The game saw three goals in a fifteen minute spell. Roberto Baggio opened the scoring after a rare mistake by England's goalkeeper Peter Shilton, in his final game before international retirement, presented a simple opportunity. A header by David Platt levelled the game 10 minutes later but Schillaci was fouled in the penalty area five minutes later, leading to a penalty. Schillaci himself got up to convert the kick to win him the tournament's Golden Shoe for his six goal tally and give the hosts third place. England had the consolation prize of the Fair Play award, having received no red cards and the lowest average number of yellows per match.

The only thing a third place playoff does is rub salt in a wound bad enough being a runner up win win win

No young player has ever said, "It's my dream to play in the third-place match at the World Cup." This game should be scrapped.

First time I’ve seen this!! That goal probably enhanced David Platts move to Italy. He was a great player for England!!

Any other England fans dropping by after the Croatia defeat to remember the last time we played in the third place playoff? Good old David Platt, what a header!

I'm sorry to hear that. I remember Bari being in Serie A in the mid 90s, which I watched on Football Italia on Channel 4; the San Nicola was an impressive arena. I remember Protti and Sandro Tovalieri, good strikers.

Same mistake from GK. Wondered elsewhere the same in qf 1986. But I feel it wasn't a Penal because there is no great clear Error

Schilachi had only Parker infront of him so he was in a good position to score. Plus Baggio was in a postion to score an open goal, and Schilachi could not pass it back to Baggio due to the foul. If this was scored ti would have been one of the best goals in the WC. Baggio brought the ball from the half way line.

From the angles in this video Parker definitely seems to kick Schillaci in the leg when Parker and Schillaci's relevant leg are just inside the box, so I cannot see any reason for doubt that there was a foul. I would need to check the rules to be sure, but I don't think the fact that Schillaci's trailing leg was still outside the box would make it a free kick because both the offending kick and the body part struck were inside the area.

should have been a penalty to Italy for Shilton's foul after he lost the ball but they scored anyway.

italy had scored the third one, Serena's header.. disallowed for some weird reasons though

Ture, it should have been in the highlights. The ref made a mistake and thought it was offside. Not the 1st Italian goal o be wrongly ruled offside in Italia 90. Nevertheless Italy won. Just hows how good they were. They deserved gold more than the 2006 team.

Can someone explain why a knockout football competition has a third place play-off? It's completely irrelevant..

Yes, and they need to give everything in that one. If they win, they have a chance in 2022. Lose, and I think Belgium is the team of the future.

Patel. Of course it is important... to win it! Italy and we in New Zealand know it. That is the difference between the winning and losing mentality.

peter shilton sucked.....his reaction in penalties sucked.....if England had a younger goalkeeper we would of been in the final in that world cup campaign....I mean the goal he gave up against west dermoany was a joke......basically a chip shot on a free kick.....what keeper gives that up....usually keepers can jump...but shilton was over weight.

joss sutton - As much as I loved Shilts - I've got to agree with that - his reactions and kicking were diminishing fast in his last couple of years before 1990. Same with Seaman before 2002.

Baz D No doubt he was a great keeper in his prime but he should've retired from international football after Mexico '86, there were better and younger keepers around in 1990.

paranormalfrank. Fucking idiot.... Shilton saved England time after time. You are judging him on a penalty shootout. How old are you? Did you even see him play? Through the seventies into the mid eighties he was without doubt the worlds premier keeper.😡😡😡😡

Are you kidding? The ball took a huge deflection off Paul Parker, it wasn't a chip shot at all.

Bill W He definitely should've retired from international football after Mexico '86, why on earth Bobby Robson persisted with him after a 5'5 guy outjumped him is a mystery

hoii he was finished by the start of the tournament! His fault for Germany’s deflected goal and actually, he was at fault in 86 for hand of god goal as he never got off the bloody ground!!!

    baggio is offside!

    • Dolkano
      Dolkano 4 months ago

@Sajida M why you say it's not a offside? of course it was clearly an offside

    • Sajida M
      Sajida M 4 months ago

      Nope
no offside. Shilton is a great keeper but he had no choice but to bring Baggio down. Plus when Baggio made the run he was not offside. Korea's first goal vs Germany this year was more offside.

Jonny Pryce my immediate thought too lol. Although to be honest that’s a penalty all day long for Shilton bringing him down after giving the ball away
