Venus of Hohle Fels (2009)

  • A carved female figurine dating to at least 35,000 years ago has been recovered from caves in the Hohle Fels region of Germany. The figure represents the oldest figurative art yet discovered. In this film the authors describe the importance of their find.

    The European Aurignacian and later Gravettian figurative representations form part of the so called "Transitional Period" and fall within a natural state of liminality. What we are seeing in these Aurignacian figures is a process of transferring symbolic belief and ritual from one group to another. Neanderthals of northwestern Europe had been practicing the same symbolic behaviour tens of thousands of years prior to our arrival on the scene. Figurines from the Aurignacian period are likely to be Cro-magon mans interpretation of a Neanderthal symbolic practice. We are not as clever as we think we are, we simply inherited a long symbolic tradition from Neanderthals. To be continued.....

    Interesting ...I think what I have found is also very old I think so sir.. we broken a big stone and we found in the middle of inside the stone stutue like sheep or lion is , it's amazing. ..can I send you pictures please...I don't know where to concerned

    When you say ,,,the earliest figurative art do you mean the human figuee,,,or do you mean the earliest representational art, Because if the latter then surely the Stadel Lion Man is the earliest If the former then OK, Would appreciate response
