I discovered Derek when i was diagnosed with cancer and had to go through rough chemo treatments in the hospital. Did not matter how sick, or tired, or in pain i was... Karl could make me laugh. I was already a huge fan of him, but the sweetness of the Derek character and the hilarity of Karl really helped me.

'Derek' is an absolute work of genius, mixing comedy with emotion in a style that I have personally never seen before. Never has a show made you want to laugh so much you cry, yet cry with enough resonance to forget why you were even laughing. Work of art.

    • Proper

But both the comedy and emotional parts are done in a very obvious, ham-fisted, cookie-cutter kind of way. It's not done in a clever, creative or subtle way.

I love Ricky Gervais when he does COMEDY. When heโ€™s trying his fucking hardest to bum his audience out - which is basically what Derek and After Life are all about - I get much less interested. Iโ€™m not watching Ricky Gervais to be sad for the rest of the day.
Not saying that tender or thoughtful moments have no place in comedy but he lays it on a bit thick at times. The Office and Extras mostly struck the right balance, at least. Maybe Iโ€™m wrong but I reckon Steve must have had a moderating influence on Rickyโ€™s tendency for depression.

@Neon Sashimi Dream He reminds me of a really "out there" hippie, but without the constant dosing of acid to fuel such ideas. And it's way more entertaining to hear such ramblings when it's spoken with the slightly annoyed with everything Baltimore dialect rather than the shrieky and everything I say is the most glorious thing ever Californian american.

    • Neon Sashimi Dream

@Fyrecide I don't think Karl is actually simple. I think he's just different. He has a different way of seeing the world and a different way of seeing himself. Because of that, it seems to lead to both lazy and imaginative thinking on certain subjects that makes him seem like he's unable to grasp simple connections between things. But I don't think that he's unable to grasp them. I think he just has his reasons for looking at things in the way he does and I think, in many cases, he chooses to see them that way. He's clearly a very smart person and a very talented actor and dancer. Some of his ideas seem asinine and hilarious but other ones are rather profound.

Ricky Gervais is the best thing to happen to comedy in decades ! The term โ€œgeniusโ€ is overused nowadays but Gervais โ€œisโ€ a comic genius, writer, director. I love everything heโ€™s done. Itโ€™s all original and entertaining. I mean seriously, compare a series like Derek to the overrated, boring American series like โ€œThe Big Bangโ€, a show that needs a laugh track literally going off every five seconds minimum. Thank you Ricky Gervais.

Derek is an absolutely exquisite work of art. I wish I had known of it sooner, but treasure it as an all-time favorite. It touches on nerves that are becoming numb with too much of the world, but brings a sweet view of true human feelings that need to be felt by all, and honors simple dignity and eloquence, in a wonderfully funny and poignant manner. Thank you, Ricky!!!

I'd only seen about 1 or 2 episides of this series until a friend of mine gave me the series box set, series 1 and 2, and I cannot put into as many words as I would like just how much I love everything that Ricky Gervais does, this man is an absolute brilliant writer and director. This series has dragged me through every emotion I ever thought I could have in a half hour. I dont know how he does this. I feel like he reached into my heart and ripped it out. emotionally wonderful series, and the character Derek Brilliant, and in case you havent watched Afterlife, thats a must too. How wonderful it would be to work on one of Ricky's sets! must be the ultimate fun.

Recently we had to find a care home for my Father-in-law. My only experience of such a place was from watching Derek. After viewing 4 or 5 I was wishing I'd find a home like the one in Derek; with someone as committed and caring as Hannah, with a live-in 'friend for all' like Derek...and, in comparison with some of the awful places we visited, I'd even put up with Kevin.
