In recent weeks the Speaker of the House of Commons (John Bercow) has managed to gain a somewhat cult following. But beyond being an ideal meme, what is the actual role of the speaker? In this video we discuss what the speaker does, their powers and how they are elected.

When Bercow steps down as speaker, does he remain an MP, and if so does he then automatically return to his previous party or is it his or the party's choice?

The British political system is extremely confusing. How any part of it works is just so fascinating. How old is it btw?

How about a video explaining the House of Lords. It's relationship to the House of Commons, it's role in passing legislation, and the extent to which it's members are democratically selected.

I find the British parliament very interesting and entertaining. My interest is in how it works. I still haven't got a firm grasp on it all, which is why I commend your efforts in making informative videos like this one. Thank you. I look forward to seeing more on this subject.

A video on the UK constitution, and lack of a specific written one, would be welcome. Maybe your video should start with defining what a 'constitution' is.

  • Hugo

A written constitution doesn't make things clearer. As Lord Acheson explained in his series of lectures on the difference between the two, in the written constitution there is a transfer of power to the judiciary and the legal profession.

  • Gregory Marthews
    Gregory Marthews Month ago

Having a written constitution can be a step towards a republic where the people are sovereign, a so-called popular sovereignty where the government is guided by the principle of 'by the people for the people' giving a responsibility to public servants such as MP's, police et al the responsibility to not just think of themselves.

The UK has a parliamentary sovereignty where we have what Hailsham described as an Elected Dictatorship, every five years asking the true sovereign to get involved. This provides a fig leaf of legitimacy which up until now has always been one better than most (a fallacy there)

Corbyn has gone on record in the past as to wanting a written constitution and a more normal bill of rights maybe. It could be pointed out that it was the Brits who stopped the EU from taking steps towards this in the past. Imagine the Danish cartoons issue but with a first amendment right to freedom of expression! But no, we like our 'flexibility' to make it up as we go along. We keep all legislation on the books, we have managed to ignore such devices as striking something down as unconstitutional after Middle England and the tabloids have calmed down. We don't have the usual checks and balances that other nations have in general.

Brexit has shown this as a farce. Without a duty to do what's best for the people, the MP's have dithered and tried to avoid leading - which is their job! They are evidently just hoping not to be the one left responsible for the disaster they can rationally see coming. They already asked the true sovereign a simplistic question and are reluctant to ask a clarifying one (deal or remain). Even a two stage one would be better (no deal or deal) then a second (Ans versus remain). Or maybe a border down the Irish Sea! Or just an acknowledgement that our tax havens mechanism for many to avoid legitimate tax might be coming to an end if we stay with the EU. Make a decision, it is your job. That's who you are paid.

Ironically a Parliamentary Sovereign should be able to state that as sovereign it has judged no deal to be a step too far and that some intermediary step must be taken. This deal is a first step the second will happen in two years. So this could be a demonstration as to how this system is so successful.
