I live in Northern California, but have a friend who works in an ER in Southern California, and her anecdotal findings are corroborated with this data that John so graciously has taken the time to explain here. You sir, have been a beacon of light during this whole pandemic, I haven't missed an episode, yet. Thank you for doing 40x the work of any of our health "officials" in keeping the public updated day to day on the status of the virus, treatments, and vaccines. I'm planning a trip end of summer to England, and would love to bump into you just to shake your hand and say thank you in person. Odds are against it, I'm sure, but one can dream...

Great analysis, Dr Campbell. I've also been wondering over the past year or so why almost all vaccine manufacturers decided to make vaccines that only target the spike protein, which we know is very prone to changing its shape between variants and hence making vaccine-derived immunity less effective. It seems too sloppy of an oversight for people who are supposed to be heads of scientific authority. The most likely explanation for me is that it likely was done for the sake of profits, so that with each new variant, there'd be a need for boosters and hence more vaccine doses ordered by the richer countries. I am yet to see a better explanation.
It's great to see more data on cross-protection too, which reinforces what we've known to be the case for a while now. There have been studies as early as 2020 that showed that T-cells from people who donated blood way before the pandemic were already reacting to SARS-CoV-2, and in summer 2021 there was a good study that showed that the cross-reactivity was due to the similar epitopes (parts of the antigenic proteins) that were preserved across many respiratory viruses. So this stuff was already quite well-known at least half a year ago but the media was silent about it.

I like my good news the same way I like my bad news: told me directly, concisely, and thoughtfully like an adult. Thanks as always, Doc.

My husband tested positive in Dec. 2021. He was symptomatic, but he survived without any interventions. He did end up with a severe infection in the sinus cavity, but was treated with antibiotics. I just tested positive last week. I do have some symptoms, but I feel like I've felt worse when I've caught the flu. My husband was over due for his booster. I had had my booster one week before I tested positive. The main difference between our symptoms was a headache. My husband suffered a severe headache for days. I did not. So when/if CoVid ends and we no longer require this type of information, I hope that John has his own TheXvid channel to discuss medicine in the most logical, clearest and unbiased format that he has since the beginning of this virus. He has been the absolute best person to listen to throughout this pandemic. Hi John, quick note: The data you had was from "RAI", which is a testing location here in Amsterdam. Amsterdam is the main outbreak location of Omicron so the rest of the country might be lagging a bit.

I am 70. My husband is 80. Live in Northern California. This was a particularly uplifting episode! Thank you. 8 days ago our two best friends tested positive. They were lucky enough to have an at-home test kit from a few months back. We had just had dinner with them the night before. The woman thought she might be catching a light cold a new decided to test herself as she was scheduled for a haircut the next day. Shockingly it was positive so, of course, she postponed the appointment. She said she felt fine and she showed no physical symptoms. The next day her husband didn’t feel to good and decided he should test also. Positive of course. He also felt some light cold symptoms but not at all debilitating. All four of us have been vaccinated and boosted. I don’t know anybody more cautious about mask wearing and social distancing than this couple. But now we felt like we had both been exposed so my husband wanted to get tested. Of course you can’t find at-home test kits anywhere for any amount of money. So he made an appointment that our country has open for testing. He couldn’t get an appointment until two days after he called and he won’t be getting his results until 3 to 5 days after that. There were a couple of days when we didn’t feel so well, but that passed quickly. I would like to have been tested but what’s the point by the time I find out it will have all been over. If my husbands test comes back positive then I will assume I will have had it to. How could I not?
People who leave comments all say the most wonderful things about you and all of the wonderful information you have been graciously providing for us for the last two years. I absolutely agree. Question: Though nothing's for certain and no one wants to take unneccesary risks, would a person who contracts the omicron variant actually be better off in terms of antibody protection than those who haven't gotten it? I ask this assuming that said person is fully vaccinated and has not had any other form of Covid 19. My "bottom line" question is, would that omicron survivor be better prepared for any new or more virulent strains of Covid that might come along in the future?

Thank you for your well balanced overview of the newest literature. Finally we face a milder variant. I watch your shows with great interest, especially because it’s hard to keep up to date with the great number of studies published.
One comment regarding the RIVM graphs you use though. You are right about how the reality is far more positive than the predictions by the RIVM (you can’t blame them, in hindsight), but you might want to have a look at the second graph you show. What you see in that graph are the predictions for different measures taken (curfew only, lockdown start at Christmas break or after). The Dutch government decided to start the lockdown before Christmas break, that model is not shown in the graph. That explains partially why the numbers are so much better than predicted in this graph.

Professor Sunetra Gupta said from the very beginning of the pandemic that there was strong reason to believe that there would be good cross immunity provided by exposure to previous corona viruses. She has been proven to be right about pretty much everything she has talked about over these past two years. Too bad more people in decision making positions didn’t listen to her.

In Australia and my dad became positive two days ago. He is 83, has asthma and had pneumonia three times before along with other co-morbidities so needless to say I was freaking out.
He was admitted to hospital the same day and was out the next. Is back home and while it has really knocked him on his butt, he is doing much better than I feared.
I really hope omicron is the gift to end this insanity that we all needed.

A great channel for up-to-date, competent, and accessible information on COVID. I follow it regularly. Here is something I thought could be added today. Actually, it is not strange that the vaccines included but the spike. As a rule, subunit vaccines produce antibody responses but not significant T-cell responses. Live virus vaccines produce T cells but overall vaccinology has focused on the antibody responses as eliciting protective T cell responses is tricky (one reason we still have no HIV vaccine). Moreover, the philosophy underlying the vaccines is that antibodies protect from infection (especially mucosally secreted ones) while cytotoxic T cells clean up and heal the established infection. Starting with these premises when an urgent vaccine is needed based on a new technology probably it is perceived as relatively less risky to bet on what we know works for sure. Luckily, mRNA vaccines proved to induce also good T-cell responses so now it is time to think of including the other antigens in the next generations of these vaccines. Of, course, we have to steer away from proteins that are known to interfere with the functions of the cell (like orf6, nsp13, N, etc.) or include maimed versions to provide only a set of epitopes.

Hello John I'm in Greece and I have found your views extremely helpful!! My mum 95 was sick with covid in may 2021 she has a lot of underlying conditions (half of her right lung is destroyed probably due to cancer) she was unvaccinated due to serious allergies. Her 02 dropped to 87 and was supposed to go to hospital. Thanks to her cardiologist she remained at home was given 02 and medication she overcame the illness she is fine. Her doctor told us that the chances of her surviving hospitalization were very slim., due to hospital infections. My daughter and I got covid 14 days ago omicron? Both unvaccinated had a slight temperature for 24 hours and nothing else. Took vitamin d3 and zinc. Your videos were very helpful and were in sync with my doctor who told me not to panic and that this is a virus that will pass!! Many thanks!!

Hello Dr. John! Thank you for your amazingly straight forward and real commentary on this situation. Can I ask what you meant when you spoke about the vaccines that used the whole dead virus, saying that they're not really stimulating the T cells in the way you'd like them to? I've had this type of vaccine in the past and I'd prefer to stick with it for any further boosters. Are they not effective? Any information would be great, thank you :)

It was always known that natural immunity was stronger and lasted longer. Why this recognition by international health authorities only now? The delay in divulging the scientific truth does not testify to credibility or competence, quite the contrary. However much goodwill one has, it is very difficult to trust and the logic presented by those who are now called "conspirators" is much more reliable. Institutions are indeed in crisis.

My daughter and I were positive for Covid (presumptively delta) the first two weeks of September. We both appear to have contracted omicron now (presumptively). For the rest of the household, they had pretty severe cold or flu like symptoms, but my daughter and I have had some minor sniffles, a tickle in our throat and low grade fever but we also had a lot of gastrointestinal issues this go around and I have had pretty bad headaches. It’s mostly just discomfort, nausea, and extreme loss of appetite. Has there been any information about omicron causing gastrointestinal problems? Or has it something to do with reinfection? I remember reading, probably a year ago, with other variants that often gastrointestinal issues equaled more severe Covid so I’m just wanting to make sure that I don’t need to prepare for a severe decline in my kiddos or my health. We don’t feel great but it’s not that bad. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this or if this is common or are we odd ones out?

As usual, a data driven, no drama, informational video. I am an Educational Aid in an elementary school in the US. Omicron has slammed our district. We are all vaccinated, a requirement, and most of us are triple vaccinated. More students are also getting vaccinated. People are miserable when they are sick, but so far, as reported, there hasn't been severe disease among the cases and as of yet, non has required hospitalization. Maybe some hope out there? It sounds like there is some encouraging data. It makes me hopeful. 😁 Just have to wait and see. Thank you for your posts.

The question for me now is, with the significantly reduced severity of Omicron, and the data being presented on natural immunity, at what stage is a thorough cost benefit analysis of vaccination v non-vaccination required for children and adults under the age of 40, especially where no high risk factors are at play? And, if we are now at the stage where this is a genuine question that needs addressing, can supposed liberal democracies still justify COVID-19 vaccine passports and the elimination of the unvaccinated from large aspects of everyday society?

Based on this I am coming to the opinion that once I have had a bout of Omicron, this pandemic will be essentially over for me. Why are we still practicing social distancing? It is time to get Omicron, there is no certainty that a future variant will be as benign.

Having to ignore the programmed hate of public my early conclusions are bearing the test of time. Hence, I trust what you present because it is in line with my digging.
