I like razors takes on most things but saying legalisation of marijuana in the states is directly tied to the escalation in Mexican gang violence is a big stretch. Saying that gangs are multi-varied black market operations really doesn’t cut it (as it doesn’t explain escalation only continuation). As for the argument for all drug legalisation, think of it this way: If you remove all drug revenue from the cartels where are they going to get their money from? What other sources of revenue have as much demand as controlled substances, I’d genuinely like to know what razor thinks cartels would be doing on the same scale if they couldn’t sell drugs? I think he mentioned stolen goods and auto parts but come on, the profit margins/cost benefit ratios on those goods are pitiful compared to trafficking of controlled substances.

Given how SJW parts of this game were back then, just now seeing through the sheen of awesomeness this still exudes, I may just go for a more Renegade approach next play-through. Been too long and I miss the aspects of this game Bioware shat upon. Still will try for a three game play-through on the other games, even though they can't hold a candle to the original. Also, were there any mods made to make 2 & 3 more like the first game? If so where would an enterprising soul find them?

I liked ME3, but it's amazing how poorly it has aged compared to the previous Mass Effect games. But yeah, definitely better Andromeda, then again that's not a hard thing to accomplish.

This was always my favourite area in the whole game. Snow settings alone are great but here everything was so atmsopheric, the different hubs with their own contained quests, the need to transition from one outpost to another in the blistering snow, it’s the best area of the game by far

You're aware games just can't keep going forever, right? At least with stories and unique places like a AAA title? If you want a giant Sim that never ends and has nothing in it, go play one. How is a game bad if it isn't the thing you want it to be? Especially when it's marketed to be exactly what it is. Space opera, 3rd person, RPG.

56:42 the video you're referring to is probably Max Derrat. He's a good dude,, but I think he has the blinders on for MGS2 and Kojima in general. While I really like MGS and the story, I don't have any allegiance to the creators or writers, etc. I like the games, loved the mechanics of number 4 (needed way more gameplay tbh), but I don't worship the creators.

2:05:00 anyone but ash? not even on a femshep run.
I loved chatting with the crew, even accidentally flagged the blueberry (like that’s hard) and had to let her down by openly declaring preference for ash in a trite cutscene. But something about the warrior poet chick compels me. Even managed to stay out of “trouble” in ME 2 because even the character-reduced-randomly-angry ash was more interesting than the Aussie with the low camera angle smile.

1:42:00 seconded. The green Asari should have been a party member. She has better writing than the braindead blank that is Liaria within these 5 minutes than the blueberry burst tentacled one did until half way into the second game.
A waste of a good narrative hook, especially silly with how she is already a recurring character (if you allow it).

29:00 I forgot how precious a gift that the Mako truly was, powerhouse weaponry accurate to absurd ranges with enough ability to dodge and explore that it reduced the need to schlep everywhere on foot.
Every other game HEAVILY nerfs their vehicles to force you to engage on foot.
In mass effect they just provided us with a non trivial array of point-defences and ship based drop-squads to deal with during the traverse.

    • RaSkipper
      RaSkipper 3 months ago +1

@MrSaywutnow agreed about Andromeda, only ME game I've played without wanting to play it again.
ME3 has flaws, sure. Screwing up the Rachnai, Ashley becoming a bimbo, etc. But the story is beautiful. The big stuff like reconciling the Quarians and Geth, down to the little scenes like shooting with Garrus on the Citadel. It just needed to show how choices mattered during the Earth battle and end with the Crucible firing without getting the blue brat involved. Shepherd passes out after hitting the button, that should've been it

    • MrSaywutnow
      MrSaywutnow 4 months ago +1

@RaSkipper And I can (sometimes) forgive a bad story if the gameplay is good.

    • Suodemon
      Suodemon 4 months ago +3

I'd say ranking the ME games in order of release is pretty accurate. The main issue with 2 was that it didn't have a plot that couldn't be cut out completely and lose nothing. Characters were awesome, but the plot in 2 was a complete holding pattern for 3.

    • Caleb Imrie
Caleb Imrie 4 months ago +1

@The Therapist Productions the worlds were empty and didn't sing alien. They all looked generic. Gunplay was objectively worse than 2. It was a tad faster but far less consistent. Hit detection issues out the ass. It also became the primary driver of combat. Abilities could and were near useless on insane, I could walk through that game with an AR and all of two abilities being used occasionally. Next to no side missions that weren't "multi-player" maps, ton less dialogue. The list goes on forever. 2 was a step down and a sign of things to come, its still not awful and beats the hell out of ME3.

The question would make more sense if bioware EVER made awesome games. They never did. Go back through their catalogue, from recycled plots to recycled gameplay loops, bioware never made something awesome. What they always were was mediocrity done right. A bit like what spiders is slowly morphing into. They had a formula, they had a style, it wasn’t anything spectacular or mind-blowing narrative wise (obsidian was that-away for that back in the day), but it was done right. It was polished. And it filled a desperately ignored market niche while being on the vanguard of the “edgy violence and sex sells” wave with the original DA, a bit like GoT was for TV series.
Then they got famous. And they got a shitload of cash. And got rid of most of the original people in the studio. And started thinking they are some hot-shot artists and genius visionaries with delusions of changing the world and teaching compassion and tolerance through their majestic deep and intricate works filled with bitting and intellectual social commentary! And thus we got ME 3, Snorequisition and Pandromeda. To be soon joined by DA 4: the rise of tolerance if press interviews are to be believed.
It’s the cycle of game studios. It’s why I no longer hold any loyalty to studio, but just to creator, if even that. Spoilers to the obsidian fans and the CDPR fans out there: it’s happening to them as well. Not only is it inevitable, but the signs are already there and the trajectory the studios are on mimics bioware so well it’s a bit sad actually. CDPR in particular, as they are falling into delusions far sooner than one would expect, but again, gamers have nobody to blame but themselves when they crowned witcher 3 as the 2nd coming of RPG and gaming Jesus.
As for obsidian ... let’s see: kicked out one of it’s founders and greater artistic talents and visionaries in the form of avellone, got bought by major publisher and turned into in-house bitches, started going full AAA cringe with marketing for outer worlds, followed by slap in the face epic exclusivity ... obsidian, thy name is bioware 2.0, and much like the original, your fall from paradise has begun.
Much as I find Yahtzee to have devolved into a cringe-fest after pussy took over his life and he moved to the mental illness called commiefornia, he is correct in one thing: gaming IS the industry where nobody ever learns anything from their mistakes or their history. Neither developers, nor gamers. It is what it is, make peace with that, become aware of the cycle and cash out your investment while the studio/developer is still in ascent and hasn’t yet had too much of their own farts to sniff. Else you become yet another of the endless drones of idiots collectively referred to by many names, from the cult of kojima, to biotards to the abused spouses blizzard entertainment calls fans.

@Caleb Imrie "Plot was thoroughly pointless in the grand scheme of things" This right here was the biggest problem with ME2, and it made the ME3 story even more ridiculous.

    • Caleb Imrie
Caleb Imrie 4 months ago +2

@webkilla Lots of good characters and neat stuff happening, little to go on game wise. Exploration was practically cut, populated places seemed more full but less interactive. Felt like a lot less dialogue. Combat itself was a massive step back to Gears of War instead of diving a little deeper into what was there in ME1. Just wasn't the direction they were headed, totally different tone. Plot was thoroughly pointless in the grand scheme of things, plus tons of annoying retcons. It isn't a bad game but it's flaws stand out. ME1 can get a pass on a lot of things purely because of budget. Practically the same team with more money and they made a product that was a step back in every area Mass Effect 1 was doing well in.

    • Simon Payne

Well said. The first was special and unique. The second was repackaged and pushed out with too much COD influence. The real loss being the music which changed from this amazing spacey vibe to something far more generic.
