I'm not here to hold your hand
    I'm just here to understand
If you're feeling low I can help
    I'm always on your side
    Forever near your light
    I'm always on your side
    However you must fight
    Within your darkest night
    I'm always on your side
Lover as lonely as lanterns lost
    Show me faith's real cost
    I'm always on your side
    Forever near your light
    I'm always on your side
    Wherever you must fight
    Within the darkest night
    I'm always on your side
They won't rush you from me
    'Cause here I'll always be
    I'm always on your side
    Forever near your light
I'm not here to hold you down
I'm not here to love you when
Your stars align and you let me and your heart win
    I'm always on your side
    Forever near your light
    I'm always on your side
    Lover, teach me sweet command
    Show me where I land
    I'm always on your side
    I'm always on your side
    Forever near your light
    I'm always on your side
    However you must fight
    Within your darkest night
    I'm always on your side
    With evidence of trust
    And eminence of love
    I'm always on your side
    Capitulate and fade
    Resurrect and break
    I'm always on your side
    Forever near your light
    I'm always on your side
    Lover, light the way

Reminds me of the material from Billy's solo album (Future Embrace).
I always liked that album more than most, so this is cool to see he has retained some of that album's sounds and brought it in to the fold of the band's repertoire.
One of my favs from Oceania.

I recently went to their show last month & the same thing happen. Most of the fans gave more reaction to their old stuffs compare to the new 1. I personally love some of their new tracks, but I don't think there's a need for a long instrumental piece. 1 of the fans was dumb enough to throw a can to the stage & I can clearly see the unpleasant look in Corgan face. At the end of the show, there's no encore performance at all, even though their setlist that time include 1979 track as an encore.

the SPs had just been a band I'd always heard of and had a few songs but never really got into. I hear Panopticon a couple weeks ago and I like it...I start listening to more and more from Zeitgeist up to now and I feel like I've been living under a rock. always thought SD was their best work but they just don't stop getting better! I literally feel in love with this melody the second I heard it. just added the SP to my list of favorite bands

Sad but understandable. I went myself to one of their concert. It was the first time and probably the last time I would see them. I wanted the old stuff. Like everyone else in the crowd. Songs from Mellon Collie, or Siamese Dream. The essence of the Pumpkins, the reason I love them so much.
And I'm definitely not a "bad" fan.

The point is: W/ D'Arcy, Chamberlin, etc. Is one Phase of the AWESOME SP. This is a new phase... they're together. Like one life whose link between middle age and 18 is so differnt yet the same person... All who were there benefit in the moment: before and forward. Corgan is just doing what he knows...and its awesome. I've been a fan of him and the band since the 90s. If you don't do something that makes your fans uncomfortable...then it's not art.

The Pumpkins should make at least one song for the Wachowskis' adaptation of "The Diamond Age" ...That would be a perfect match. With Clark (Warp Records "Future Daniel" thrown in, Autechre "chatter") --this is some of the best rock and roll ever made. Amazingly beautiful. I'd love to see this be the music Nell listens to as she grows up... ...as we all grow into the coming Diamond Age of high intelligence and perfect prediction.

I actually like their newer "shit". I like their old too. Perhaps it's because I am a fan of a lot of synth pop bands. It's simply a transition, I think Billy is showing he's not afraid to try something new. I call it courageous for a band to test new waters. Just my 2 cents, call me crazy if you want.... All I know is I've had their album in my CD player and had it playing nonstop for 5 months. lol

  • 1banana2kiwis
    1banana2kiwis 5 years ago

New SP isn't as popluar as the old because we don't live in the 90's?? I get what you are trying to say, but I think kind of silly too. If Gish and SD were released today they'd be bigger albums then their last 2 would be back then. No disrespect, just disagree. There were a ton of alt bands that failed back then, a ton. It all comes to quality, and quality brings demand. If we forget about era's for second, and we should. The earlier SP shit kills the newer shit. All good... just different good

2/2 The new SP material isn't seen in a light of nostalgia like the 90's stuff, which is a huge part of the popularity. But then again, popularity doesn't mean anything. It's the music that counts and Oceania is great. Just my opinion.

  • Jeroen Bakker
    Jeroen Bakker 5 years ago

First of all: Adore is my favorite Pumpkin album. That's just a matter of taste. Jimmy is an amazing drummer, but Mike really isn't inferior to him. Have you seen him live? He is fantastic! I think the reason why the new Pumpkins stuff isn't as popular as the older material is the fact that we don't live in the 90's. Don't forget that these were the years of alternative music, a perfect climate for a band like SP. Right now we live in a time ruled by social media and Facebook likes. 1/2

  • thefirstpumpkin

2nd part. if isn't this true, why Billy don't have the same success? Why Thefutureembrace was unsuccessful, if Billy was solo ? don't you get it! they got it 'cause they was a good band, don't have to write in every song for have talent. sometimes, inspire, have good feeling, mediate, or give support, it is equally important than write the song, sorry if i don't write this well, i don't know english at all and i don't care

  • thefirstpumpkin
    thefirstpumpkin 5 years ago

tThe Smashing Pumpkins were great when D'arcy, james and jimmy were members, Adore without jimmy wasn't good enough, the machinas without d'arcy wasn'yt good enough neither, Zeitgeist without james and d'arcy wasn't good. This, only with Billy is just a good album for any artist, but not for The Smashing Pumpkins, maybe james and D'arcy weren't a key piece, but Jimmy? The Fifth Best drummer in the world was a key piece of the sound and success,

I went to a concert for this, and the fans were all really hating on him. All they wanted was the old "metal" music. So Billy Corgan when up to the mike and said these words: "Listen here. First we're gonna do the new shit. Then we're gonna do the old shit. Got it?" I laughed so hard. I almost feel bad for them. Whenever they try to artistic stuff, the bad fans get mad. :(

freddie mercury is dead. all the original sp members are alive and well. i don't know how they feel about it or if they even care, but your comparison doesn't really work. i don't know the foo fighters history either, but is dave the only original member? even if there were two people i'd be more comfortable. but billy is literally the only person here from the band. so i agree wholeheartedly with ichiro. . . this sounds good, but calling it sp is a stab to my highschool heart.

the Pumpkins were always the Corgan's vision. he did most the writing and controlled most aspects of the music. you can even listen to a lot of his demos and see how much they match up to the Pumpkin's songs. the only other member of who was anywhere near as important was Jimmy Chamberlin. that man is one talented drummer. but even he said, it's no real secret this is Corgan's baby. i miss Jimmy but this was always Billy's band. why change the name? he's still writing music.

As much as I respect Billy as a musician, he is a control freak. Even though he played 90% of the old studio recordings, you can't deny that jimmy, darcy n james had an influence on the sound and structure of the songs, not to mention the live shows. At the moment Billy is surrounded by a bunch of yes men, they're too afraid to speak up against the bands direction. In my opinion Billy should have put the lid on the pumpkins after Machina, and instead focus on projects like Zwan

  • Matilda Manila

I think what happened was that Billy transcended into something more mature and soulful. This is why the album sounds this way. The Past is always different from the Present. Without difference, no growth would manifest.
