Crossrail Opening Delayed (+Q&A)

  • Published on Aug 31, 2018
  • It's Friday 31st of August and Crossrail announced today that the opening of the line has been delayed by several months. I was due to make a Q&A video anyway, so it seemed pertinent to combine the two ...

Geoff really brushed over what is a very poorly managed project to make it sound like a trivial matter based upon an irrelevant past coincidence!

  • Ian Mcclavin
    Ian Mcclavin 3 months ago

I don't think the delay in opening in itself is that abhorrent, after all it is a massive project and issues can and do arise which can put a scheme behind, as you say the same has happened with other projects in the past. What is bad is that they knew it wasn't going to open between Paddington and Abbey Wood in December 2018, and yet they kept up the pretence of saying it would right up until July/August 2018 of saying it would. The legend "from December 2018" remained on the hoardings right up until that date itself passed, in January 2019, and now they've just been covered over.

The 'new' Acton Main Line is starting to come into focus slowly. You can now see the new bridge/where the lifts will be & make a rough guess at the new layout. It's going to see a significant change to the road layout & bus routes too apparently.

Hee Hee! Only two things were predictable before Crossrail started; 1) that it would overrun its projected timescale for completion and 2) it would be WAY over budget. Lo and behold, this has come to pass. Interesting that it is named the Elizabeth Line after the Queen - one failure named after another.

    Dear Geoff,
This morning I heard a very Crossrail (purple Line), Jokes.
A man walks into Hamleys Toy Shop for a Christmas Present.
Goes up to the Floor that had all the Model railway stuff.
    And sees an Empty shelf.
He goes up to the Sales Assistant, as asks why theirs an Empty shelf.
The Sales Assistant replied to the Man.
"Sir, that was where our new Line of Crossrail trains would be displayed, Sir"
The man asks what happened to the Stock.
"Well it's like this Sir, due to delay in it's Scheduled Opening, we he at Hamleys
Have also decided to delay our own displaying of the model's until it opens".
The man looking bemused, say, "So, when will happened?".
The Sales Assistant, sighs and just replies.
"Who can tell, last week it was August Bank Holiday 2019, but then again it might be
In Next Christmas in the Shops".
The man, smiles and picks up a stuffed turkey instead.

Andy, (4:55) It might be like LA as when they built more roads to try relieve congestion, more people ended up buying cars so in turn it got more congested. Maybe it will be like the people who didnt take the central line will hop onto the Elizabeth line, and then more people will use those modes of transport so they both will be as full... Maybe, just maybe...

Brighton residents like me already find the dreaded Thameslink is cheaper and now a bit quicker since they reopened London Bridge. And we will be able to use the Forelocktoucher Line from Farringdon (OK I kind of like Purple Line). A good alternative for getting to anywhere Paddington - Stratford (although it's a tossup with the Jubilee line from LB). And probably Heathrow once they start running through (when will this happen?). Even though it's a longer way round for some journeys.

Crossrail is delayed because the workers have gone to the Spurs ground. They are paying electricians £400 per day which Crossrail can't match.

Just read in a respected rail magazine that whilst the opening has been delayed to allow for extended testing of the signalling equipment on the central part of the Line, that apparently the trains had to be specified to carry 3 different lots of signalling gear because of differing signalling systems in effect on this route. This certainly has to be a recipe for a project to go over budget (which they now confess will happen). It also begs the question as to when NR will be unifying the various network signalling systems currently in different parts of the network. How many different signalling systems are there? What might this cost? Is this feasible? Is this part of their future planning? Video please!

This is starting to sound like East Side Access here in New York, except that ESA is projected to be a decade overdue and is massively over budget

I am sorry, your argument that we should be glad they are checking everything properly makes NO sense. They should be able to plan construction properly, so they can finish everything properly and safely ON TIME.
