This was about dead on for the way many Scottish people talk. It instantly reminded me of an old Robin Williams routine about drinking and the sport of golf. In the routine he says, "And if you want a real linguistic adventure, go drinking with a Scotsman. Because you can barely fuckin' understand them before."

I can actually understand quite a bit lmfao. But I’m sure if it came through the low quality communications headphones, fighting to hear it against the roar of the plane’s engines, I doubt I’d be able to make heads or tails of what the heck the Scottish guy is telling me lmfao

Welshman here and I've never had a problem with thick Scottish accents but I have an 87 year old Scottish, Whisky drinking Grandfather and I think I just got used to Scottish drunk gibberish at an early age. The Scots are definitely the funniest Brits.
The guy doing the Welsh accent was shocking. He can do a passable Nick Offerman but a massive fail on the Welsh

Moral of the story, the Americans are a bunch of closet racist dicks. They can't insult the black man, the Jew, the Asian, or the Muslim anymore so they are desperate to find others to suffer their racism. Gone are the days they could put on hoods and set fire to crosses. Now they claim what they are doing somehow isn't racist! SNL are totally left wing hypocrites. That pathetic show is just not funny to anyone else but left-wing Americans.

Read where one of the SNL writers said they worked with James to write this skit so that his friends back home would understand but no one else LOL

Okay, so I'm actually Scottish and demonstrably so (you can hear my voice on the videos on my channel). Many Scots don't have strong accents and James McAvoy is one of them (I worked on a film that he was in and have talked to him personally) and I don't have a strong accent either. He's clearly been away from Glasgow for a long time. In this skit, his accent isn't strong at all, it's the words he's using that cause confusion. And realistically no one would use those words to communicate with international pilots.
"There's no a tick-tock for monikers, big man. I know you're comin' on all peely-wally up there, but I'm gonnae hiv to..." etc. Peely-wally is a lowland Scots phrase meaning wan or pale-looking. It's quite an odd thing to say as he can't see the person he's talking to and you'd never apply it to an object. I guess they were just trying to shoehorn in as many odd words and phrases as they could.
Kate McKinnon's accent starts off pretty well. Her first sentence is pretty flawless and I could mistake her for a mildly-accented Scot. But from the second line onwards, her accent just falls apart and wouldn't fool a native for a second. In her second line, listen to the way she says 'very' and 'down'. That's not remotely like any kind of Scottish accent. By the end of the sketch when she's trying to say 'Can you look out the window?', it just isn't anything. Her character should have said "Can ye look oot the windae?" but we get "Can you look eht the windy?" and later "Ate the windy." She may be a versatile comedic actress, but this is beyond her. She should have gone for a milder accent that she could keep under control. But yeah, that first line is perfect.
Nice try, SNL, but it's about as realistic as when you play at French.
Oh and the attempt at Welsh is nonsense. The Welsh language is tricky and impossible for outsiders to understand, but they don't use it for air traffic control. Scotland also has the Gaelic language, but very few people speak it and McAvoy clearly isn't one of them. Myself, I only know enough to get a few minutes into a conversation.
If you want to hear actual Scottish people speaking in relatively genuine accents in an air-flight setting, look up videos of Alan Cumming and Forbes Masson in The High Life. Both are from further north than Glasgow and are playing caricatures, but they both exhibit genuine accents.
