Generation Wealth - Official Trailer | Amazon Studios

  • Lauren Greenfield’s postcard from the edge of the American Empire captures a portrait of a materialistic, workaholic, image-obsessed culture. Simultaneously autobiographical and historical essay, the film bears witness to the global boom-bust economy, the corrupted American Dream, and the personal costs of late stage capitalism, narcissism, and greed.

    About Generation Wealth:
For the past 25 years acclaimed photographer and filmmaker Lauren Greenfield (The Queen of Versailles, Thin, kids+money, #likeagirl) has travelled the world, documenting with ethnographic precision and an artist’s sensitivity a vast range of cultural movements and moments. Yet, after so much seeking and searching, she realized that much of her work pointed at one uniting phenomenon: wealth culture. With her new film, Generation Wealth, she puts the pieces of her life’s work together for in an incendiary investigation into the pathologies that have created the richest society the world has ever seen. Spanning consumerism, beauty, gender, body commodification, aging and more, Greenfield has created a comprehensive cautionary tale about a culture heading straight for the cliff’s edge. Generation Wealth, simultaneously a deeply personal journey, rigorous historical essay, and raucously entertaining expose, bears witness to the global boom-bust economy, the corrupted American Dream and the human costs of capitalism, narcissism and greed.

This was so sad and pathetic. Surprising that Lauren Greenwood spent 25 years on this and is as clueless in the end. How can people be this vacuous? People in this doc drama commit criminal behavior, prostitute themselves, and abandon their children. Why have them if you were just going to run around the world? Greenwood even shreds her mother, then is shredded by her son for being so self-serving and clueless. Don't waste your time watching this.

Such a stupid documentary. Generalizing an entire nation off of a small subset of people, and characterizing an entire generation. Not to mention painting all wealthy people the same.

This makes me happy that live on a island where I produce my own food and harvest food from the sea with my family and friends close by and whenever I feel like having fun I take my boat to the big city have my fun then go back home. Growing marijuana is legal so most of the time people just chill there's no dangerous drugs cause the island is too isolated and far out at sea. I'm not rich just lucky my ancestors settled in the right place I guess

The Reagan administration lit the fuse to this whole disgusting phenomenon. The Trump administration has accelerated us along the ultimate path to destruction. America is running on fumes when it comes to the gas tank of real values, replaced by a preposterous, phony sense of religious values masquerading as "family values" - which are covering up the hypocrisy of an overwhelming greed & desire for instantaneous wealth.

  • Monika Ambroziak

I would never understand why people want spend so much money. I have a good paid job and I am saving as much as I can (80% of it) to retire in my late 30s. If I stay in my career till 60yo, I could become really, really rich (last year I got 3 promotions and I can see getting a Director role in 10-15 years), but I just want spend my time as I want (backpacking, learning languages or hiking).
Recently I won a Brand Challenge at my company, which mean I can reimburse spending a huge amount (fixed amount) of money on brand goods within 3 months. Those were my most stressful days... I would go to Prada, LV or Chanel and just think, why anyone would buy those bags... most of them are so ugly (especially Chanel and LV) and I could not imagine myself walking around with such crude item with vulgar and big logo... In the end I bought myself work suits and shoes. But the most of the money I spent on items which could be an investment and I could sell as they do not lose worth.

Every generation was greedy and obsessed with wealth. That why we have come so far. That's how capitalism works. Always more and never enough. Its a two edged sword. Its the reason why we have a higher standard of living, modern technology and medicine but it's also the root of all evil. Every small and big crime is in the end commuted bc of it. Either bc of greed for money or power or both. Now we are starting to see the vital flaws of this system as the meritocracy begins to kill people and makes them depressed
