The Mountain Dew Game Jam was one of the most expensive failures to ever grace our humble website. What could've been a fascinating insight into the sheer creativity that goes into the creation of the video games you spend your days laying in your couch hole scratching your belly to, ended up being an absolute travesty, with a gaping hole in Polaris's pocket. Starring massive TheXvid personalities such as Jontron, Markiplier, CaptainSparklez and Angry Joe, as well as indie game developers such as Zoe Quinn, Adriel Wallick and Tom Jackson, this video essay tells a tale of greed, corporate meddling, bigotry, and enough Mountain Dew to drown a baby billy goat.

Matti was a real pos. No question. The real problem, however, wasn’t Matti or Mountain Dew. It was the executive forces at work at Maker that were primarily at fault. When they didn’t listen and Matti started acting up, Aaron and I shut it down. It was that simple. The video is fun and accurate to a point but it stops being grounded in reality at 6:14, right around the mention of the queef cannon.

Thing is, Matti isn't even the real problem. The real problem is that companies actually deliberately hire guys like him in order to get the drama out of something like this. If the industry wouldn't be so fucked up, someone like him wouldn't be in a position like that.

I feel like one of the dumber things about trying to force everyone to drink specifically Mountain Dew, is that PepsiCo has water bottle brands they could have used as alternatives. It would have looked less fake and it still would have been product placement for the larger company to have Mountain Dew cans interspersed with Aquafina bottles. AND I feel like that would have potentially gotten them some sales from people that weren't going to be convinced to buy Mountain Dew regardless of their efforts.

    • Benjamin Matheny
Benjamin Matheny 12 days ago +1

Pepsi maybe the parent company but I would guess that each brand is managed individually. The mountain dew guys sponsored this event, and they are judged based on how their efforts improve mountain dew's position. While allowing other Pepsi brands wouldn't hurt the parent company, it would hurt the middle managers.

I used to work for Pepsi and was around when they started the Gamer fuel thing.

The company invests a TON of money in to research.
So they listen to the "professionals" the majority of the time.

During my time with them there was a lot of competition with energy drinks and Pepsi at that time was not able to corner that market in the way they wanted to.
So Mountain Dew became the "thing" that research had shown could be used to target a specific demographic, that being gamers and why not.
It came in various distinct flavors, it looks cool and it was already gaining popularity amongst gamers.

Their other products weren't in the plan from the start for a reason, they were attempting to make one of their products a "thing" that could be related to gaming, also they would be able to work better marketing deals with AAA developers or the companies that produced the systems.

Red bull and Monster Energy are a good example of good Marketing and have done excellent in targeting a specific demographic.
Pepsi wanted to do the same with all things videogame.

While 400k+ sounds like a lot to us for a failed project, to them its nothing. The company is worth billions, they spend millions on R&D every single day.

      Lawofimprobability 2 months ago

@A Hard Worker Seems like a reasonable guess but I wonder if the contract with him was drafted to require promoting only Mountain Dew or just any Pepsi product. I can imagine a scenario in which the goal was to promote one product specifically (such as part of a larger campaign to appeal to a different customer base) but the managers didn't think about the risks of infuriating the talent. Managers dealing with big-name sports starts probably get more discretion (or feel they have more discretion) than those dealing with relatively unknown game devs and youtubers.

Matti is the perfect microcosm of what happens when overpaid, undereducated, trash fire marketing execs are allowed to run everything into the floor. Dude's a walking Dunning Kruger graph, and the sad part is he's just gonna move on to the next project and projectile-shit all over that, too.

@Neo Qwerty 『Venom Strike』 Yes, marketing is one of those fields where if they do their job right you never notice them. Of course, they also are given to much power over things they don't know about. Matti for example didn't do his job wrong, he had the wrong job. Dude went into something meant to advertise nice people with the same goal as a show meant to show off the worse of humanity. For a reality show it would have worked fine, but for Game Jam? The drama should have been, big bugs breaking a game, time running out for a preset portion, and other ways to make the coding the focus.

It's bizarre to me that, when talking to someone who basically does PR for a living managing his own brand that reaches millions, anyone would expect any other kind of answer. All that rep did was show that he hadn't even made the slightest effort to find out who he was working with. He's either extremely overconfident or he didn't care about the show at all. Either way he acted about as disrespectful as possible.

I love how he didn't say anything like no women are better but that the variation of opinions and viewpoints due to differences of experience leads to an advantage that could heighten the experience for players. The problem would be that the vast majority find it pretty boring to watch people tap away at keyboards. Shows like this want to get that majority to watch.

It can be done, just not the way it was attempted here.

Of course this happens on every reality TV show from the US, I'm totally surprised there was an actual clause to misrepresent. A woman in Australia won a case against a home renovation show for making out she was a total bitch, which cost her employment and ruined her reputation for years.

On he biggest loser they taunt the contestants off screen to get them to cry.

It's amazing to think that Jon and Zoe worked together in a professional setting and, even given ample opportunity to be vindictive and petty, they were adults. They talked it out, and they weren't willing to smear the other. Your political opinions and disagreements do not preclude you from being a good person. Your history of being awful does not preclude you the choice to be good. Debate your disagreements, air your greivances, but don't be barbaric about it. Honestly warms my heart to see them come out the other end of their disputes still willing to be cordial, it's honestly not something you see enough of anymore

Sometimes respect cannot be given to a person no matter how much they try to wash their hands of their sins and selfish thoughts.

@Rabbi Herschel Lieberman-Bergblattstein oh wow it was 42 not 17, that really helps your case. As I needed to look it up to refresh my memory (I don't often read fairy tales anymore) it says specifically LITTLE CHILDREN but ok keep making excuses. While we're at it you can try to excuse this as well: when King David (thanks for bringing him up and reminding me) had a man killed because he committed adultery with his wife and got her pregnant, instead of god punishing the man who committed the crime he literally murdered an innocent baby AND THEN LET DAVID KEEP THE DEAD MANS WIFE LIKE IT WAS NO BIG DEAL! You're really trying to defend that egomaniac but trust me I got plenty of shit like this, I can go back and forth all day long with you. Keep trying me

    • Rabbi Herschel Lieberman-Bergblattstein
Rabbi Herschel Lieberman-Bergblattstein 2 months ago

@Cloud Strife Firstly, it was 42 "children" he smote with a plague of bear, not 17. Secondly, the word "child" is used throughout the Bible to disparagingly refer to immature or delinquent men, not just actual children. (For example, King David's rebellious son Absalom, who attempted to overthrow his father, is referred to as a "child" during the account of the civil war despite him having three sons and a daughter.) God sent bears to defend His messenger from a gang of young hoodlums who were harassing him. (Some people will argue that the verb translated as "rending" or "mauling" is also used to describe the breaking up of an object or disruption of a group of people, but I don't think that makes much difference. Even if the bears didn't kill all the thugs, they presumably killed some of them.)

    • Cloud Strife
Cloud Strife 2 months ago +1

@Rabbi Herschel Lieberman-Bergblattstein yeah god was definitely trying to save those 17 kids he murdered with 2 bears in 2 Kings for calling an old man bald 😂

I never understood the obsession with pushing Doritos and Mt. Dew as "gaming" food. They're quite possibly the worst food and drink you could have while gaming. You're going to get Dorito dust all over your controller or in between your keys, and if you spill Dew on anything, it'll be sticky FOREVER. Not to mention soda really isn't that great at hydrating you. Just have some water on hand, and unless you're diabetic or hypoglycemic, you really shouldn't need snacks within arms reach at all times. Just get up and make a sandwich or something if you need to.

Zoe Quinn is a name I'd rather not hear for the rest of my life. For the amount of attention she's gotten for being shitty and around shitty people, being protected and attacked by more shit, she's wildly successful. Wildly successful to the point of having started like 5 projects and never finishing them, "worked on" 3 other games in who knows what capacity, and got grief-funded 80K.
What an example to push forward into the light as a "game developer". Because she was a victim (legitimately). she was showered with attention and praise, yet in actual reality she led a shitty life and stoked shitty people like herself on the internet. "Gamers" and "gaming" will always be a dumpster fire because of people like her.

18:31 This is such a good, short, and sweet way to come back at those that complain about women in the game's industry. Men, by virtue of being men, get to be looked upon only by their sheer skill yet somehow it's different for women and when women are talked about it's suddenly about their bodies and "how pretty they are", yet men don't get that same treatment? Having a vagina doesn't change that game programming is a mental task first and foremost and all that matter is... your skills as a programmer, which all come from the brain :O People who try to make women game programmers all about their bodies, don't know how game programming works in the first place. You live and die by the standard of your programming, nothing more. Looks won't help you to program better.

Honestly, I think you were on to something with the idea of “Gamers” doing the reality show challenges. Let the devs do their jobs and have the “Gamers” complete to give their teams advantages that could help in development like extra time or something. That way you could represent game development fairly faithfully and have your teacup shallow “entertainment” on the side.

I know... There's still so much potential here. You can make it reality, but less Hell's Kitchen/Jersey Shore, and more Great British Baking show, or Forged in Fire.

Low stakes TV, with lots of fun ideas! We don't need to see the negative side of game development, it should be a positive and constructive environment. You can have prizes, but should be something useful: like a workstation with a 10-year subscription to Autodesk and Adobe software.

You can still throw in a few fun twists and surprises, like: you have to make a game using only Quxiel Megascans, start as teams of 2, then 4, 6, and finally, 10 to make bigger show-stopping projects.

And for the season finale, you have to make an old school game that works on an N64 or Sega Genesis emulator. Then bring in James Rolfe as a guest judge! So much potential...

Gamergate’s a pretty sad tale to me. A massive movement advocating for integrity in games journalism getting hijacked by opportunistic psychopaths like Sargon of Akkad and Ethan Ralph has actually led to games journalism becoming more corrupt and political. Just goes to show that any movement advocating for ethics, morals, human rights or integrity eventually draws in the devil’s minions and ends up making the situation if not the world a worse place.

Heres a list of movements advocating for better standards that devolved into crazy people using it as an excuse to hurt others: The National-Socialist movement of Germany, Lenin’s soviet revolution, Occupy Wall Street, Antifa, BLM, Gamergate (duh), The Taliban (This one is also a strike against America and the EU since we’re the ones that armed them against Soviet Russia and then betrayed them), Al-Quada (Pretty much the same story as before), ISIS (Pretty much just a result of decades of warfare against the other two), The MAGA movement, The Proud Boys, the LGBTQ+ (the movement itself doesnt really do anything too malicious but many of the crazier, loud majority types from here latch on to other movements and eventually turns them into extremists) , so on and so forth. Our parents were taught that we’d be living in a futuristic, cosmopolitan wonderland of a world by now, but our grandparents voted in this bleak world whether due to naivety or greed. I want to believe that humanity is diplomatically capable of talking out our differences without resorting to needless acts of violence, destruction and bloodshed, but that remains to be seen. Hopefully it’ll come about before we’re living in a dystopian cyberpunk nightmare where corporate advertisements that hound you all day every day are included in the 500 brain implants we’ll be required to have to work in some soulless corporate environment, but I wouldnt put my money on it. As long as we still live under archaic forms of government and economics created by men that have been dead for hundreds to thousands of years, Greed, Violence and Prejudice will continue to possess otherwise-rational and moral people that are too scared to leave their political echo chambers and have a respectful conversation with someone else that has a different point of view. I typically think of the internet and the luxuries of communication, information and entertainment it brings as a blessing, but it’s cursed us back into scared, paranoid tribes that hate what they dont understand.

@Gotta Proxy One person making a decision that’s unfair and may demonstrate foul play doesn’t mean that people entirely unrelated are also in a conspiracy. You need evidence to prove conspiracy.

If the Uzbek Olympic bobsled team is caught coating their sled in butter, that doesn’t mean you get to blindly say that an amateur bobsledding team in the United States is also cheating.

As a game dev myself I would like to say this is horrendous.

I find it immensely funny that every game dev was super professional and shot down all the reality TV BS at every point

Man, I'm jealous of how nice these people are.
I'd have tried to beat up that son of a bitch if he kept trying to pushing me like that.
I'd give him his story, and he'd be watching it from the hospital. See if he still tries that shit again, then.

“Jon, Joe, and Tom got drunk and had a sleepover at Jon’s parents’ house.”

That definitely sounds like something Jon would do. XD

I remember seeing clips of that sleepover on Joe's top 10 controversies video back in 2014. Everyone was drunk and trying to forget the whole day.

This seems like the plot of an old unfinished Simpsons episode mocking the invasion of corporate agenda into something that eventually ruins everything

I think you hit the nail on the head. That pepsico rep clearly thought he was working with random people pulled off the street with nothing much to lose (like on the bachelor). Instead he got a group of people who are all PR and media professionals for a living and all have their own brand on the line.

On paper that sounds awesome. I personally have heard of most of the TheXvidrs in the mix and would find it interesting. Why waste and make it a game show? If you will have it go more to a game show tell the youtubers that's what you want and they can make an interesting show because it's sorta their business. With the Dev making the games. Idgi

Man that was a blast from the past.. still vividly remember all the Co.Optional talk about it... Mattis only smart move back then was that he didn´t try to screw with Dodger because then he would have been manhunted by Jessie Cox and TB
