  • Here's 5 Things We Learned vs Wolves in the 1-0 victory in the Third Round FA Cup replay at Old Trafford.
    PATREON LINK; bit.ly/HowsonPatreon
One goal from Juan Mata was enough to see Man Utd progress into the Fourth Round after a magical finish from the Spanish midfielder. Although, it wasn't all easy - Wolves had a goal disallowed in the first half after VAR showed there was a handball in the build-up.
Marcus Rashford also came on as a substitute but was forced off due to injury. Not ideal, especially with Liverpool on Sunday. Will he be fit, let's hope so...
Finally, a special mention to the full-backs Brandon Williams and Aaron Wan-Bissaka who performed brilliantly and kept both Neto and Adama Traore quiet.

White Mata 🤭. The white players suck. Period! That's what I've learned. Jones is staying unbelievable! Ashley Young sucks probably deserves to be released, he got converted. Maybe Jones should be converted into a goal keeper or water boy. Most of the players that have been released by united, find greener pastures, they flourish outside this garbage. The problem with this team is racism, how can a central midfielder like Pogba be expected to score goals every match day, he's a number 6 for goodness sake. It's funny how united legends go red in the face when talking about players like Pogba, they never wanted him there even sir Alex hated him. He wouldn't have left on a free had they wanted him there.

I still think we could take 3rd and win the UEFA Cup. Said it at the beginning of the season, doubted it the other month but now we’re not far off 4th, starting to string a few wins together, players starting to play well. If we can get a midfielder (Fernandes?) this month we’ve got a good chance of taking 4th it not 3rd and maybe fluking a semi or two. 😉

Mata played well and found himself between the lines so many times, very open. Unfortunately none of our other midfielders could pass forward to find him. Fred makes up for Matic a lot when they play together and Matic takes 3 or 4 touches which allows the opponent to close those gaps. Like you said, Matic did cover Williams well but the forward play from midfield was poor. Hopefully a new midfield will rectify that!

Mata has never been quick. Managing a player? No. Wha'ts to be over stood is Mata needs regular games in a clear method of play. Mata in the Wolves team would be lethal. Why because they are very well drilled and have a clear patterns of play in and out of position.

Wolves have proven to be a tough fixture for us since Nuno and their recent promotion , they seem to have our number of late , so its a bonus to progress against them in a cup where we have a half chance of making a run. This one in particular was not very exciting but they are simply a tough opponent for us wherever we play them. Part of that could be both squads' strengths are on the counter, Nuno's having figured us out for the most part, and the make-up of Wolves squad in general is just a tough one to handle. For me our fullbacks to me were the highlight of this match , they handled the wide threats over and over which were Wolves' primary attempts at hurting us yesterday. Brandon and AWB were fearless , never stopped running , nullified their width many times and put in very solid performances. Mata and Matic have both been contributing of late but the key with them is the type of match and their legs kept fresh. Mata in particular is the best technical player at the club but he struggles when he plays numerous matches in succession and is more useful in matches we dominate possession and Nemanja also needs a lot of rest coupled with simplified duties and deployed against the right sort of opposition. I wouldn't have been bothered if both left the club in the summer but both players currently have their uses with our injuries and our board wouldn't have replaced them anyway.
And our injuries , this is concerning , I would solely blame Ole but this issue seems to go back even years before he came ; have to look at the physios, training , training methods, and the medical staff. But also of course lack of depth has left it tough to keep players properly rotated , rested and fit. My issue with Ole with injuries is I just think he is a bit careless in dealing with them. Jose had a lot of injuries and would publicly slate you when injured but in general he didn't play footballers with potentially serious injuries (he basically carried Fellaini off the pitch for example). Ole played Scott for 45 mins after his injury which could have worsened it , Maguire played through injury which luckily wasn't as serious but also was not rested in the subsequent games as a precaution , Rashy kept being run out at the end of last season when he was clearly injured and against Wolves should not have been risked while carrying an injury considering how vital he has been for us all season. We need more depth but Ole needs to exercise a bit more caution when dealing with injuries.

    • Andrew K
      Andrew K 2 months ago +1

@Jimbob Jun lack of squad depth is definitely part of it , if you don't have the options to rest and rotate without taking major risks in terms of quality then your primary players are going to be overly fatigued and potentially more susceptible to injury. Although I also question some of the methodology , a lot of the more progressive and technical managers do most of the drill work (including endurance drills) with the ball so you can actually get more than simply physical benefits from a particular drill and could actually achieve more with less in most instances. I've read and heard thats not really the case with Ole , he does a lot of pure running and stamina work separately and with how disjointed we usually look in possession / on the ball I am assuming at the expense of the more technical ball work. Also, managers have to know when to give the lads a rest , some gaffers give a full day off after matches and make sure to manage the training load during the season with recovery in mind ; I'm not totally sure on Ole's policies with that.
But in terms of actually taking risks with footballers playing with / through injury i think you have to weigh the benefits on a case by case basis. Through a grueling season (especially a PL season) most everyone will play with some niggles and have to tough it out at times , that is understandable. But on the other hand if a player is clearly injured in what may be a serious one , and evidently showing obvious discomfort on the pitch , if possible it makes sense to take him off and not play through it like Scott was forced to through knee ligament damage for a whole additional half of play which may have worsened it. Maguire was forced to play through his recent knock and was lucky not to have missed more time because of it and playing Norwich of all clubs next we should have been able to cope with resting him for precautionary reasons for the following match. Rashford has been on top form lately , clearly our biggest goal threat atm and so vital to us in general ; if he is carrying possibly multiple injuries you leave him off completely imo. I just think with injuries Ole is sort of too old school for me and needs to use more caution for the sake minimizing the frequency and in some cases the severity of injuries.

    • Jimbob Jun
Jimbob Jun 2 months ago +1

The injurys and squad depth is where I get annoyed, not because Ole plays people after they've suffered injurys because thats actually pretty common (darren fletcher is the one that comes to mind, in an interview he did he spoke about playing when he could only run in a straight line and kick the ball with his opposite foot). It annoys me because it was painfully obvious in preseason that high intensity tactics combined with paper thin squad was a potential major problem for the season.

  • Daniel Crowe
Daniel Crowe 2 months ago +14

De Gea's the man, but at what stage do you look at the other guy and go, but he's playing better? And clearly so. He's providing more confidence to the back 4 potentially, he's there to pick up the ball when it goes long over the top, meaning that lindelof isn't having to give you a heart attack by trying to wrestle the attacker 1 on 1 for 30 yards towards the box and losing the fight! Happens so often with him, and it'd be a huge difference if the keeper came out for it, which De Gea doesn't do enough.
For the time being I'd be putting Sergio in there. Brilliant shot stopper and more dominant. De Gea needs to get back a position of being angry and demanding his position back, by showing it on the pitch, which is what Sergio's doing everytime he's out there.
Defensively we aren't great. We need a boss in goal. Sergio is that. I think we've gone passed accepting a merit system.

    • Darck Clay
      Darck Clay 2 months ago

I absolutely agree. But might be slightly more unpopular because I've felt this way for the past 2 seasons. I'm honestly been tired of De Gea about to leave every transfer league for the past 5 years. I feel if he doesnt want to be there best to cash out while he still has a contract. 80mil+ is a great price for your keeper when you have Romero as a backup. Romero is a great keeper!!! He always does so well in the smaller cups we put him in and I'm always dissapointed when he works so hard, gets us to the finals, then is replaced by De Gea for the final matches.

Matic has been overcriticised. We need to understand what his real role is and stop expecting him to be knocking long through balls. @1000 subscribers with no videos For the past two summers de Gea has been liked out of United. While I don't see it happening soon, I can see de Gea moving for a big(ger) money contract with Real or PSG. I don't recall Romero ever being liked out of United. He even snubbed a move away after the Argentina manager said he needed regular first team football to remain in the squad. Romero seems very happy at United.
