defeated on Xbox is the software library is curated. Nearly all attacks targeting security chips require exploiting vulnerabilities in the underlying OS. Microsoft removed any way to do that on the Xbox.
This doesnt mean its secure from "Physical Access" people have gotten physical access to the chip to dump data, etc. The problem is there is no way to load unsigned software making it pointless.
Wow, this could revolutionize the way microsoft spying on us, nice.
@GHOST LEGIT muh games kek
This isn't for spying. It's a way to lock PCs like Apple does with T1 and T2 "security chip"
@Ltex They wouldn't on what?
@Ltex ok?
@Killertruth186 they wouldnt
Microsoft issuing firmware updates? Given their track history with "updates" they could well end up bricking your mobo or cpu.
Wait a second. Did he say we'll be getting hardware chips on future Intel and AMD CPUs? Are we seriously going to have to waste precious die space for THIS?!?
I think this is a fruitless effort. There will always be some to crack it. The more worrisome situation is that it will force people down another necessity of proprietary hardware. Which also creates a situation where they can force you down a path of selective hardware if company a or b doest pay them. Its theft of private property at that point.
Also, you forgot Win 8 wasnt great either. Its why Win 10 brought back the start menu and stopped pretending to be a tablet.
That is the whole point of computers, they can basically be programmed to do anything.

Intel Management Engine: prepare for trouble!
This "TPM replacement" chip that totally won't be used for spying: make it double!
I keep hearing this but no one actually points to any evidence that this is physically possible based on what we know about Pluton
Just the other day i was thinking since MS bought activision, that they would soon be building gpus and cpus to dominate the market
I won't even consider a CPU with Microsoft firmware in it until they make Windows at least as stable and secure as your typical Linux distribution. You can bet the hackers will be running custom firmware on Pluton within a few weeks of its release.
@ben russ I had forgot to mention it was on laptop. Also I had seen a form with users trying to ask for help and only get asshole like response.
@Killertruth186 just curious when did you try to run Linux.
Also, I would never recommend Arch to a noob, that is a cliff of a learning curve. Gnome has been going downhill since 2016 as well, which is why I don't recommend Ubuntu, unless you're willing to install another desktop environment.
The three best distros to start out on are:
Pop_OS (Cosmos desktop environment)
Mint (cinnamon desktop environment)
Manjaro (KDE plasma environment)
Both pop and mint are Ubuntu based and Manjaro is arch based.
@Killertruth186 not true, the first 3 months of using Linux I never opened the terminal. It is very distro dependent. The only reason guides like to reference terminal is that terminal is (largely) distro agnostic.
@Parritz Have you looked at System 76 or similar?
No. Just no. Rather than have more broken Microsoft nonsense embedded in the hardware, open standard solutions are the only ones I'll ever trust. I'd rather have a TPM 3 or some successor out there that addresses the issues. The solution isn't more locked down proprietary nonsense from a company with a proven track record of taking control away from the end user. I will run my older hardware into the ground before I upgrade to anything newer that has a proprietary chip in it from Microsoft.
@gwgux amd is the first to implement pluton lmao
@Brandon Allen It'll depend more on where the money is in the end. If it's more profitable to take the unpopular route, they'll do it. I hope AMD resists it and turns it into a marketing strategy against that kind of nonsense, but we'll see.
I really hope AMD sees how unpopular this is, as for Intel or Apple? this inter-corporate circle jerking is definitely something I can see them doing.

Microsoft: YOU NEED TPM!!!
Also Microsoft: Let's bring Microsoft spyware to the hardware layer!
I did upgrade work for a major hospital system, we enabled TPM 2.0 all of them. So if it is that easily defeated? Great. So much for protecting medical data.
I still don't trust Microsoft.
@Motoryzen If the hospital's management software is written for Windows then Linux is not an option.
@Motoryzen Linux is an operating system, not a system platform. Any user assuming linux is the end all be all of security isn't practicing safe methods.
Linux is only as secure as the user allows it to be, which more often than not is very insecure, and yes, I do use Linux.
I do not delude myself into thinking that my OS is secure, as it is a minority and there is little incentive to attack me over Windows users.
Linux hacks and attacks take place in the server space, and nearly every successful hack is a successful breach of a Linux system, because users and IT staff had bad practices and failed to *make* Linux secure.
The security of your hardware platform is highly important as it is the catch-all when users do dumb things, this is why the Xbox One still isn't running Windows 10 for the funnies.
Nobody has cracked Pluton yet, despite Xbox users being some of the least informed users, and the Xbox itself being the target of many a researcher attempting to reverse engineer it to make it function outside of its base uses.
Your network structure and security is 100x more important than per system vulnerabilities, because short of entering the building and plugging in, you've got to get through the network.
And if you do plug in, you've still got to get through the network with login info and hope you're not airgapped.
Almost everything has weaknesses when it comes to technology. As someone who works in technology I would expect you to understand that.
I'm also wondering what the hell Microsoft would go about shutting down their computer remotely for you're worrying about
Tpm doesn't do jack shit but let Microshit try to control more of the end users pc.. period.
It's bs.marketing
If you want a secure is platform... obviously Linus based is the true resolution and answer.
I wonder if the Pluton firmware updates will be roped into Microsoft's "Patch Tuesday"
No way in hell I'd trust Microsoft not to screw Linux users over with this.
@sleepykitteh as a [put any distro here] this concerns me.
Well, I hope apple is good for something and forces this anticompetitive behavior out, since this one can affect them directly
@ben russ that is the point, if the programs are not compatible then there is a problem, if I can't use them with a dedicated gpu, if it is not available for any laptop, then there is a problem
@Alen Asenie There actually is a Chinese CPU mfg company that is making their own chips. They are ARM only tho.
@Commodorefan64 As an Arch Linux user this concerns me.
@TR United States v. Microsoft Corp. Case of 2001?
A TPM from MicroShit will have TWICE the vulnerabilities for twice the price ! Value !!!
Great to see more innovation coming from Microsoft, they are really pushing it these days 💪
So to sum up, they're going to make it "required" to have this in the name of security, and charge us more for it so that in the near future hackers can figure out how to bypass it anyway. Got it.
@hubertnnn they're going to add what $10 to their CPUs? Come on
@Matthew Lozy Except its not microsoft that will be upcharging for this, but Intel annd AMD, since its them that will have to put extra work into adding that crap into the CPU..
And last time I checked neither of the companies earn anything from your personal data.
@Varian Rhesa they've never tried to do that. Every security feature they implement works in Linux... Even this one
@Varian Rhesa It literally works on Linux.
Or, they trying to lock Computers to only run windows
I love when companies build spying hardware right in the CPU! Now I can be always spied on!
"We trust Microsoft" Yeah sure hit me more with that telemetry while you're at it.
Hey - Vista was really good, sadly the whole change of API and fumbling by device driver's by some manufacturers (graphics cards being one) gave it a bad name.
Besides, Win7, 8.. was just Vista with a service pack.
Me and Sheldon agree. almost, Open BSD baby ;0.
As a Linux user for over a decade, I love watching Windows vs Users, it's like comedy knowing that people just sign up for more abuse over and over again!
Just as we hoped that we might finally be able to replace completely closed x86 processors with somewhat open ARM and fully open souce RISC-V in future processors. Microsoft wants to turn existing PCs into nothing but an Xbox which can run spreadsheets.
So pluton will be the way that Microsoft will lock down the os when they transition to the subscription service just a thought
Back when Trusted computed was first introduced. It was supposed to restrict what could run on your computer. It was suppose to keep any software that was not approved and signed by Microsoft from running on your computer.
Original Xbox was a test bed for it and that worked out so well. Forgot how long it took for someone to hack it and install Linux on the xbox. I think is was something like 48 hours after the xbox went on sell.
Microsoft has been trying to gain control of the computer market since then. I will not use windows 11 because of the requirement of running TPM.
What happens if your system bricks itself ether though hardware breaking or bios corruption. You just cannot move your drive to another computer and recover your data, unless you have a backup that is not locked with TPM your are screwed.
How long before the only way to backup is though Microsoft's backup services because any other backup is encrypted and locked to your computer.
@Cool win It's a tool, you are free to use it or not use it. Computers are doing just fine with or without using it. It depends on the use case. You're wildly exaggerating for no apparent reason.
TPM is the worst thing that happened to computers.
Encrypting your data is a choice, regardless of the TPM version you have. If you don't enable encryption services, you can still do all the local backups you want and even if your entire computer were to break, you can take the drive to another PC and it'll work as normal.
@WorldTravel1518 So TPM 1.6 still locks your data down.
@Robert Peeler Did you read what I said? I only have a TPM 1.6 chip, not a TPM 2 chip.
Do I really want to trust my data to the company that brought us UPnP? :/
"Chip-to-Cloud Security" means NOW you won't be able to tell what Microsoft snatched from your PC even if you ran a MITM proxy. Neat.
Taking my A+ course right now, and I don't think TPM's were covered at all in the course, thank you for making a video on them so I can remember for those questions!
So even after switching to linux, in a few years I'm going to have to either look for a cpu without pluton, or live with yet another Microsoft back door into my systems.
Like i said before... FCK Microsoft, im changing to Linux!
Lenovo is the first manufacturer to implement this, but it will be turned off by default in firmware settings.
What if I run Linux for sole reason of not having M$ products on my pc? Thanks, now my dreams will be plagued with horrors of future, where I can't by CPU without M$ sniffing device in it.
The TPM listening can be guarded against via pin. The tpm first requires a pin to send the keys, bitlocker supports this mode but its a bit hidden.
"We, Microsoft, after 30 years of investment, see ourselves completely unable to even think in perspective of ever being able to deliver software without security holes. So we've given up and are now forcing a chip on you that you don't know, that none of you wanted, and that you'll have to trust from now on. Just take our word for it that we would never ever not deliver NSA backdoors or anything. We are the good guys here!1!! This is all for security! (Just like all the NSA programs by the way).
What, you guys want an opt out? Nah, there isn't. We put the shit directly into the CPU. So that you have as little choice as possible, we put it directly on Intel, AMD and Qualcomm. HAHAHA!!! THERE IS NOT MUCH ELSE LEFT HAHAHAHA!!! YOU CAN BUY FROM APPLE HAHAHAHA!!!"
_In the background think of a Bill Gates petting a fat long haired cat._
Great. This'll definitely help my system and not be an unnecessary backdoor and DRM that will be as easily exploited as tpm.
Microsoft just shouldn't be allowed to make/require these.
1:07 That is a Saleae Logic device. It is a logic analyzer. It is a great product. 10/10, would recommend. Looks like Logic Pro units are going for about $1k
Love how people are saying that MS will have too much control over you PC with this move, but the same argument was not made when Apple switched to M1 chips....
Double standards
What are the performance implications of using part of the chip's dye (die?) for non computational operations?
1:20
Windows has so many vulnerabilities to an attacker with physical access, why does this one require Microsoft to make a new proprietary chip?
Wait a WiFi chip on CPU?? That is interesting... And concerning.
Could you guys please make a video about eye tracking and foveated rendering. It looks like these technologies will be finally coming to the VR consumer market this year.
Congrats on 4m guys, keep them coming
Nice! Now everyone has to rely on Microsoft for their security-needs. That's what I wanted when I went away from windows... Now I should trust a company that sometimes fails to deliver the correct drivers for a mainstream! graphics card, to update stuff at the hardware level. Thanks for that.
Microsoft making everything "safe, private and connected" again. I'm heading out (to Linux)
4:26 I would imagine Vista running on a mid-2000s PC with a silver and black tower and a flat panel monitor, not a 90s PC
Microsoft knows what's best for me just like Apple knows what's best for their users.
Will that acknowledge Linux or exclude it from properly working on that processor? Like how they screw over Linux during dual boot if the user don't install things in a proper sequence (damn!)
Vista was pure gold compared to 11.
I Have TPM 2.0 (even according to MS tool) yet I still can't upgrade due to my CPU *model* 7700K "not being supported".
Luckily I'm happy so far that I can't, from what I've seen on my laptop, it's an unpolished turd.
"Thank you for keeping me secure Microsoft!" - said nobody.
For those of us that had to slog through the trenches of Windows ME, Vista really wasn't all that bad, :p
to me, this looks like a rehash of the "Clipper chips" from waaaay back in the 80's. it says its a security feature, but will most probably provide a back door to those who know what they're doing.
When you can't make a secure OS so you make security hardware instead
Sooo now we have to check if the chip we are buying have this M$ thing or all chips will have it?
I already can imagine chips with special letter like 'KFM' means can overclock no graphic and no spyware on chip 😁
So, are "discrete" TPM chips more secure (defeat only with physical access) versus "firmware" TPM (defeat with Platypus malware)? Who developed Platypus and RAPL, sounds physics complicated?
You should do a retrospective on Win Vista, which comes to the conclusion that, hey it's pretty good...oh wait a minute Linus already did that.
This isn't for spying. It's a way to lock PCs like Apple does with T1 and T2 "security chip"
Is it similar to what Apple did with their security on a chip?
So basically Microsoft doesn't only want Software control over your PC, but also Hardware control.
Cool, remind me why anyone would want that?
Shower thoughts...
1) Microsoft cant deliver enough pluton security chips to CPU manufacturers, increasing time to market and costs.
2) CPU manufacturers create identical CPU models with different pluton versions, invalidating old CPU stock, confusing the market and stopping 2nd hand sales of Identical CHIPS with older pluton versions.
3) Future windows versions will require re-purchasing of third-party applications that relie on new pluton features that the new O/S supports. (ever tried to get an old app working on the latest frequent iOS update? )
4) Copyright agenda through hardware enforced DRM, across media (both live and recorded), software, networking.
5) Laying the groundwork for 'software as a service'.
From what I heard in the video, thought 1 is a non-issue. Pluton will not be a separate chip, but rather part of the CPU design that gets etched onto the silicon along with the X86-64 cores, cache, etc.
Nothing about this is a new concept. Just new to PCs. Macs have had the T2 chip embedded on their motherboards for years. It works for Macs because Apple is able to control everything from software to hardware to (now) the CPU itself. PC hardware is much harder to implement because of the wide range of hardware manufacturers. Going to be interested to see how this is all rolled out.
