Guys, I really enjoy your videos, but I'd urge you to significantly edit this and carefully reconsider doing stuff like this in future. Particularly with the foundry, you put yourself at risk for a steam explosion if things go wrong.

I have boiled water in plastic bottles, dry bags, and even a heavy canvas hat once but I've never tried wood. But, I absolutely could boil water in a wood bowl if I needed to. All you have to do is heat up some rocks in the fire and then drop them in the bowl. It'll boil pretty quickly and easily.
Edit: and then you mentioned my method at the end of the video.

That's why you don't boil the vessel in a survival situation. You heat the rocks in a fire and put them directly into the water in your bowl that way you heat it up to a boil but don't destroy it. It also keeps you from drinking varnish in this instance.

Short answer yes, the water keeps the bowl cold enough to not burn. Filla plastic bottle completely with water amd throw it in a fire and itl stay there till the pressure pops from boiling water then itl finally melt.

As far as I know it is possible but you have to use a solid piece of wood (raw not treated) and soak it in water so that the wood becomes saturated (not sure if hardwood or softwood will work better). I may be wrong but maybe try that instead of a cheap bowl from the store. Maybe baking the wood to essentially fire harden it and then soaking the wood.
This kind of reminds me of boiling water with leather. Suspend a sheet of leather over a fire and fill it with water. The water will seep through keeping the leather from burning.

Just a thought. Old time, you didn't have any coating on the bowl, just pure wood, the water would soak through the wood and wouldn't that prevent the bowl to turn to coal that much???

  • utuber52
    utuber52 2 months ago

it appears like a reflection from the water in the bowl. it is the tkor krown but the triangle is pointing downward and it's not really a triangle it's actually got five sides to it. so yes "this" does work... badly :)
