Could I just mod my old bbq from my backyard? (it's one of those barrel-style bbq's with an exhaust pipe that'd probably be perfect to stick a blow dryer in, only question I've got is if it's dangerous to use a rusty bbq as a forge, and if the bbq can handle the heat....)

I watched a guy make something similar out of an LP cylinder. However, he didn't user bricks he had a plush flexible material looked like insulation batting (white. He mentioned getting it come-up to temperature over the course of a few days before first use. Any ideas why that might be?

Question, would you need a forge for gunsmithing? I know it's probably a stupid question to ask as blacksmithing and gunsmithing are two different things, however I just thought I'd ask as I've been told that if I want to get into gunsmithing that I'd have to do blacksmithing first, anyway that's my question, bye

i mean this is definitely not a beginner guide... seems rather expensive and a working knowledge of welding is required.. let alone owning a welding machine.

  • Maxx Dreygan

Looking to get into blacksmithing? First you need a CNC/milling machine to make these perfect steel plates. Then you need some decent welding equipment. Then you can make this forge for beginner smiths.

I would like a 'double burner' forge made out of a Beer Keg or Propane Cylinder. What about using coal/wood and bellows for a forge? It is good enough to extract metals from rock in a smelt and used throughout history instead of propane, is it good to use as a forge? Could just be blowing air on the coals instead of pressurized propane.. a little extra carbon might not hurt the steel, and it is possible that using propane detracts from 'traditional' forging. Maybe even a hybrid forge between both, using coal & propane with bellows... could just use an industrial 'blower' for your bellow.

If you’re not able to get a burner then look up on TheXvid candle v2 burner by chiefchen. It a good burner and easy to make. If you’re not comfortable messing with that sort of stuff you can see if any local gas fitters can help you.

I was inspired by this video and I actually built this forge. I used a burner I made from iron pipe fittings and a .030 mig tip. It works and gets hot but because I am new I’m not sure how to set the fuel and air to be the most effective and efficient. It seems like a good amount of blue flame is coming out the front of the forge. I’m starting to think it needs to be deeper? It’s only 9” front to back. Any advice would be awesome!

I watch every video that you upload here on TheXvid and I'm very impressed with your talent, skill, and knowledge. I figure you would be the best person to ask this question to: I have watched quite a few videos on making propane forges. This is probably a stupid question but I figure I would still ask. Could I use natural gas for a forge instead of propane? If so, is there a difference between temperatures between using natural gas instead of propane? My wife's grandparents left her their house when they passed away. Her grandpa had a natural gas valve or set up installed outside under the back patio so he could run his propane gas grill off of natural gas instead of propane. I am thinking about using that set up for a forge instead of using propane. This way I don't have to worry about buying a propane tank and refilling it when I run out. In my way of thinking it's a pretty good idea. I was impressed when I saw what he had done and will be even more impressed if I can use it for a forge.
