  • Foldable phones are just getting started. Here’s what we know so far: the Huawei Mate X, the Samsung Galaxy Fold, and the Royole FlexPai. It's already obvious that they're going to be a big part of our shared technological future. The hype from all corners for them has been deafening, whether you're talking to hardware manufacturers, mobile carriers, or tech enthusiasts. As big and important as foldables will be though, they also face a long road of evolution and refinement, one where prices will need to come down and usability will have to go way up.

so sad that huawei didn't add pen support on their products. It would've been awesome but because of the invisible hinge on the center, you can't see it, but you can feel it when drawing

Samsung was smart, hiding their large screen on the inside so it's plastic screen is protected. How long will those other screens hold up when they don't have the glass protection and that soft plastic screen cover is on the outside getting bombarded by keys and what not?

A display folding inwards is a lot more technology advanced than a display folding outwards. Although I do agree that the mate x looks more aesthetic.

Have zero interest in the foldable phones. Why would you want a thick phone with huge bezels just to open it to a larger size? Plastic screen reminds me of that awful droid Verizon had a while back. 🤢

I think we need 8x optical zoom. Remember in the 90s and 2000s where everyone had handheld cameras that actually zoomed?? We’ve actually downgraded that technology with phones today.

I don't necessarily think it's a complete gimmick, but yes right now the designs we've been shown haven't been practical. If they have a Motorola phone which is literally a flip phone and a smartphone, I think there would be a huge market for something like that. These giant tablet looking things are just silly. Especially when Apple so clearly owns the market share with their iPad line. Android doesn't make applications really which support that size of display and they've tried before and failed.

The outward folding display of the Mate X is doomed for failure. While it looks better sleeker and cleaner than the Galaxy Fold, you can’t put a screen protector or a case on it and with that plastic screen it’s going to look horrible in 6 months time. I believe Samsung thought this thing through a little more and will only improve on the design over the coming years. Right now it’s too small, too thick, too expensive and missing an s pen.

Honestly I'm not sure how you can look at the Galaxy Fold and not see how it's the best solution. The Huawei is nice looking but the whole point of these devices in my opinion is to have a smaller profile device when you want and to be able to expand the experience. The Huawei is huge.
Let's talk about the fact that it's the only foldable device out of the 3 or 4 out there that looks finished and premium. The others look cheap and gimmicky even though they are more expensive.
Now price. $1980 12gbs of Ram and 512 GB of storage. More cameras than anyone could ask for wireless charging etc etc.....in the box is a Kevlar Case worth in the $40-$60 more than likely based on other Samsung cases and a pair of Galaxy buds which is $130 value so nearly $200 in accessories included in the box.
So now it's around $1700 maybe a little less. All that and I can rest my phone on the table without exposing my expensive foldable display to unnecessary scratches.
Wasn't really a fan how you lumped the Fold with the flexpai like they are even comparable.
Just my 2 cents that no one asked for.

i think inwards-folding and outwards-folding types are going to coexist
both has it's merits and flaws, and different people prioritize different features
but samsung and boe is the only company that can mass-produce folding amoled displays, and still boe cant come even close to samsung's scale of production and quality. samsung makes amoled displays for pretty much every flagship smartphones including their own galaxy series
samsung's folding display can fold at a greater degree than boe's, so samsung weny with infolding phone, so apple might make their phones infold as well cause they're gonna buy the displays from samsung
boe's production speed can't match apple's requirement anyway

The presenter isn't up to standards for "Verge." Anyway, this video is very premature since the predominate players have really put their foldable out in the market. Just imagine what apple can do to perfect this kind of tech. Remember, apple never invent anything, but it implement existing tech better than anyone. And don't forget the ipad. If there is anything that can utilize the big screen most effectively right now in the market, it will be an iphone which fold open to become an ipad.
