  • Google Stadia is here. Stadia marks Google's entry into AAA gaming via a new game streaming service. Google says you'll be able to stream game titles up to 4K 60fps on your smartphone, tablet, laptop or TV (via Chromecast). Is Google Stadia the future of video games? Are you ready for a completely online gaming experience?

This type of service has been around for a long time on PS4. But the seemingly non existent input lag would be most prevalent on racing simulations. I'd like to know the difference in ms and what difference it actually makes when braking or changing direction mid corner.

Nvidia shield have done the whole streaming game service well so far in my experience, at times a little laggy when Internet falls now and again but majority of time works very well. So I think its definitely the future streaming on any device, making gaming so accessible. I think Google might have a few niggles to start but may just crack the gaming market before xbox and Microsoft cloud. But eventually this is the future of gaming folks, instant, accessible, high resolution and frame rate games at your finger tips.

Give me a switch or playstation anyday where you can put actual games in and play instantly without worrying about internet connection. Stadia is doomed for failure that's my prediction it will be Google's biggest flop after Google glass.

I wish google made a console like the Xbox but feels like warm when you pick up the controller, not unlike the PS4 which is straight out of the year 3000, and the console could play both PS4 and Xbox games, and maybe backwards combatibal with retro games like sonic and pokemon.

even if you have a gigabit internet connection if your ping with the server is like 100ms you're still fucked. imagine playing a fps with a mouse and it takes a tenth of a second every time you move/shoot. Doubt they can fix that, its going to be more of a casual gamers thing.

xcloud: entire xbox library, built by microsoft who have been in the industry for decades
stadia: 30ish games, built by a company who's biggest contribution to gaming so far is the chrome dinosaur
Both companies have immense server infrastructure, google with GCP Microsoft with Azure.
I know what I would be getting.
    (It's actually neither :p)

It's bad enough when my local games have to phone into a server to play locally. Now every game, even single player ones, rely on both my internet connection and the cloud servers (which go down *all* *the* *time*) being up? And let's assume they figure out the technology issues really really well. Do you want to take bets on how much "ownership" you will have? When your subscription ends, no more games in your library. Or how about investing a whole lot into the technology and then Google decides to end the service? Or maybe just stop streaming games older than 5 years old? How's that Ultraviolet subscription working out for you?

If they do not allow downloading for at least the first few years, it will not be scalable enough to be successful. Ask OnLive. While average internet speeds are increasing all the time and hardcore gamers and technophiles will already have more than adequate speeds to support gameplay, the vast majority of the public still does not. That means lag, glitches, picture quality drops, connection drops, etc.

At least initially, they have to offer download capability and storage capacity on their primary television-based devices. Offer a less-expensive purely streaming set-top box for those with high enough internet speeds and make that distinction clear in the marketing. Bank off of the idea of a Netflix for video games and the ability to play on television, computer, tablet, and phone.

Another problem is, how playable will major console and PC titles be on an interface as small as a phone? Phones are getting bigger, but it's still problematic at the moment. So is the idea of on-screen controllers that limit visibility and are not as easy to use effectively.

Don't get me wrong. I think there is a lot of potential here and I hope they stick with it, but there are still some major concerns to address up front. Hopefully, they will have the resources and determination to power through them.
