Airplane Medical Emergency | WE COULDN'T LAND! | Wednesday Checkup

  • Published on Jul 11, 2019
  • Well, this flight was exciting, to say the least! Luckily it was a learning experience for both me and Matt! Whenever you have an airplane medical emergency doctors do have an ethical but no legal obligation to help. After this event, I thought it might be nice to do a dedicated video to Airplane Medical Emergencies and in general what is expected of doctors and passengers. If you're game for that please let me know in the comments!
Thanks, Defranco for the shoutout! Check out his channel here:

There's also a large shortage of Epipens and they are very expensive. It's hard for even someone who needs one to afford/get one so more reason for airlines to carry them.

Is it true sleep cycles last 90 minutes? I read somewhere if u have to wake up for school or work or something to count from when you go to bed to when you wake up 90 minutes so you don’t wake up in the middle of a sleep cycle. So if you go to bed at 10pm and wake up at 8:30 you get 6 full sleep cycles. Saw this on Instagram and was wondering if this was true 🧐

I’m highly allergic to peanuts and one time the flight attendants handed out peanuts and water. Just having someone open the bag next to me caused my eyes to itch and my throat to start closing. Luckily I quickly took Benadryl and it seemed to calm it. I’ve had an anaphylactic reaction before so I know the feeling. Knowing airlines don’t have epipens makes the situation 10x worse. Don’t serve nuts when your not going to consider allergies, especially if you can’t treat the problem. Big yikes! Thank goodness you were there!

Oh my I can really sympathize with the passenger cuz I have many allergies and the swelling can be reeeeally scary ,I always cary an epi-pen around but I thankfully never needed it in an emergency, I usually know when I am beggining to have an allergic reaction and I tak an anti-histamine(Idk how to spell it🤣) But that story shows that airplanes need to have epi-pens on board, I can't imagine getting an allerguc reaction and not have anything around ,breathing already gets harder and I don't think fear helps at all! Thank you doctor Mike!!

Doctor Mike's Words at Face-Value: "You can develop an allergy to red meat - specifically a type of sugar molecule called alpha-gal, which is present in some mammals... Not humans, though! But anyway, [continues story]..."
Doctor Mike's 100% Intentional*** Sub-Text: "Ay, keep this on the DL, ya dig? But I'm just sayin' tho...if you happen to develop this allergy, there's a super simple remedy, which may or may not be - (but totally is) - cannibalism."
***Claim of "100% Intent" based upon reflexive inferences: as derived via the aggregate of bio-genetic coding and conglomerated neural-networks (i.e. the brain), wherein arises the illusory concept of sentience as perceived by, well..."me" - whatever that means.

I'm a flight attendant of a short flights company in Europe; its policy is that we have first aid kits on board, but we can use them just for ourselves crew (most of the passengers don't even know we have them) or for all the passengers in case of surviving crash or high-risk emergency (we have bandages in case of fractures, but also plasters, thermometer or paracetamol).
What's at the base of the rule is that although we have a medical training, so we can distinguish some of the illnesses according to their most common symptoms, we are not doctors: we haven't the degree that give us that knowledge and we can't be 100% sure about the disease, so we aren't allowed to give any medicines to the passengers. To give you an example, if they have an allergic reaction on board they must use the epi-pen on their own: we can't do that for them! We need to do a public announcement to ask if there is a doctor/nurse onboard (who must show us the medical ID or an ID where there is specified the job) and can administer medications (in the specific case of the allergic reaction, passengers are usually helped straight away by relatives or friends when they recognise the signs).
Another situation is the CPR: we must carry out the chest compressions and the rescue breaths until paramedics or doctors come onboard and declare the death. We aren't doctors so we haven't the knowledge we need to affirm that the passenger is dead and there's nothing we can do to help him.
Another thing is that the company doesn't want to have any problems nor risks to be taken to court, in case the passenger says that his conditions got worse after the medicine provided on board and given by cabin crew. I'm not allowed either (just to say something that might look stupid) to give to the passengers my personal basic food-stuffs (such as sugar, sweetener, salt), whenever it happens that we don't have it onboard because it's run out (it always happens with the sugar), in case they feel sick and accuse me/the airline of giving something expired or wasted.
We always have to ask lots of questions to the passengers, because they remember to tell us their illnesses, but they forget to come onboard with the epi-pen, GTN, inhaler, insulin,.....or they come on board already sick (headache, stomacache, indigestion,....) and they complain because it's impossible, incredible, ashamed, disgusting that we haven't medications for them: it's an aircraft, not the pharmacy of Doctor House!!!!
But I can understand your point of view: if the aircraft is provided with some of those medications our lives and journeys (of both passengers and flight attendants) would be easier!!!

I have had anaphylactic shock before. Not due to a tick, but an allergic reaction to aspirin and ibuprofen. Not fun at all. Very scary stuff. You pretty much feel like you are gonna die cause you literally can’t breath. The first time it happened my parents took me to the doctor and I got the shot. The second time it happened they just called the doctor and they had me eat crushed ice. It actually helped. Though I didn’t appreciate my dad mocking me gasping for wow. That’s not funny your daughter coulda died in front of you. I don’t think they get how serious it is.
