If you think that the movie is horribe, then don't even try the actual game. It's even farther from the books then the "movie" is. I'm not going to say that the books were perfect, but it was a good series and they definitely could have done a hell of a better job on a movie adaptation.

"Someone really tried to make this film. A lot of effort went into it!"
What if I told you the princess is an elf? Or the raiders during the sparring/training with Jeremy Irons were large, horned beast-men? Or that a key character was killed off in the film?

I don’t know what I’m more insulted by
Accelerating the growth of the dragon, skipping all that character development.
Reducing Eragon and Saphira’s relationship, which is genuinely interesting in the book, to just him looking at her and her spouting exposition
The Ra’Zac going from these almost Eldritch threats to a pair of mooks who are killed off unceremoniously
Arya. Just Arya. Like you couldn’t GET more night and day than the book and movie interpretations of Arya.
Or Saphira having FEATHERS instead of DRAGON WINGS!

  • Andrew Mason

    ...Critic. That’s a real language.
Well sort of. The author of the book used words from an English to Old Norse dictionary to create the language, but structured them the same as you would an English sentence. So while the language is made up, the words are Old Norse.
So technically, that is a real language you’re making fun of. Silly sounding or not.

I hate this movie. Look, I'm not here to pretend that Erogan was an original story, of course it wasn't but that didn't mean it wasn't good. It had a lot of heart and personality. I tore into these books because while there wasn't anything special about it the story was still special to me as a child. Hell they're still pretty damn good. This movie used a deep love that myself and a lot of other people had for this story and instead of a heart felt adaptation by a team that cared about the books we get a boring copy and paste coming of age fantasy story. It was like the writers and directors were angry they were working on this movie, maybe they had a teenager or older child who was obsessed and wouldn't stop talking about it and decided to take their pretentious revenge on their child so when they see the movie their parent can go "See, I told you it was a generic and unoriginal and unspecial story." by ripping out anything that we loved about it. Jokes on them, they had an army of angry nerds and geeks at their back because of it and we all know how annoying and loud that can be.

Critic makes a lot of solid points (I can admit it despite really liking it as a kid), but the bit with Arya calling out to Eragon in the dream, I was always under the impression that the dream was caused by Durza, not that Arya was trying to ask Eragon for help but trying to hide her pain... What did I miss? And the movie totally botched Murtagh :/ Hedlund played him well, but the direction was a super poor interpretation of who Murtagh was and what he did.

The armors of The Guardians of GaHo'ole are more impressive than what Saphira wears; it was only helmets and mechanicals claws with tiny swords and knives. It still more amazing than what she got! Heck, even the ones in How to Train your Dragons are better.

Some interesting differences between book and movie: In the Book, there are no random evil guards in the Palancar Valley. Roran is trying to marry a girl in town, and apprentices to a blacksmith to make the money he needs to get her father to agree to the union. Our main hero loves the stories told by Brom, who is NOT a broken down drunk, but instead, the town's most respected storyteller. Eragon loves his stories, but he really doesn't dream too much about the outside world. He also does quite a bit of hunting in the books to show off his skills with a bow and stealth. They in fact stay in the Valley long enough to bury Eragon's adoptive father, as well let him heal up, I mean, and that's all just in the opening minutes of the movie, to say nothing of the whole characters and subplots they chucked in a bin from the beginning.

Red Wyvern Emperor 20 days ago

Yup, here we have Eragon, overall not too bad fantasy movie. Let's be honest, there are MUCH worse. It's fine for a Saturday evening.
And then... we have much greater books they can make a movie out of, but do not do it, because... reasons. There is an entire universe of Dragonriders of Pern, from Anne McCaffrey. Riders talk to their dragons via telepathic link. Characters are memorable, universe is vast and well thought up. Story is A-grade, consisting of both sci-fi and fantasy combined and well balanced. As we read, we feel the despair our main characters feel, as global threat stands before them and they are the only ones to face it. Outnumbered, outsourced, yet they fight.
But instead... they make a movie from a book with a very generic plot. And they didn't even do other books from this series. I'm not saying they were bad or anything, but the story is exactly what you would expect from a medieval fantasy drama. But to make it justice, books were pretty well-written as well, easy to read. It was certainly entertaining for the target age category.

Actually Jadis the White Wich was never friends Aslan, she was freed from a spell she put on the world (which revealed she was a traitor to her old world) by the man who owned the mansion and the wardrobe... it’s too much to explain it all, just read The Magician’s Nephew. Point is, Jadis isn’t in “that old friend become main villain cliche”. Does it do anything? No. But I don’t make content, so I might as well be a TheXvid commenter.

Removing Saphira’s voice does make sense, and having Eragon repeat what she said when necessary would have made the scenes more powerful, but sadly her body movements and expressions don’t actually convey what we need to fully understand her thoughts. The scene with the sword, her backwards movement and slight lowering of her stance could show her either being afraid of it because it’s killed many dragons or because she thought it was destroyed but seeing it she is now confused and wonders what they’ll do with it. If she growled and hissed and physically showed anger or fear of the sword that would work much better at actually showing she hates that sword for killing more than just Brom’s dragon

  • beeziebubs
    beeziebubs Month ago

Even with her voice removed, she lacks so much emotion and personality. Every time we pan to her, it’s the same blank expression.
In how to train your dragon, each dragon had a basic personality established, and you could at least tell what emotion they were feeling.
Sapphira looks like she’d be more interested in a brick wall

Nice review, Critic! :) I completely agree. The main problem this movie has is it's rushed storytelling and generic treatment of characters who are much more complex in the original story. This is one of those cases where unless you had read the book, you would have no idea wtf was going on. They really should have followed the book more closely. The best book-to-movie adaptations ARE the ones that follow the book to the T. Case in point: The green mile, interview with the vampire, pet cemetery ( The original not the new remake) the diary of anne frank, the lord of the rings get it. :p
