I Gave Up The Internet For A Week

  • Published on Jun 22, 2018
  • After feeling too attached to the internet, social media, and my devices for so long, I decided to go cold turkey -- 100% internet free for an entire week.

You are so encouraging and inspirational. I first began watching your channel when I came across the ballet video. After that, I started watching more. I just wanted to let you know that each of your videos that I watch encourages me to get out there and try new things that maybe I wouldn't have before. Michelle, you are a really cool person. Thank you for making videos like this and please keep doing them!

Try me. I moved into a new house a bit before summer break and I didn’t have internet at that house until a week before school started again. I at least got to go have internet for short bursts with a hotspot or someone else’s house. It was torture as we kept calling the internet company and they said, “in a week” or “ in a few days” for about a month and a half.

I did not have access to a phone till I was 14 years old. My mom did not allow us to have a TV when we were in elementary and middle school. The computer we had was timed and did not really have any access to it unless we had permission too. So I did not know what google or the internet really was until I was in high school. I still don’t know how a phone works😂😂 I used to tell myself I won’t be so dependent on my phone and the internet but I realized that we can’t really live without the internet sometimes ❤️

    1. Parents need to stop complaining about “Oh my child is so spoiled and glued to their phone” “My children don’t go outside anymore”. First of all, why buy them a phone in the first place? I’d assume so you’d know where they are, and to text/connect with people, right?. That’s why my parents have gotten me a phone. Of course I play games or go on social media, but guess what? I still have restrictions on my phone. If you don’t want your kids to be glued to their phone then give them a time of how long to use it, unless needed for emergencies.
    2. Adults like to complain on how the next generation will grow up with iPhones and not know what it was like without technology. Adults have been a the ones producing and updating technology. I’m sorry but if a product is a good ass product then people are gonna buy it.
    3. It’s really not a bad thing at all growing up with technology either. Before, society didn’t know about the outside world as much. Counties without modern technology don’t know much about the dangers going on around the world. In fact I think technology helps open your eyes. Technology gives us so many pros it’s too much to list. However, being on your phone 24/7 is bad. Hell, too much of anything is bad. You need to create a balance. Again, balance goes back to parents giving their kids restrictions on phone. Many adults need to take a break sometimes too. At dinner both my parents are on their phones throughout, they can’t even take a 30 min break.
Balance is all you need in life. That’s my best advice.

My highschool has a lot of amazing trips you can go on and they are making almost all of them tech free to force kids to be more present and engaged on the trips! I've gone on a trip every year (I just graduated) and honestly when you're in other country, especially doing a homestay without your phone, it's scary. But I felt like it did make me really focus in on other people and the interactions I had with them. Would 100% recommend you try this next time you travel somewhere or even at home!

I turned twenty not too long ago, it took me until I was seventeen to figure out what google was. I've never had any friends because I don't know how to navigate my phone (seriously, like wheres the instructions?!) I write letters to all of my family members if I want to stay in touch...I'm at a library typing this btw. Because I don't have internet. To answer your question, yes absolutely I live out in the middle of nowhere.
Anyway, just clicked on this video to see how people reacted in the comments. Just remember that to me\us, you guys are the weird ones! You're a slave to a little box that talks to you!

P.S Oh yeah, I also didn't have tv's, ipods etc etc. And a girl thought I was mocking her once when I smiled at her bag and asked who was on it...I grew up in the One Direction era so apparently not knowing who Harry Stiles and Justin Beiber were was offensive?

Another side note- how come everyone knows these musical artists but not know what an atlas or yellow-pages is? I mean come on, I can play the third movement to Beethoven's Moonlight Sonate. That's! Music...I could rant for days.

This is such a common struggle!
One thing that helped me a lot was to set a daily limit on social media apps and also block them completely during sleeping hours. I also don't have email notifications on my phone because I realised that gave me so much anxiety. I still check my emails daily on my computer, but once it's off everything work related is done for the day and it helps me relax and get better sleep :)
Thank you for your great content!

There have been two times that I've been forced to go a full week with no phone bc they've broken. It was insanely frustrating trying to spend time with people.. At some point every time they would all have their phones out and leave me out to dry. But over all it was really nice being disconnected. I've never really used social media (- TheXvid) but not even having the option felt nice. Having to ask for the time constantly got me some weird looks though lol.
