If you have a mill, why do you use a hand grinder to de-scale, and then a sander to flatten? Serious question. It just seems like it could have been done easier and better with a mill.

At the risk of looking stupid...I'm finally going to ask. When they hit the knife with the hammer, there'a a bit of metal that flakes off. Is that some sort of build up that happens during heating or is it steel that is coming off...and they are loosing material as a result for the knife?

I really want to make a knife. Last summer I made a forge the melt aluminum to make castings and such, but I wanted to Smith a knife, so I black smithed some rebar into a pare of tongs, but as I did so I realized my forge barly got the sleet hot enough to turn red. My dad recently got ahold of alot of tools and machines used for metal work, one of which being an oven, so I will finally be able to go through the heat treating process. One question I have is if I just angle grind the shape out of some flat stock (which I know is way less cool and fun than black smithing it into shape) will there be and difference in performance compared to a black smithed blade, given that I heat treat it the same?

Artu multi purpose drill bits. Roughly $9.00 a piece. I couldn't believe that they drill through drill bits. I'm making an file knife. No annealing. Bits went through when no other drill bit would. High speed no lube. Good job btw!

Alec get some Bosch multi construction drill bits ( blue ones) carbide tipped and quite cheap , recently used them to drill 6mm pin holes in some 1095 Damascus that I accidently work hardened with some rubbish drill bits "oops" but trust me they will fly through 01 and they are cheap enough to pickup a box :)

  • Feliqus
    Feliqus 11 months ago +3

Hey Alec, check this out. This is the data sheet for a very common O1 tool steel, it shows what hardness you get at a specific cooling speed. I suggest going for something below 300 HV, so you would need to cool your steel down from 800°c to around 600°c in roughly 5 min. Your cooling speed was probably way too fast. Maybe put it in the forge together with a block of steel. Slower is always better ;)

Why are you using so much O-1 steel in your work lately? I've always found it to be, and heard the same from other smiths, that it is quite red-short and prone to cracking. What's your secret?

    • Chris R
      Chris R 11 months ago

Jake Cashion My hunch is it's the most easily accessible and cost effective tool steel for him. With that comes familiarity with the material, and familiarity with it allows a smith to really maximize the properties of the steel.
I think O1 is a poor choice for a bushcraft knife, too. S7 and L6 would be better tool steels (especially because L6 is basically idiot proof to treat and harder to kill than a Terminator), or even something like 440C, or if we're really bold, 4140. Maximum HRc value isn't the only metric that should be, for example, we should take into account that eventually the knife will have to be sharpened, and some steels are a colossal pain to field sharpen.

    • jay warrell
      jay warrell 11 months ago

Chris R all I know is I can wrap it around a pencil, and i want to make rings out of it

    • Chris R
      Chris R 11 months ago

Chances are you can't harden it through heat treating anyway, so that combined with zinc fumes would suggest "not a great idea". Unless you're certain it's a high carbon steel within, it's probably going to be less than 0.3% and won't harden to a degree you'd detect without lab equipment, even in a water quench with an attempted cryo treatment.

    • Timothy S.
      Timothy S. 11 months ago +1

jay warrell you should never try to use galvanized steel in a forge or high temps, they end up giving off toxic fumes
