Honestly, as a life long Cowboys fan. This was all on the Cowboys. They shot themselves in the foot on multiple occasions. A good team wouldn’t even be in this position in the first place. Hats off to the 49ers. They did what they had to do to win, even with players getting injured.
I appreciate your comment. Dallas got themselves into a horrible situation and lost the game. That is really what happened.
I'm not even a Cowboys fan, but the end of the game was cringeworthy. - My opinion: The NFL needs a "spike" call/motion for a team that operates like a timeout that allows a team to lose a down, lose 3 seconds and gives them a new play clock once the ball is set almost like an incomplete pass.
So it if would have been 1st and 10, with 9 seconds left, it would be 2nd and 10 with 6 seconds left on the play clock if the team called for the "spike".
Can only be used on 1-3rd downs.
Teams can only use it after the 2 minute warning.
Will be good for teams, the refs, the NFL, and ultimately fans.

How did they get screwed?
@roobear26 it was largely due to the ref not being where he was supposed to be during the play. after carefully analyzing what happened after the play, knowing where that ref should have been and watching over a dozen similar game ending plays, that ref was 15 yards further away from any other play i watched. i researched the time it would take an average human to run 15 yards which is how far from the play the ref should have been according to the refs rule book. after considering everything including prescots mistake in not handing the ball to the ref there still easily would have been roughly 4 seconds left on the clock.

2 games just ended with crazy results based on the last 14 seconds- one game with no ref and spiking the ball (Rams) and the other with the use of time outs (KC) and neither looked as sloppy as Ramon George’s ref game

Great analysis except there was one major thing that wasn’t discussed. Dak started his slide at the 26, which means the ball should’ve been spotted at the 26. The correct thing to do for the ref was to grab the ball and move it to the 26 and make the entire line move back behind the 26. Instead the ref illegally did the cowboys a huge favor and spotted it at the 24. If anyone could complain about the refs on this play it’s the 49ers.

Idk, that Saints loss to Vikings 2018 was the most unusual defensive stupidity of a play I've ever witnessed in my 30 years watching. This was a head scratcher as well. If the Coordinator called the play, then he is def Head Coach material.

the ref was not where he was supposed to be though, per the rule book that position is to be 15 yards behind the play. that ref at the end of the play was 30 yards behind the play, had he been following the play correctly even with the flub by the cowboys there would have been plenty of time for one last play.
@Wan An Dun The ref likely anticipated a hail mary pass, in which case Dak would be running around in the backfield and getting chased. That is likely why the ref started so far back. Trick plays don't just fool the defense. The guy had to run probably 30 yards to get to the spot...possibly 15 yards after Dak was down. Getting there, spotting it properly, getting away, snapping, and spiking is not an easy task to do in under 10 seconds.

Cowboy fans should look at how painful an alternative ending could’ve been. Dak throws the game-tying TD, leaving kicker Zuerlein to win the game with the x-tra point, but, as would be true to form for him, misses it, sending the game to OT, and Dallas loses. THAT would’ve been much more difficult to swallow. But face it, Dallas...ya feasted on weak teams (the NFC East) all season, and got waxed at home by mediocre teams all season. It just wasn’t meant to be.

Unfortunately, you're right. It's going to take a lot of structural changes and several years of hard work before the Cowboys can be a real threat. Sad...but true.
Keep in mind that Dak is down when he first starts to slide. The ball should have been spotted at the 25 yard line. Dallas gave themselves in extra yard. This is why the Ref picked up the ball and placed it back. Dak messed up big time.
They beat Giants 40 -24, beat Falcon 43 - 3, beat Washington 56 - 14, last week Eagles 51 - 26 , Karma babies, today they lost, play that I would expect a 70million paid quarterback would have the knowledge. San Francisco handed you the ball to win the game, you couldn’t even do that. Cowboys always disappoint. You have failed us once again.

100 percent agree. Refs tried everything they could. I think running that play was the problem. Theoretically it could be good you get closer but there are just too many things that can go wrong. And things went wrong.
If Dak has the presence of mind to find the ref and give him the ball, he probably has a chance at one more play.
Refs did an awesome job! by squeezing between the line of scrimmage he save Dallas about 3 seconds.

If you look at where the side judge is the umpire was even willing to give them an extra 2 yards and not bring the ball back to where it should have been spotted, which would have definitely ended the game
How did they get screwed? Why run the ball with no timeout remaining? That was too risky. I'd rather just lose throwing a Hail Mary.

Another issue is that when the official moved the ball back, it looked like 1 or 2 of the Cowboys didn't scoot back enough to avoid being offsides. So the officials could have called offsides on the offense, resulting in an automatic 10-second run-off, ending the game. Anyway, it was a very strange ending...the 49ers couldn't quite put the game out of reach, and the Cowboys couldn't quite take advantage. Great year for the NFL...so many close games, surprising upsets, and last-second wins throughout the season!
Actually the umpire tried to help the cowboys. Dak started his slide at the 26 yard line so that is where the ball should have been placed. The center was on the 23 and umpire spotted the ball at the 24. The umpire should have pushed the offense back another 2 yards and time would definitely have expired.
@Chris lnFlorida If the runner is giving himself up the rule is that the runner is down where he starts his slide, not where he lands.
If u re-watch which I did many times, the ball actually hit on the 24 yard line when he slid.
Yeah, you can see the sideline ref mark it at about the 25 and then move over to the 24 after the ref just randomly spots it. The refs gave them as much leeway as possible and they had time to run a play instead of spiking it.

None of what happened at the end really matters. Dallas should not have been in that position in the first place. They made far far too many mistakes. It was an embarrassment really.

What I'm taking from this game is that the last 5 minutes took about an hour to play and it was mostly just penalty filled, bad football from both teams.
It was sloppy.
Coaching has to take some responsibility for so many clutch penalties and more than a couple of dubious play calls. In the eighteenth game of the season, even losing teams should be better disciplined. You have to believe that big time playof game sare more emotionally draining than regular season games.

Take a look at 2:22; the side ref is clearly marking the spot the ball should have been placed which is almost a full 2 yards behind where the center/Dak attempted to snap it from. I think the ref placing the ball was a bit frazzled by the situation or he would have definitely been placing it even further back. As soon as the ref places the ball you can see the side ref quickly adjust his own placement so that they chain gang knows where to setup.
Even though Dak slid to the 22 yard line, the ball is placed where the slide is initiated. Cowboys out there clowning.
Which brings up a question. Would that play been reviewed on the bad spot by the cowboy center. The ref should have placed the ball back two yards and the clock wouldn't have been a problem. It would have been zero.
Didn't really notice that until you pointed it out and your absolutely right ball should be placed at least 2 if not 3 yards back at the beginning of his slide not the end.

Things Dallas could have done to give themselves a chance at the end zone:
1. Just take a shot at the end zone where you're at.
2. Give the ref the ball and give him a lane to spot the ball.
3. Don't run that far down field with only 14 seconds left.

looks like the 49ers had 3 on the d line and 6 players on the sideline. shouldve ran a deep middle screen play or a late delayed qb draw down the middle with extra blockers. believe parcells or belichik ran that play with the patriots some time ago. the difference here is the 9ers were bigger and more physical than the cowboys and there was not a lot of good down field blocking this game

JUST reading an article before watching this I was under the impression the ref ran into dak as I didn't watch the game. But watching this review yea that's all Dallas...
I am a longtime Dallas Cowboys fan and this loss is 100% Cowboys fault! The reason why is the Cowboys should have played at the level to win the game from the start. Dak was inconsistent in his accuracy and the undisciplined play causing penalties. Dam this team as another disappointing season!

They only difference there and hear was the response of the ref. He actually followed the play as it developed when the Falcons and Football Team played. This guy in Dallas did not.

We’ve seen this so many times throughout the years in the NFL. Less than intelligent players like to get tackled or slide down In the middle of the field with seconds remaining on the clock. They got exactly what they deserved
If you look at the referees on the sideline at the top and bottom of the picture (for example at 2:11 of this video) they have the ball marked down at the 25. The umpire should have moved the entire offensive line back a couple of yards. Instead he places the ball on the 24 and the two sideline referees move up a yard to match where he placed the ball. That seems odd.
You can't blame the ref when you run up the middle with 14 seconds left. Dallas didn't push the ball downfield all game.

I like the call as a call - an end zone shot from the 25 is a much better prospect than an end zone shot from the 40. I just hate the execution, and if you can't execute a big brain play perfectly then you probably shouldn't be running it at all. To run a QB draw with 14 seconds you have to have every detail worked out and the whole team has to have drilled it until they can't forget it, right down to where they have to stand to give the ref access. And I think you have to have a second play already called, just in case you don't have time to spike it. This looks like something they only ran a dozen times in practice so they all have to think to remember all the details, and when you're under time pressure thinking and remembering are hard.
Good thing about playoffs football, is that one team have to win, and the other team has to lose.
Some hearts will be broken sooner than later, but in the end many hearts will be hurting, because there's only one that will hold up the super bowl trophy. May the best team win.

Dallas Prescott held into the ball running it to long. He should have ran 10 then slide that extra 5 yards burned the clock more! The REF MUST SPOT THE BALL! DALLAS SCREWED THEMSELVES!

@John Doe Dak being trash or not being trash has nothing to do with it. He didn't call the play. The play was to run up the middle of an empty field. The defense gave them exactly what they wanted. So he ran it. Like the play or not, Dak didn't just decide to run the ball. But hey, you want to hate, nothing I'm going to say is going to stop you. Have fun. Funny thing is, I would agree that Dak is one of the bigger reasons the offense has struggled lately.

Jimmy G even tried numerous times in the 4th to help Dallas out....this game should not have even been close. That being said, Dallas had numerous dumb penalties. Being that undisciplined starts at the top.

The home scoreboard gave the Cowboys 2 extra seconds too. Go back and look. The clock was at 40 seconds on the Niners 4th and 1 QB sneak. When the Cowboys took over, the clock was at 40 seconds, magically went back in time 2 seconds.
Cowboys fucked up so much that as a fan i was surprised we stayed only 6 points within tying the game up.

The ref did as good a job as he could. He ran and even barged through the line to get in position. It was an awful call because there was no room for even 1 second of error. What if he had more room to run before getting tackled? He would have taken more time leaving less for the snap. 19 or 20 seconds maybe.
No he didn't. This same ref was on the field in Green Bay when they played San Fran earlier. Rogers had 37 seconds to go and passed to Addams for 20 yards. On that play, this Umpire moved 20 yards in 10 seconds to get near Addams to get the ball. Twenty. Ten seconds. 2.5 seconds for every five yards, right? NOW, in Dallas, the play went for 15 yards. Dak slides with 9 seconds on the clock at about the 17 yard mark. The ref never goes that far because Dallas is moving and lining up. The Umpire, same guy from Green Bay, doesn't get to the Dallas backfield until 4 seconds is left on the clock. That's 15 yard in 10 seconds. So, he makes it 20 yards in Green Bay, but only 15 in Dallas in the same time frame? NOw, how could this happen? Well, look at your overhead shot of the play. When Dak slides, do you see the official? No? Why? Because he's still on the other side of midfield, almost THIRTY YARDS away. Why? Had he broken with the same urgency that he showed in Green Bay, 2.5 seconds every 5 yards, he gets to the Dallas line of scrimmage with about 7 seconds to go. That way, he doesn't run into Dak and almost knock him over.
You say it was an awful call? ATL and Matt Ryan did the same thing last year in their game against the WFT. With 21 ticks on the clock, Ryan ran for 17 yards. If you find that video, you'll see the Umpire actually starting to trail the play as Ryan runs up field. Ryan ran further than Dak and after a few seconds, you see the Umpire getting the ball and trying to set it. WFT tackle Payne knocks the ball out of the refs hands and almost causes the time to run out, but the Birds spike it with a second to go. You see them complain to the refs afterward.
I'm sorry, the Umpire in that Dallas game costed them a delay of game after the fake punt and he was slow getting to the ball on the last play.

So much this. It was painful to watch the last 5 minutes. It felt like it took forever, penalties all over the place, random time outs, lots of measuring where the ball landed and problems trying to figure out the clock - the whole thing was awful.
That referee is a perfect example of an affirmative action hire.
I think you’re description of the last few seconds are correct. And with that little amount of time remaining the DC should have gone long. Not a QB run. That was a time killer.
The Cowboys’ fans and players need that “we got screwed by the referee” narrative to cover for the fact that Dak Prescott chose to run with 14 seconds left then handed the ball to the center instead of the referee, in short an extremely boneheaded play.
That @B draw was a called play, not a scramble after scanning downfield for receivers and finding none. I couldn’t believe it the moment I saw him pull the ball down and take off. That’s what caused it all. What if he had gained 10-15 more yards before being tackled? There would have been only six seconds on the clock.

What gets me about this if you discredit all of the penalties on Dallas (14), Daks horrible playing, a lucky pick by Dallas Defense to get them in reach of winning. Dallas Cowboy fans really assumed if they had enough time left that they were going to get a 30 yard (give or take) touchdown?!

What’s missing from this video, is where the linesman have spotted the progress, that the referees job is to spot it there, and that the Cowboys are lined up 2-3 yard offsides. The play can not be run, and the clock cannot stop just because the offense is not lined up at the spot of the the ball.
They had probably practiced this play many times and had the timing down to the second...except for the part about the ref needing to spike the ball...I can easily imagine them timing this play without taking the ref into account.
I was shocked and also pleased when I saw Dak take off and run.

I feel bad for Dak eversince his owner didn't believe he was worth paying him what he got, but this mistake falls squarely on Dak for not giving the zebra the ball. But you can't blame Dak for the loss. It was a team that gave itself NO CHANCE to win with so many dumb and undisciplined penalties.

And you can definitely blame dak for this loss. The guy missed wide open guys alot, ignored wide open guys alot. Threw an int on a short pass on 2nd and 20 something. Then runs the clock out and blocks the ref from touching the ball.
Cowboys, as a team and more specifically, Dak Prescott, have very little DISCIPLINE and/or knowledge of the rules, or lack of presence of mind to know the situation. Ref/Umpire MUST touch the football to set the ball. Prescott was even in the way of the ref, who was trying to get to the ball to set it. Cowboys committed fourteen penalties in the game, a team record. No discipline. And Jones is paying Prescott to be his franchise QB?
The 2 weakest links on the Cowboys are apparent: McCarthy and Prescott.

Well I just heard Mike McCarthy say they practice this play every Friday and Saturday. So if that's the case then should've known that you have to let the referee spot the ball before you can snap it, but it's obvious they didn't know. Smh
the ref was still at the 50 yard line when the play was done and had 9 seconds left. it took him 5 seconds to even get to the play....that being said it was a bad call to risk the game on a run down mid.

@Johm wick the only mistake the ref made was NOT moving the ball back amost 2 yards, which actually gave the cowboys a huge benefit (watch the side judge at the top of the screen-standing where the ball should be placed-he steps forward more than a yard away from where the ball should be spotted after the ref spots the ball). If the ref actually spotted the ball correctly it would have taken the cowboys even longer to get in place and spike. Game over. Anyone with much football knowledge would know this is squarely on the cowboys’ poor choices and execution.
@Johm wick I think what you are saying is once the ref moved the ball back the entire Dallas O-line was offsides. And actually the ball should have been spotted 2 yards back. The ref bent over backwards to give Dallas a chance on that play and very nearly screwed the 49ers over. It was a bad play call AND it was poorly executed. The fact that Dak blamed the refs for this loss has made me lose all the respect I used to have for him.
