@chris companies do business with the government all the time. SpaceX was not given billions, they were awarded contracts worth billions. Tesla got a loan which they repaid with interests in less time required of them and also benefitted from subsidies for the nascent clean energy technology meant to promote America's energy independence and reduce global warming.
Over on the other side, the legacy automakers get bailed out by the government to the tune of billions every time there is an economic downturn. The oil and gas industry is also heavily subsidised by the governments all over the world. These are the facts, do what you will with it

I don't particularly like Tesla's business practices of trying to turn vehicle ownership into a service. But I have a lot of respect for the man and what he is trying to do with space travel. Discoveries and innovations up there, make us all better off down here. Although his recent actions really diminish that respect.
I admire Elon massively and am very happy to see how successful both private companies have become but I'm abit sceptical to say he "saved" the two companies when as stated, NASA funded over a billion into a project for SpaceX to achieve which without I'm sure this video wouldn't be here. More like he very successfully "turned around" both businesses

It's quite extraordinary. You can trace every one of his business ideas to needs for a Mars colony. SpaceX is obvious. Tesla for electric cars on Mars (as you wouldn't likely have fossil fuels, with easier solar collection in a thinner atmosphere than ours despite the distance). Solar for powering a colony. Boring for creating cheap tunneling and huge underground atmosphere environments. Hyperloop to connect likely vastly spread out colonies.
It's actually a really interesting way of thinking about product development: What are the needs for Mars to be sustainable, and how can we make a business case for the same usage here on Earth to get others to invest in the idea? Terraforming is going to be key, so businesses refarming deserts and plains will likely be next. Protein synthesis or similar will be important to keep human nutrition sustainably without the ability to farm, so investing heavily in cloned or plant-based meat will also be something he'll do soon.

Aruparna Maity It is impressive what Elon Musk is able to achieve. Having a great vision for setting up two companies. He also managed to find very capable staff. We hardly get to see the people doing the hard labour to get it all done.
Loved this video and I well done on scraping together all this info and putting it all into a short video, although the music choice made the video slightly more difficult to get through.
