Hello. I've recently been watching your videos, I saw that you've Forged Damascus patterns a few times. In your videos I thought that you said you used 1080 for the black pattern and I thought maybe you said 15n20 for the white steel but I had never heard of that. And online there is a lot of 5160 used. And apparently things called w1 and w2. Now being very new to this I was wondering if you could explain it like I was a child lol. Kinda dumb it down for me and clear things up a bit. Thanks.

Nothing we call Damascus is actually Damascus. It's really just pattern welded. Real Damascus was actually a huge mystery until just a few years ago. It's a fascinating story, actually.

What kind of acid do you use to etch the metal so you can see the pattern?

    • NoOne Here
      NoOne Here 4 months ago

It's ferric chloride Hexahydrate, an acid used for etching metal surfaces. The two types of metal he uses to obtain the damascus reacts differently to the etch, (i don't remember which one does what, he used 1080 and 15N20) one of them gets darker and shows better the pattern.
The 1080 is the one that gets darker.

What is that salt like substance that he sprinkles on at 1:28

    • NoOne Here
      NoOne Here 4 months ago

It's borax. It prevents the two sides of the metal from oxidizing and scaling. It's important to get one solid piece of metal without cracks.

Just discovered Alec a little while ago and have been watching a lot of the old vids. When he got burned it reminded me a lot of last summer when I was working in a chem lab bending small-ish pieces of glass for an upcoming experiment, and dropped a piece, not taking the time to think "hmmn, maybe trying to catch red hot glass with my bare fingers (which I did, like a dumbass) would be a bad time."

Technical applications: Intradermal needles and other very stiff pins, bolts, nails, Rotating shafts. Rolled from sheets, wouldn't break that easy and would be extra stiff. Also you might be able to build a propeller hub by X-twisting shackles together, very thin but torque proof.
The one you made seems to take high pressure forces linearly?
