Don't you love in fifa when you think you have no time left to score a goal but the other team's defensive line is really high up and you're able to play a crazy throughball and score

With active and passive offside it has become more difficult to play with a high defense.

Germany usually uses high defensive line (when in possession and not) and high pressing. It is risky but very effective if it's executed properly.

I think the high defense line is bad. It's too risky. Spurs get caught by the high defense line time and time again. One of the reasons it keeps bottling it.

How to counter the High Defensive Line? Me and my team has been having troubles with an opponent team using this.
With the midfield so crowded it is extremely hard to make a well timed pass.

    • Kenneth

Use a really fast striker, get him to stay a few yards in front of the last man, and have midfielders kick balls into the space behind the defence while the fast striker chase down the pass into space. Usually a one on one of timed properly.

what I do on my team, when we deal with high pressing and defensive line, I tell my defenders to send long balls to the fowards, my tactics are (4df-2dm-2am-2st), so when we are getting suffocated by the opposition, with the long passes we attack the back of the rival defenders...

      Just my opinion:
      1. Do not use wide tactics, since high defense line usually crowd the team on the middle section, their pivot is not the back 4, but DM, if the DM is bad at positioning, as long as you get quick forward, your win is guaranteed
      2. Use 3 front strikers or 4 "strikers" (like Utd under Fergie, if your midfielders are 'lazy' this could've went bad)
2b. 1 striker has to be on the behind of another, since he's the one who basically "baiting" the DM
      4. Your wing players has to be fast and can finish the ball (this is the key), this is why RM was good against this tactics, because Bale and Ronaldo, Salah and Mane are also very good
4b. Your wing should not hold the ball, just finish it if possible
      Again, just my opinion

You forgot to mention the belgian coach Raymond Goethals for his contribution to the high defensive line during his career. That's how Marseille eliminated AC Milan in 1991. Also, the great Liverpool FC from 1979 to 1987 played with a high defensive line when they were in a 4-4-2 formation. In summer 1987, they bought John Barnes and Peter Beardsley for playing in a 4-3-3 formation with great effect but they abandoned the high defensive line for a better use of space led by the oponents.

The offside rule was even regulated in 1995, the year after Capello's Milan destroyed Cruyff's beloved "dream" team. Back when Milan defeated Real Madrid 5-0 in the late 80's (the beginning of Milan's European dominance), Real were caught offside 22 times in that single game!

  • akash saxena

But how do we counter this tactic then?

    • TacTicos
      TacTicos Year ago +1

akash saxena 1. Playing with a good central attacking midfielder, who could play the one-two (pass and walk) with his environmemt.
      2. Make sure you outnumber the opponent last defensive line in the width. So if your opponent plays in a 4-man defense, you play in a 3-5-2 system, wich makes you end up in an end game with 5 vs 4.
      3. Play with fast winger (attackers) in combination with technical midfielders with a good playvision. This combination will make you break through that defense and use the space behind it.
      4. Make the play go through the side and play for example in a system with 2 strikers. This could make the last defensive line of the opponent go crumbled, due to the following and trace work that should be made.
      5. If you got any techincal wingers, make them play or move into the centre of the pitch. And if you got attacking wing backs too make them move up, this could create holes into the sides of the opponent, and makes it a high risk to play with a big space behind them. That will make them give up this tactic during the match.
