As far as I know it is possible but you have to use a solid piece of wood (raw not treated) and soak it in water so that the wood becomes saturated (not sure if hardwood or softwood will work better). I may be wrong but maybe try that instead of a cheap bowl from the store. Maybe baking the wood to essentially fire harden it and then soaking the wood.
This kind of reminds me of boiling water with leather. Suspend a sheet of leather over a fire and fill it with water. The water will seep through keeping the leather from burning.

Just a thought. Old time, you didn't have any coating on the bowl, just pure wood, the water would soak through the wood and wouldn't that prevent the bowl to turn to coal that much???

it appears like a reflection from the water in the bowl. it is the tkor krown but the triangle is pointing downward and it's not really a triangle it's actually got five sides to it. so yes "this" does work... badly :)

If you revisit this, try submersing the wooden bowl (with water in it), into already boiling water/oil to see if that would work better.

  • Yellow Truck Productions

They way our ancestors boiled water in animal hides and even baskets was to heat rocks in a fire and drop them into the water. The cooled rocks were removed (wooden tongs!) and new heated rocks introduced until the cooking was done. Maybe a bit gritty, but it works and didn't destroy the container.

You should try an untreated and wet wood bowl as the water than could permenantely permeate the wood and maybe would prevent the burning completely.
