Does a forge cost a fortune in gas? When your burner is running for hours it's probably not cheap. Blacksmithing always interested me, but I always assumed it has a high running price after the initial setup cost

It depends on your blower and the size of the forge. If you just want to try it out you could try out a small coffee can sized forge and a 5 gallon tank could run you the whole weekend.

  • Snakedoctor O'Reilly

Lacking in a lot of direction. Doesn’t tell the size of the steel, or anything. Just starts with “first you’re gonna want to weld this together.” Weld what?? Details! Where to get steel? Size of the hole in the front and back of the box. Dimensions of the box. Thickness of the steel?. Come on. Doesn’t tell what types of “soft bricks” those are. (Fire bricks). Doesn’t tell what exactly the “hard bricks” are. Where to get them. Details missing majorly here.

You know this is a really stupid fuckin guide because if people can afford the tools used to make this they can most likely buy a 200 dollar propane forge it would have been a lot better if they showed us how to make a charcoal and or coal forge

I find it oddly hilarious that Alec can't MIG weld.

I have little to no experience with forging and blacksmithing. I built a coal forge in High School welding shop, used it mainly for burning things. In welding class I did bend and hammer some metal, heated with a cutting torch (oxy/acetylene).

I'd like to think I am a fairly competent welder. Good enough to tell a master welder from a student and all the degrees inbetween. And yet, as easy as I find MIG welding, the art of blacksmithing seems like high wizardy to me, but Alec, who has made things I cannot imagine myself making, struggles to do something I wouldn't even hesitate doing.

Not sure what that says about the unique crafts of both welding and blacksmithing. I do not intend to state that one is "factually" more difficult than the other, not at all. I just find this to be an odd situation of "I can do things he apparently can't (or to a degree of skill), that I thought of as being easy, but he is capable of doing things I cannot even begin to imagine doing.

Keep up the amazing work Alec. Your videos have inspired me to get back into metalworking and blacksmithing, and out of IT.

Could I just mod my old bbq from my backyard? (it's one of those barrel-style bbq's with an exhaust pipe that'd probably be perfect to stick a blow dryer in, only question I've got is if it's dangerous to use a rusty bbq as a forge, and if the bbq can handle the heat....)

Question, would you need a forge for gunsmithing? I know it's probably a stupid question to ask as blacksmithing and gunsmithing are two different things, however I just thought I'd ask as I've been told that if I want to get into gunsmithing that I'd have to do blacksmithing first, anyway that's my question, bye

Looking to get into blacksmithing? First you need a CNC/milling machine to make these perfect steel plates. Then you need some decent welding equipment. Then you can make this forge for beginner smiths.

I would like a 'double burner' forge made out of a Beer Keg or Propane Cylinder. What about using coal/wood and bellows for a forge? It is good enough to extract metals from rock in a smelt and used throughout history instead of propane, is it good to use as a forge? Could just be blowing air on the coals instead of pressurized propane.. a little extra carbon might not hurt the steel, and it is possible that using propane detracts from 'traditional' forging. Maybe even a hybrid forge between both, using coal & propane with bellows... could just use an industrial 'blower' for your bellow.

I was inspired by this video and I actually built this forge. I used a burner I made from iron pipe fittings and a .030 mig tip. It works and gets hot but because I am new I’m not sure how to set the fuel and air to be the most effective and efficient. It seems like a good amount of blue flame is coming out the front of the forge. I’m starting to think it needs to be deeper? It’s only 9” front to back. Any advice would be awesome!
