The stretch 'Walkman' - fixed-up & shown-off

  • Sony occasionally repurposed the Walkman cassette mechanisms for devices like this impressive do-it-all travel companion for the international (walk)man of mystery. Suitable for carrying in a briefcase, recording meetings and voice memos, working as an alarm clock, catching up on news from back home and listening to stereo music cassettes on the plane.
UPDATE: I noticed in the closeups that a few parts of the Walkman needed another clean - so after the video was edited I’ve gone back and done this. Specifically there’s a bit of belt residue that you can see on the tape door in some shots. That stuff gets everywhere - you’ll also see it on my fingers in the review of the 40th Anniversary Walkman.

Techmoan, every time i now see a video on the tubes talking about a broken cassette player or turntable the first thing that goes through my mind is "oh yeah, the drive belt is probably broken". You are teaching a valuable lesson here ;-)

Very cool device. What baffles me is the fairly well tought out servicability for such a "portable" device. You really don't see it anymore these days.

What is that thin SONY device on the far left at the start, branded a "WalkMan" and looks a bit like a real skinny WM-D6C PRO??

I have a device which I’ve always called a personal tape recorder, which could be a Walkman. But unfortunately, it broke recently. I would like to fix it, as Wellers getting another one as a spare. I’m wondering how easy they are to repair. I haven’t really had much experience in the past, but I am willing to try if it’s not too hard. I have another one that is broken, and has a good belt in it. As I’m pretty sure it’s the belt as the motor is going but nothing inside is moving. As for getting a spare, I like your video about which Sony Walkman, but You didn’t talk about many ones that record. The conditions I have on getting a new one, is that they are pocket sized, but have an inbuilt speaker and microphone and can play and record. I was born blind, so audio is very important to me. And I really enjoy retro tech. And have thoroughly enjoyed watching your videos. I wonder if you could make a video on which Sony Walkman if you want one that records? Otherwise, would there be any other way of contacting you?

This dang mini boombox uses 2 batteries, Why the heck do so many dang SW radios (without ANY tape player!) need 3 nowadays?!? (Tinfoil Conspiracy Theory Time...) I think that since most batteries are sold in EVEN numbers, The radio manufactures are PAID OFF by battery companies. They KNOW you will buy 4 (with the intent of hanging on to the "spare" one until you have collected 3 "spare" ones.) This WON'T HAPPEN (you'll forget,or lose them...) and it's an extra 25% profit for the battery companies!

If I recall correctly. every Walkman had at least a provision for a belt clip. I doubt this on did. Thus, not a Walkman. Anyhow, just a guess.

Nice fix. Thanks for the belt supplier link. 👍 As for RFI, buildings these days are full of it thanks to cheap Asian imports and zero policing of the regulations. Need to go out to a park or such to get a away from it all.

For recording radio in the future I don't know if it's a big concern but for copyright reasons you should get one of those Bluetooth fm transmitters. Just an idea in case that's a concern as it was in a few of your past videos.

That walkman belt residue is really something... I took one apart a year ago and I still see black smudges around the house because somehow the small particles have gone everywhere only for me to end up somehow smearing them which reveals their position, it takes some time to wipe off too

My god, you just helped me more than I expected.. I watched this for entertainment and ended up finding out why I wasn't able to tune some bands in on my SDR setup. I have 3 SDR radio tuners and use them for listening to FM (WFM), police bands (they're not encrypted in southern Florida) and weather radio on narrow FM (NFM), which is important down here during hurricane season.. But I never was able to get lower frequencies. The room I use it in has 4 LED strips for a total of around 8m under some tables I have here, as well as 3 LED bulbs on the ceiling fan. I turned all this off and started getting reception I never did before. I can't believe this was causing the problem..

Use Shellite better than isopropyl alcohol for cleaning. Also safe to use on rubber and plastic items as the isopropyl alcohol will dry them out and make them hard brittle.

Isopropyl with dental floss? I'll have to remember that one. Wood toothpicks are good too; they can't scrape 100% off but it still might reduce the amount of flossing.
