LOL I love how the Stegosaurus had a turkey neck. Home fries needs to go and see a plastic surgeon to get that fixed. I like how the ceratosaurus bobbed his head like a chicken, or whatever weird movement it was making, that was pretty funny too. I Love your videos you do a great job. Jurassic Park is my number 1 love, I always loved dinosaurs, then JP came out and that just made me love dinosaurs even more. The JP novels are the only reason why I got into reading as a kid.

I remember my grate grandparents had like a whole tub of solid plastic dinos in like 4 different colors that looked exactly like these old dino looks. They had those way before me or any of my cousins where born. I think they might have been my grandpa's toys or one of his brothers. I don't know why I never looked at them as a kid and thought they looked weird because I had watched every Jurassic Park movie as a kid (started watching at around 5 years old :D dino nightmares for life lol). I don't think I knew though that the Parasaurolophus was as Parasaurolophus because of how odd they looked. I think if I remember correctly I would call them the fin neck dinosaur.

  • Natural History Central

A "featherless" T.rex isn't completely out of the question. Based on the Bell et al. paper in 2017, Tyrannosaurus had small avian scales that covered the whole body, with cracked facial scales and various bosses. The body skin would've looked very elephantine. It may have had a small coat on the back of the head or the trunk, but otherwise, completely "featherless".

Man, this is an incredible idea. Since it's pretty much a sin nowadays to show any sort of affection toward retrosaurs, seeing someone go to this much effort to make all the JPOG dinosaurs retro-fied is really cool. Very Carnivores-esque, with all the Burian and Knight inspirations, love it. My favorite is the Spinosaurus, gotta love old Spino restorations.

    • The Wolf of Comedy
The Wolf of Comedy 8 months ago +10

In a weird way, retrosaurs were actually a lot more accurate than the dinosaur depictions in the latter 20th century and early 2000s. Old retrosaurs were often depicted in much more naturalistic situations, sleeping, drinking, resting, feeding, etc. The dinosaurs were easy-going, placid creatures that behaved like actual ANIMALS. After the first JP movie, dinosaurs were depicted as these savage, bloodthirsty killers which focused the majority of their lives simply killing (Evident in programs like Jurassic Fight Club, Monsters Resurrected, etc.) Dinosaurs in the old days had a much more subdued tone, while dinosaurs in more recent times act simply WAY too violent.

      Saurian Target
The fact that people may often complain about the persistence of outdated reconstructions of extinct animals doesn't mean the paleo community dislikes retrosaurus.
As a matter of fact a lot of Paleontologist show a great deal of respect to vintage Paleoart. The blog Love In Times of Chasmosaurus is mainly focused on it. Many amateur and professional artist (most notably Mark Witton) try to emulate the style of XX century paleoart even if the depictions try to be as up to date as posible. For scientist is always humbling to see how far science has come and the fact that many of those reconstructions were so based on the latest scientific knowledge of the time instead off clinging to older sources of information for "nostalgia value" helps.
There are times where it does feel that sticking with older ideas may actually more harm than good or where the style is just very inconsistent ( The Good Dinosaur mixes Knight style Parasaurolophus and Sauropods with "hairy" raptors, for example).

Anyone else getting Love in the Time of Chasmosaurs feels? "Vintage Dinosaur Art" in JPOG!
I can't actually believe it: I've been on/off working on a mod just like this. It was a giant mishmash of early 20th Century dinosaur fiction: basically, expeditions (dig teams) went to Lost Worlds (dig sites) to capture dinosaurs (fossils) or eggs (amber). All the JP characters were replaced with heroes from classic dinosaur fiction: Grant with Professor Challenger (The Lost World), Hammond with Carl Denham (King Kong), Ellie with Ajor (The People That Time Forgot), Arnold with Grauben Lidenbrock (Journey to the Centre of the Earth), Ludlow with David Innes (At The Earth's Core), & other heroes from classic dinosaur fiction. It would feature models based on Willis O'Brien & Ray Harryhausen's iconic creatures, with names taken from dubious or superceded species (Antrodemus, Trachodon, Agathaumas etc) just to make them distinct. Maybe everything could even be in black & white, to really make it stand out from other mods, using the actors from classic dino films as the portraits (Wallace Beery's Challenger, Robert Armstrong's Denham, Arlene Dahl's Lidenbrock, Dana Gillespie's Ajor etc)
That Struthiomimus could be easily retextured/rejiggered into the Ornithomimus from "The Valley of Gwangi", & the JPOG models for Styraco, Steg, & Trike already sort of drag their tails a bit just like their counterpartes in "Valley of Gwangi," "King Kong," & "1 Million Years B.C." respectively. I love the trend for turning Kentrosaurus into Nodosaurus, but I think it could just as easily be remoulded into Polacanthus from "Planet of Dinosaurs." I love that the Para, Trike, & Laelaps all look like they stepped out of a Charles R. Knight painting.
Trachodon was everywhere in my old dinosaur books, & if anything, this is a *conservative* interpretation. They took the "duck-bill" part really seriously. It's a shame some of the models were a bit messed up due to installation issues. Guess I'll have to install it myself!
But you want to know the REALLY weird thing? None of these are even CLOSE to the most bonkers interpretations of dinosaurs we've had. The dinosaurs in this mod were *mainstream*: you should check out some of the wild stuff from actual scientists like...
... Walter Coombs thought sauropods had elephant or tapir-like trunks
... Louis Dollo thought Iguanodon had a hole in its lower mandible that it used to poke its tongue out to feed (it turned out the jaw was broken, which you'd THINK would've been the first thing Dollo thought)
... William Jacob Holland thought Diplodocus had splayed lizard-like limbs - the small matter of his ribs being too long to make locomotion possible explained by Dippy digging a trench into the ground to accommodate his deep body
... John McLoughlin thought Triceratops' frill was the anchor for huge neck muscles, making it hump-backed like a modern bison rather than the frilled beastie we all know and love
... Alan Bidar thought Compsognathus was aquatic & had huge Therizinosaurus-like hands that were webbed for paddling
    ... E. A. Maleyev thought Therizinosaurus was a turtle-like quadruped
... W.H. Ballou thought Stegosaurus used its plates to glide like a bird
... Literally anything Peter David came up with
If you haven't already, have a gander over at Love in the Time of Chasmosaurs' Vintage Dinosaur Art series, some real gems in there.

I've recently had an idea about making a Tycoon style game with Dinosaurs in which you could play on several scenarios in different ages. For example a Crystal Palace Park in the middle of the XIX century, or a post-Renaissance Jurassic Park like setting in the 70's or 90's. Maybe have some appropiate buildings and npc's for each era (maybe a Mary Ann expy for the XIX century and a Bob Bakker or Jack Horner expy for the late XX century?)
