If Coltrane was canonized, so should Wayne be - for the solo on "Aja" alone! I was shocked to see him like this, he has looked much healthier in some recent performances. You listen to something like "Emanon" (which isn't even his best work, in my opinion!) - and then something that someone like Kamasi Washington is trying to do, and they're not even in the same stratosphere...

I saw Wayne at Carnegie Hall a few years back for Ron Carter's 70'th birthday celebration. It was mind blowing to see the legend(s) in action. He is truly one of my heros. Weather Report was the greatest band in history. His song from Heavy Weather, "Palladium", is still my favorite song in all of music. IN ALL OF MUSIC!! It is incredible to see him win this award at this stage of his career...
...and it is also sad. This clip is exactly why I stopped giving a damn about the grammys many years ago. What Wayne does and has done IS REAL MUSIC. This award show is garbage. Real music isn't allowed to breathe and live. Classical, world beat, fusion, jazz.. all of the genre's where theory, thought, creativity, knowledge of both one's self and instrument, are blatantly disrespected!! Fuck Kanye, and all of the other pop acts. They "sample" from the masters and call themselves "geniuses" when they are really just parasites and leeches.
The music industry should have rallied together to get these artist the national/international respect they deserve much in the same way that actors banded together to get tech awards shown live in prime time during the Oscars. @Tyrone Smith is exactly right, the world needed to see this.. not just a half empty theatre.. Half empty because the pop stars of the world can't pay respect to the true creators.

My god this man deserves this award. For the last 60 years he has been letting out some of the most amazing music this world has ever seen, and his genius has never even gotten close to escaping his work. He is now 85 and his quartet is one of the most phenomenal bands I have ever seen play in my life. I dream of the day that the people of this world will begin to cherish this kind of music rather than the so-called β€œmusic” some of them listen to today. God bless this man, and his everlasting genius.

Can't help but feel sad to see him in this condition. . . one of the few surviving Jazz titans. When I became curious about Jazz back in the late 70's, his recording JuJu was one of my first purchases. I bought it because I liked the cover art and when I heard the music, I couldn't wait to hear more ! All these decades later, His Blue Note recordings and the second Miles Davis quintet remain some of my very favorite music.
