- In this video I build a small off grid cabin in the remote woods of the upper Midwest. If you've ever wanted o build a cabin in the woods...this is one way to do it.
Howto & Style
Hands down this is the best thing I’ve seen on TheXvid ever in my life :) thank you 🙏
@Bushradical 😍
Agreed
about 20 million people agree
Check out TheXvid, "My Self Reliance" This is a real cabin in the woods and his 2nd cabin build.
Can we just take a second to enjoy the time he spent setting up the camera angles? It would’ve taken him probably half the time to finish this project, but instead he chose to make some nice, satisfying content for us. What a guy.
@FunkoFever why not both lol
@FunkoFever jesus i hope i’m never as miserable as you go get help
@DR HATER 😇😇😇👍👍👍👍
And make some money off of it. Worth the time to be honest
I’m assuming there was someone else doing that
*The fact that you just woke up one morning and built this with your own hands and no help, it’s absolutely astounding!* Fascinating to watch you work! You should be very proud, it would take me 100 years to figure out something like this 😅🤔😊
@Dat Boi Trooper been a carpenter in New Zealand for the past couple of years, not dangerous just hard work and if it’s for you it’s a good way to make a living
It is... We wouldn't have homelessness today if only the govt would get outta the way. This gives people hope.
@Anthony framers are in high demand at the moment I'm sure you could find a job for a framing company, labour around for a couple months then learn some framing skills it's pretty fun I've been doing it for the past year and a half now. It's a dangerous job and it's pretty hard work so you might not want to make a career out of it
@Bushradical I think it’s incredible. I wish I had your knowledge and skillsets 😊🙌
I have never had my own home and now that I am alone and 72 years old, I would love to have a cabin like this to call my own. You and your wife are amazing! I binge watch your videos and enjoy the heck out of them.
I would build this backyard.
Yes. I concur. " You sir", not only built a amazing cabin in the woods,you also have great presence in a video as a example piece for teaching purposes. Loved it !.
That was awesome. My dad was a builder , taught himself, and taught my two brothers how to build. Made me appreciate how hard they worked. My dad is gone now. This video made me think of him.
Great memorie's last for eternity. May your dad rest in peace🌼🌼🌼
The amount of work that went into filming this build can't be understated. Great job my man. On both the filming and the construction.
Should be up for some film festival for BEST SHORT.
Winter forest - booming, like shots, croaking crows, snow from a spruce branch that fell by the collar, tracks in which the bottom is not visible, steam from wet mittens and parallel, now and then intersecting curves of ski tracks; spring forest - the smell of black, still frozen earth, flowing in all directions, choking with melt water, a stream, a thin white strip of skin blue from the cold between a sweater and jeans, and on it large pimples that can only be melted with lips; summer forest - hot drops of golden resin on copper bark, hair smelling of barbecue smoke, a white, daisy-covered sundress stained with dry red wine and a tickling pine needle that you can’t get at all if you don’t unbutton two thousand small, like ladybugs, buttons , rapidly spreading under the fingers along the back and chest.
@Why So Serious? just enjoy the video smh
Concepts, Perception, Levels, -Visuals- , Realism, Genuineness, Vybez, Kickback. *Here for it!!!!!!*
Es muy difícil escoger una *4.Fo/Hotxmilf* como la *favorita* del ámore, pero está siempre simplemente es otro nivel, 💕

Son unos de los mejores conciertos
This video build was the most relaxing I've seen so far also he was so humble in the face of mother nature all by himself with no help. THUMBS UP!!!!!!!!
I'm a 65 yr old Londoner and I watched the whole video totally relaxing and so interesting.
Thanks!
Dave, you made that look SO easy! I tried to get my hubby to build a small cabin on our property & he just laughs, Grrr!😡 I love watching Brooke, you & the puppers. I am jealous of every build you do. Keep up the great adventures.
Lori from Iowa👋🏼🥰
My dream is to build a cabin like this. I know basic construction, but I learned a lot from your video. genuinely, thank you!
👍
Not only is this cabin build entertaining to watch, the video is also relaxing because the guitar music in the background doesn't interfere with the narration- it supports it without being too loud or annoying. Bravo! If Bob Ross built cabins...
Good
Right far I feel sleepy rn
Bob Ross... A guy I would have loved to have met.
Nice to see an old soul such as his being mentioned and remembered. Good on ya
Exactly!😊
This was amazing to watch from start to finish, thank you for sharing this! The result looks beautiful and so cozy
Had a rough day at work. Came home and saw this in my feed. Twas a blessing to watch I'd say. Thank you very much Dave for taking us on this journey with you.
Glad you enjoyed it
This was a joy to watch. You did an excellent job, your construction skills look like they were built over many years.
This is helping me so much! I'm planing to build a 20x20 cabin with no running water and no electricity. (We might have a generator and a thing outside that holds water but not that much) Our land that we own also gets tons of snow, but when it melts the ground turns into clay
@Mary Thomas Best bet is to build it on a small island, yes getting crap there is hard, but it's worth it
Just what I've always wanted. Life without plumbing and electricity. Yep.
@Kate Thank you😊
Good luck! :)
The fact that I sat down and watched this whole process rather than skipping to the end to see the end product, says a lot about this video.
I feel the same way my guy...smh
@David Hasselhoff me too but I don’t remember typing my comment or even watching this. sometimes you just need to sit down and just watch something as if it’s a movie. Even if it’s a Timelapse. Just mute the video and put an external music source on in the background
@pickle eggs If you're not, just be a city dweller, it's your loss. You'll never know what you're missing. 😄
I skipped to the end
Same felt mad relaxing watching the video
This is the key to building your dream home. You start with a quick, decent sized shelter to base in during harsh weather. Then you build what you want long term, if needed, and turn the base shelter into a workshop, shed, or whatever you feel it serves as.
Great video King. I've always been interested in this type of building and living. Simple but yet enjoying. We as people don't need what society has deemed as normal living, surviving with the basics is what counts!
Oh man.. I just love this so much!! I'm doing renovations in my house, wishing I had help like you! Your cabin is AMAZING!! Thank you for sharing! ❤
I've totally been looking for this type of video. I know there's a lot more to it than meets the eye, but you literally made this the easiest way to build cabin.
What an awesome video! Great job on the cabin!
ياسر
@Bushradical this was a great video, thanks for sharing, in the process of selling my house, you could definitely build me a cabin, awesome job. Thanks again.
This guy needs a channel shout out!
Thanks so much!
I’m new to your channel and I have to say… I’m amazed on how easy you make it look I love on how you do the build step by step it’s seems effortless!!! I will show this video to my husband to see if he gets inspired to build my shed😬😬thank you for what you do with patience and gratitude. Blessings 🙏🏼👍🏻
Love it Dave. You make it look easy which I'm sure you've worked hard at for a long time. Thanks for sharing the build.
Retiring from the military in about six months and I’m truly inspired and super interested in doing what you’re doing. Thank you for this!
This was awesome to watch. The cabin is esthetically pleasing to look at on the interior and exterior. Thank you for sharing this!
This video is so satisfying and also informative. I really enjoyed watching it 💖
Your a good person
Do you have any children
Patti's good life been so funny
Curious about this foundation method, since you didn't notch the post is everything being held up by the nails? Wouldn't it be better to set everything on top of the supports versus nailing them in the sides?
Love your videos by the way. Thank you so much for sharing this great build. It takes a lot of patience and time to video record all the details besides building the whole thing. Congrats!
Someday I hope to have the skills to build a cabin as good as this. I’d want to build mine out of brick or stone though because I’m super paranoid of it burning down in a fire. But the layout and everything is really good.
good luck
I know, I'm late to this party BUT thank you for the honest building experience! Most videos don't show any of the hiccups and make everything look super easy. Beautiful!
Glad it was helpful!
Love it man. This is on my list of desires.

Great Job! I loved and checked my own work schedule by yours. I was proud they're exactly the same. But I'm too far gone to get much done anymore. I don’t think I’ve enjoyed watching a cabin go up more than I enjoyed this. Thank you sir.
Hello, I hope you don’t mind me asking but what was the estimated cost of this project? I’ve wanted to build a cabin for years but this just speaks to me.
Wow. This guy can build!
@garry weinberg I think he mainly just built it for youtube views/as cheap as possible. But could have easily poured some footings before hand and made structure actually last
@The Trashman unless it’s surrounded by great drainage but I would always go above grade one foot. In UP in Mich much higher

@garry weinberg Those posts are going to be completely rotted out so fast. Idk why people think this is acceptable for any sort of structure. Treated lumber isn't some magical stuff that doesn't rot.
It must have been the most amazing feeling when you finally get to sit down and enjoy all your hard work you done , knowing that this is me who has built my cabin !! Seriously , men who can build houses , cabins , it’s so so fascinating .. I just love the fact that you build your own home , where now you can enjoy this cosy Home ! Nothing fancy ? It’s fancy to me because it’s been build by your own hands , putting all the effort into it ! I think this is the fanciest home I have seen because nothing can be more precious than living out in the nature ! In winter it gets even more cosy ! Amazing job !! Thank you so much to share with us !! 🎆👏👏🙏
Congratulations on an amazing build! Very inspiring and so relaxing to watch😊
What an amazing build! I was amazed at your attention to detail and how everything fit “like a glove!”
glad to see there are people like you, building houses yourself, literally for some people thats impossible and most prefer buying already built ones, my respects to your hard work and persistence, keep the beautiful work up !
i can’t even imagine taking on this sort of building project never mind filming and documenting the entire thing with this sort of quality. i’m extremely impressed.
@Matthew Milam very true
If you don’t try it will never happen
@Jordan Mulyyy That would be a great reality show. Can you build a cabin in the woods.
Thanks!!
I watch your videos at night before I go to sleep. They are SO relaxing! Beautiful scenery, sounds, and bushcraft living. Just what the doctor ordered! Thank you for such wonderful videos!
This is such a great video. I currently live in California and my family has a bunch of land in Missouri. I have seriously been thinking about moving back there and building a house and way back in the woods, an off-grid cabin. Thank you for posting.
two questions.
how long will the 8x8s and 4x4s last being buried straight into the ground?
how much approximately did this build cost?
thank you very much. great video!
My son and I are halfway thru building this cabin - it’s been a great experience. I like that you show just enough for us to figure it out!
Are you making yours the same size? We're going to expand ours to 24ft.
Also how much you estimate this to cost
I have no experience doing handy work
Have you built anything before? I wanna try it
This is Discovery Channel level quality video making. I would easily watch a show about this kind of stuff all day. You just got yourself a new subscriber, Mr. Bushradical.
I'm an engineer, so I'd love to actually build a cabin similar to this instead of doing calculations in an office all day. Something about using your hands to actually make something just feels right.
@InspirationNation As an engineer, you've got 1/2 of it done already!
You would probably love the video of Dick Proenneke building his log cabin in alaska, very similar style of video to this. Its called "Alone in the wilderness" not sure if its on TheXvid or not but i Highly recommend it
@InspirationNation It is. Unfortunately in school we don't learn any of the hands on stuff. I can tell you all about the tensile and compressive strength of wood or any other material and how thick a beam needs to be to support "x" amount of weight, but the actual installation of the beam and how to use all of the tools is not covered. Most engineers are "self taught" in the hands on portion because we like it and that's what drove us to engineering in the first place, but there is no guarantee an engineer will know how to use every tool or know the tricks of the carpentry trade. I really like thermodynamic systems, and that's what I specialize in (think rockets and internal combustion engines) so other than the basics, woodworking is a very foreign topic to me. I know I could learn it, and that's part of the reason I'm watching these videos. To learn tips and tricks and expand my knowledge!
Isn’t engineering similar to woodworking? Also, is engineering similar to something like carpentry as well?
This is fascinating to watch! I‘m genuinely jealous that Americans have so much untouched nature and land where you can do stuff like this. You picked the perfect spot
btw. :)
@ROG ROG of course it is.
@S0urc3C0de correct, I‘m from Germany.
@ROG ROG What?
@S0urc3C0de not true.
Don't know how many times I've watched this video or your other small cabin build, but watching it tonight in front of a fire after finishing the foundation of my 12x16 in the remote woods feels a little special. Thanks for the inspiration.
This might be a dumb question, but is there any specific reason you don’t use plaster wall for the interior walls?
Also I love the videos, they enormously inspire me to do some building!
I really enjoyed this video, thanks for putting it together! Love the use of (mostly) hand tools, there’s something pure about using hand tools that power tools just can’t compete with.
This is by far one of the best cabin-raising videos I’ve ever watched. Great shots, easy narration, appropriate soundtrack, educational and entertaining, and of course, I have a fondness for the Upper Midwest. Felt like my uncle was talking me through a build. Can’t wait to see if there’s an update or part 2!
@Olivia • Idle Hour •liar
@Matt Christoff i don't want to lie. I typed this during a migraine i had for an entire day i was throwing up and felt pain in indescribable ways. There was a point i was trying to see how my head felt and wwtched s video and it flaried up again. I passed out and went to the ER and found out i have a benign tumor behind my eye and frontal sinus. Thankfully not cancerous. I just typed more long hardly coherent stuff sorry. The IV for pain isn't helping. I felt bad for typing nonsense lol. Be well. Sorry again.
@Olivia • Idle Hour • I guess anything is possible! It's a small world, indeed.
@لعشاق الأجواء الهادئة Relaxing atmosphere leave this guy alone. He looks like my friends friend Matthew Christoff, or just Christoff. Don't listen to this bot thing Christoff.
You look like this guy Matt Christoff My friend Ashley is friends with I met once.
Man the amount of discipline it must’ve took to finish the project entirely alone to the end is very admirable, I can’t even follow through changing out my cabinets even tho I work in stormdrain/freeway structures 😂
This was a very inspirational and enjoyable video! You’ve inspired me to give this a shot when I move to Northern Michigan this summer. Keep up the great work!
The fact that, you do lots of videos like this that is awesome we all love your content, it is really good, i love seeing people build cabins and stuff, but i rather watch theese, ones because your content, is amazing and your a very, positive guy, and your channel is one of my favourite TheXvidrs :)
You sir are a true inspiration! I love how passionate you are about what you do! Thank you for that! Thank you for sharing your passion with the world.
oh my gosh! I loved "you can nail a lot of boards together for $600 a month!" I've been trying to explain this to my family for so long but never knew how to put it into words. I'm moving to my land in January and really have never built anything bigger than a birdhouse (in 3rd grade for 4H). Everybody keeps telling me "Why don't you just get an apartment?". So I've been deemed the crazy lady of the family. Thanks for being an inspiration!
@Olivia • Idle Hour • family heritage was German farmers
@Jay xcv solar for electricity, or kerosene lamps, camp showers, ( I also have a membership with Planet Fitness for showering), I have a camp toilet until the outhouse is built, and I’ve lived without internet/WiFi for 10+ years. WiFi is not a necessity ever, lol
What about the electricity, showers, toilet and wifi? Lol
Yoo wheat craft is the name of my game. You craft wheat probably
@Tabula Rasa 600 a month of lumber is basically working on it one day a month until it 's done at current rate.
You make it look so easy! My dream to build one of my own. Thank you!
Go for it!

Very interesting. Thank you for teaching us
Few quick questions:
Did you use any protective treatment for bottom post's you insert in the ground?
How many days did u have spent on this project?
I love how modest u have been in tools. Nothing too fancy.
Love your channel. Very life friendly ☺️
He used pressure treated posts in the ground
Absolutely amazing. You're living my dream right now. I am too old to get something like that going, but watching this video helps me imagine it.
Amazing! May I ask how long did it take for you to finish the cabin and how much did it cost you? Thank you! :)
3 weeks 5.5k
Me leve pra ir morar aí nessa linda casinha com você. Sou do BRASIL. ❤️
Dave, I've always wondered with corrugated metal roofing...how do you keep bugs and birds etc out from underneath of it on the ends? I can see how you did it on the sides, but what do you do on the ends?
What a joy to watch this, laughing so hard when you tried to pick up that front wall... The sounds coming from you was just... And wow, how many builders work as clean as you do. Respect from Namibia. Keep going.
Enjoying your cabin builds, being an amateur at this I have definitely learned a lot. I was going to purchase a Derksen building to finish off on my land but you and your wife have inspired us to build our own off grid cabin. Thankful for both of your channels keep the vids coming.
Man, the echo through the forest everytime he hits nails with the hammer.. It's so peaceful. I live in the city now, but I am starting to miss nature. Definitely moving back someday. Greetings from Norway
You don't need anything fancy or over priced to make something amazing, I always enjoy these kinds of videos
Brilliant and very Inspiring! Makes me want to get out and build my cabin! A life long dream! Would love to see a list of tools and supplies you use as well as the overall cost. Love your channel! Your a natural and a master teacher!
@Rose Demello He used a drill, a hammer, a circular saw, a drawknife, a pneumatic brad nailer and a handsaw.
As real beginner who has no clue about power tools etc; can you give me the essential tool kit I would need to start building. I would really appreciate it.🤓
Thanks. All the tools are what i used in this video
As someone who has always dreamed of building my own little cabin in the woods but never got any foundation in construction, I thank you immensely for filming the entire process and showing how easy it can actually be. It's a huge inspiration, and I hope to start on my own cabin next season!
Go for it!
@Raymond Ashby Have you decided on a WiFi password yet. Having a hard time getting Spectrum to come run the cables for mine probably do it myself AT&T satellite isn’t so noticeable on the back side of the roof
@Faith Sasser keep it up!
@Brain Scott I do plan on buffing up anyway, though. Thanks for the good luck, we'll need all we can get!
@Andrew F. We are actually working on finishing a small concrete home that's been in the works for almost two years longer than what we had planned for due to the material shortages and other "life happens" reasons, so I totally agree that it's much much easier to do the planning than it is the actual building. I have no misconceptions about that haha
You are doing a wonderful job! Obviously, you have building structures for some time. Beautiful cabin! Love the green metal siding/roofing. But, green is my favorite color. Take care!
Watching these builds is great, they have inspired me to build my own off grid getaway spot😊
Great foundation design. I have built that stacked design many times, I loved the design.
This is the first time I’ve managed to watch a very long video without skipping. Your cabin looks amazing and it makes me wanna build one of my own 😍
Thanks
I have always seen myself as one with a short attention span. I always seem to skip around videos to see parts I want to and what not. But there is something about documenting the outdoors, and building something with ones hands, that just takes me to a different place. I watched the whole 40 minute videos without thinking about clicking off and watching something else once. I would like to thank you for the incredible job that you’ve done on the cabin, and on the video. Your cinematography is outstanding. The subtle music in the background, and the cinematic shots of the nature around you really tie the whole thing together. Also the occasional story here and there are really something special. I hope the cabin serves you well and houses many good memories.
Couldnt have said it better myself. I totally cannot watch long videos. I watched this whole thing and did not skip a second or pause once. WOW
Wow...I really thought this video was only 16 minutes but it sucked me in! I can't believe how much videos like these can actually calm my heartbeat!
After watching half this video I subscribed as it was awesome to see and have the privilege to learn from what you did. Camera work was absolutely amazing and I appreciate the time you took to make that happen as well. I look forward to watch your other videos as well. Awesome video!
Thanks!
Really great video. Good and non-intrusive and informative commentary, showing all steps, great editing with different angles and some nature in between and all this in under an hour! Chapeau, dear sir! ;)
Glad you enjoyed it!
How much did it cost to build this entire thing? I love it!
AWESOME PROJECT!!!! There's nothing more gratifying than building or creating something on your own. I have a humble question, when building these projects and home construction in general, why are nails preferably used instead of wood or decking screws to fasten or attached the pieces to one another??? I know that the nails are cheaper than the screws but aren't the screws better???
This was definitely worth watching the whole 41 minutes! Great video! Keep on with that good content!
I enjoyed it from the first second to the last!
You did a fantastic job!!!
Thanks for sharing this awesome video with us. God Bless
AWESOME VIDEO !! Makes me miss my family for some reason hahaha , but that’s what I like about it ! Small things like this make me even more excited to be able to return home to them one day if I’m so lucky
Where have you been? I love watching your bushradical videos, I have watched them all over and over. I wish you would make more videos, You have great story telling skills, great editing, and such a soothing voice. Even if the videos are as simple as cooking, hiking, or any simple subject, just make more videos.
Very rarely these days do I come across a TheXvid video that captivates my undivided attention for a full 40 minutes, without getting distracted or pausing whatsoever.
This video was definitely one of those occasions, loved every minute of it. You’re living the dream, amazing job on the cabin and the video!
You’re absolutely right. I just realized that I clicked the video and watched it in its entirety without pausing or putting it on my “Watch Later” list. That’s how I know this was a masterpiece.
Hoo-wee, time flies when you see the outdoors.
Wait a minute, 41min.... ?!
Well said. My thoughts exactly.

So, I know it may sound weird, but me and my father have been just going in the woods and making cabins for anyone to use at least a few times every year for the last 3 years. It’s hard work, but also a good bond for me and him, as well as the community. We don’t know much, but we do know one thing: this country needs more generosity!
YESSSS. If we could all concentrate on stuff like this, we can save this country.
yeah, i’ve been wanting to do this, but how do you find the land? do you purchase it?

Just found your channel. Watched start to finish. Amazingly inspiring! Beautiful job! I have subscribed :)
Thanks for the great video. I plan on taking your concept and building a similar cabin in the U.P. in the Huron Mountains on our property. Question: What is the make and model of the wood stove you used? Thanks again.
Camp chef
I can honestly say I can not remember watching something I enjoyed as much as this video for a very long time. What an enviable experience. You are blessed among men, sir.
You make it look so easy! The cabin is really nice, I‘d love to stay there!
Great video! Thanks! The only thing I would add is that I would use lifetime-guaranteed decking screws instead of nails. They last longer and hold better.
I absolutely enjoyed watching this video clip sir. Hats off to you. Brilliant work! 🙏❤️
This video was great. I enjoyed it a lot. They way he’s talking and explaining everything is very nice. I hope there are more videos of him building cabin’s and houses. Thank you for this one.
Dude I loved watching you. My father-in law talked me into building a 1500 sq ft ranch in 1985. He taught me all I needed to know. I went on to build a 3 stall garage with a beautiful wood shop. I still love the work but at 68 I can't work those 12 to 13 hour days anymore. Your talents will provide you with a very rewarding life. Don't forget. Jesus was a carpenter!!!
