Valery Legasov Audiotapes (CC) - Tape 1 Part 1 - Recorded in English

  • Published on Jul 25, 2019
  • The following piece of audio is a self-made recording in English, based on the original Russian transcripts from the recorded tapes of Valery Legasov. This is Tape no. 1, part 1.

No edits have been made to the original text, but of course the meaning of some words might be altered from their original language.

A bit of context for those who don't know who Legasov was:
One year after the world's worst manmade disaster - the Chernobyl nuclear explosion, Valery Legasov, Russia's top scientist, was found dead in his apartment on April 27, 1988.

He allegedly committed suicide. Even though there was no suicide note, he left a series of recorded tapes detailing how disillusioned he had become of the government which attempted to suppress key details of the Chernobyl disaster. His recordings revealed crucial undisclosed facts about the catastrophe.

When I saw that the audio was in English rather than Legasov’s voice with subtitles, I was prepared to be disappointed. But this is actually really nice to listen to. I forgot it was a translation for a moment. Would love to hear more!

After watching the HBO miniseries I was really curious about what Legasov recorded on those tapes and I'm really happy to have found this :D

Thank you so much for these I've been wanting to hear his actual account of what happened I've been fascinated by Chernobyl since I was like 15. My uncle is married to a woman who was born there and lived in Pripyat as a child and she used to tell stories about it all. On the morning of the accident they opened the amusement park and she said she remembers seeing reactor 4 from the top of the ferris wheel.

From time to time, extraordinary people appear at extraordinary moments and risk enormous consequences for the Truth and for what is noble and right. These few, these courageous change agents, may hazard everything to ... save a dour old world. I believe Valery Legasov was such a person. I feel indebted to him (and all of the Liquidators). Be at peace now. Your watch is done.

As someone who would struggle with patience trying to fully absorb subtitles....this is amazing.
